Makoto was following all the rules and fighting to meet everybody's expectations, as to not feel useless or rock the boat. I'd say her Shadow-Self is very envious of anyone she deems more "free", policing them into her own line of thinking.

 Wanted to animate how I think their shapeshifting looks. Very much inspired by the chameleon dude from She-Ra (I don’t actually watch the show but I’ve seen clips of them)
 I know the shifting animation looks wonky, it’s the first time I’ve ever done something like it
