Claire Kagenou (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!) » June 2
You know, the more I brainstorm for Shadows Over Earthland, the more I realize how much Cid and Zeref parallel each other.
Take this clip from EIS for example-
You know, if you had found Zeref in his youth, post- family death, pre-curse, you’d probably find him saying something quite similar to this.
Even though their dreams/ goals are very different, I’m sure both of them had plenty of detractors (we explicitly see this in Zeref’s case in the flashbacks focusing on him) that discouraged them from what they wanted to do. So, the idea of doing it alone/ not needing anyone makes sense… at least initially.
Where we diverge is here- Cid wants to live forever (or at least as long as possible) to keep having fun with his dream… whereas Zeref had immortality, albeit with an unimaginably awful side effect after achieving his initial goal, being Natsu’s resurrection.
Initially, even after his curse and the destruction of Mildian, Zeref seems to suggest that his newfound immortality was convenient in the aspect that it allowed him to continue his research to achieve his goal.
But eventually, as we know, Zeref grew tired of unwillingly taking life and longed for death.
This leads into the biggest parallel I see between the two of them, as pointed out by one of my commenters- Zeref’s isolation is born of necessity, while Cid’s is entirely self-imposed.
Zeref longs for human connection while knowing he cannot have it lest he risks another’s life… while Cid cuts himself off due to believing nobody would believe/ support his dream.
The irony for Cid is, quite literally, he is surrounded by people who would sacrifice themselves for him to achieve his dream. He’s just too dense to realize the seven shades aren’t just his successful childhood friends who are humoring him for old times’ sake- they believe in everything he’s doing wholeheartedly, sometimes to extreme degrees (Zeta). I fully believe Shadow Garden would be physically unable to keep Claire out if she ever found out what her brother’s really doing, as well. Probably to a lesser extent, this could apply to Rose, Alexia, Christina, and other characters he’s met and unwillingly befriended/ influenced/ rizzed (lol).
In conclusion, Cid thinks he’s walking the path of isolation while being surrounded by support, so he thinks immortality would be loads of fun.
Meanwhile, Zeref has experienced immortality in total isolation and very much knows it is not at all fun.
I’m looking forward to having the two talk about their varying viewpoints, and seeing how they influence one another 😄
