Background
Living for eternity gets boring after a few hundred millennia. Most Prism Dragons find ways to entertain themselves through pastimes like creating intricate traps to guard their hoards or the manipulation of society overtime. Ethryal was no different. She lived deep in the mountains surrounding a successful trading town that prospered thanks, in no small part, to her influence. Every few hundred years she traveled down the mountain to the town, disguised as a human more beautiful than most have ever had the pleasure to lay eyes on, to have her fun. She took pleasure in finding creative ways to swindle new treasures from drunken travelers to add to her already vast hoard.
Rumors of the dragon’s hoard spread far and wide, attracting many hopeful thieves and treasure hunters, but none have succeeded in making it past the heavily boobytrapped entrance to her lair. The incompetence bored Ethryal to no end, and she wished that someone intelligent enough to make it past the first few sets of traps.
One day, her wish came true.
A pair of world famous treasure hunters found their way to her lair, disarming every trap they stumbled upon with unprecedented ease for mere humans. Ecstatic, Ethryal watched the two make their way through the labyrinth leading to her treasure room. Arriving alive but not unscathed, she revealed her true form to them in a flash of dazzling lights and a boisterous laugh. She thanked them for putting on a good show for her and promised them one treasure each as a reward, provided they could take one without setting off a trap. The hunters, still in awe at the rare sight before them, announced that they wanted a different kind of treasure; her head and hide.
Not even phased, Ethryal challenged them to try their best. The difference in their skill levels were painfully obvious, with the dragon batting both of them away before they could land a single attack. Growing bored of them, she pinned one to the ground with her claw. The hunter’s partner panicked and grabbed a crystalline blade sitting atop a pile of gold, triggering a trap. As the roof began to crumble he took a leap from the pile, driving the blade into her back. She let out a shriek, accidentally crushing the trapped hunter under her claw and swiping at the other as the room collapsed around them.
When Ethryal came to, the surviving hunter and the crystalline blade were both gone, and she found herself in a humanoid form. When she tried to shift, the only change was the amount of scales across her body. She swore loudly, realizing the blade he stole was a cursed relic from ancient times, and it had been used to take her true form from her. Pride severely wounded, she set out to track down the hunter and the key to break the curse.
Miscellaneous Details
- Due to the curse she’s unable to completely hide her scales or turn full dragon. Instead the amount of scales visible change depending on her mood.
- Her scales can still flake off and grow back. She made a cloak out of them and now sells the extra for gold pieces.
- She is the strangest amount of show-offy and secretive when it comes to what her true nature actually is. If it’s because Prism Dragons are not as widely known amongst common folk and are therefore valuable targets, or her nature of disliking undisguised truths is unknown.
- Her favorite pastime is flirting with strangers in pubs. She loves ordering a drink called “Dragon Pussy” for the target of her affections for the night as an ice breaker. It hasn’t failed once.
