"Soulmates are not a thing!" I almost screamed at Isabelle.
"Yes, they are!" She said, though with more laughter.
I sighed, looking at her with a blank stare, "Isabelle, listen closet, soulmates are. Not. A. thing. Okay?"
She gave me the biggest smile possible, "No," I groaned, flinging myself back to slump in my chair. "Back me up here Clary,"
Breakfasts were never calm, all of us being sleep deprived except Jace who always seemed to get enough sleep, but I was going through my cereal. Last night Izzy and I were having a winddown night and doing these things called 'BuzzFeed quizzes' when the argument began.
"I mean it's a cool idea," She shrugged, "Knowing there is one perfect person out there for you. It's sweet," Jace grinned, stretching an arm over her shoulder, "Even if he is the most annoying person on earth," Jace frowned.
Isabelle chuckled, "Has Jace ever told you about soulmates?"
"No," she said, face contorted in confusion.
"Shadowhunters have a different idea of soulmates," She said, and I huffed, "Hush. It's said that Johnathan Shadowhunter saved a mundane girl when he first became a shadowhunter. A few years later there was a demon outbreak and she got stung. There was nothing Johnathan could do so he just held her and gave her what he thought would be there last kiss. Raziel, as a reward for there work, said that if two people truly loved each other, and the angels had made them for each other, then their final kiss can save them. And that's how soulmates were formed,"
"Aw, that's sweet," Clary said.
"Ew, that's dumb," I snorted, "Why wouldn't every shadowhunter kiss their partner on their deathbed? Oh, wait they do, it just doesn't do anything,"
"Just because you love someone doesn't mean they're your soulmate," Isabelle groaned.
"Will you two just shut up?!" Alec snapped, dropping his spoon in his cereal, making a splash, "Damnit," I passed him a napkin, "Thanks. Izzy, you know mum just told you that story to get you to sleep."
"No. it's true. Back me up, Jace?"
"I didn't exactly have someone ready me bedtime stories," he said.
"Ha," I grinned.
Before we could go back to arguing Maryse walked in, "Why are you all lounging about? Their's work to do,"
Ugh, work. Today was dreaded paperwork day. Luckily, we were able to get desks near each other. Isabelle sat at the desk next to me, Alec across from me, Jace next to Alec, and clary had to go practise runes after a mishap on our last mission.
These days were so slow. It sounds bad but I was waiting for someone to run in and yell something about an outbreak or crazy action. Anything to get up from this hellish chair. Isabelle was determined to finish all her paperwork for an early lunch, so she was being boring.
Alec had always been the fastest at paperwork so I could annoy him. I pinged a tiny crushed up piece of paper. He looked up startled, but I went back to my screen. A few moments later another. Then another. Then another. Then "Whose doing that?" Alec said.
I took my headphones out "What?" I asked.
"Nothing," he mumbled, going back to his work. I looked at Isabelle who rolled her eyes then Jace who winked at me. Jace started doing it too.
Jace was too ambitious and shot a full crumpled up post-it notes. "Jace!" Alec turned in his chair, quickly lowering his voice.
As his head was turned, I fired one that went right in his ear, "Score," I couldn't help but laugh, raising my hands in the air in triumph. Jace began to cackle as well and I swear I saw Izzy hide a snigger. I took my headphones off, waiting for the onslaught.
Alec glared at me, "Shouldn't you be doing paperwork?" He snapped. I pressed my lips together, trying not to laugh, "You think your funny? Grow up. You're 19, get your act together,"
"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed," I mumbled.
"Someone wants to actually do their job and take responsibilities for there actions," he raised his voice, "Otherwise it's just going to be dumped on someone else's desk. It's a good thing soulmate aren't real because who wants to be with a child. Grow up," Alec went back to work with a glare etched on his face.
My face fell and I put my headphones back on. Jace rolled his eyes, probably trying to help, but I looked at my screen. Harsh. Isabelle, finally taking a little broke, slid a post-it notes to me. "Don't let it get to you," It read, "he's in a bad mood,"
Alec's bad moods didn't usually bother me. I don't know why I let it bother me. But I did go back to work.
I finished around the same time as Isabelle did for lunch. We sat in the lunch hall, Isabelle across from me, and I was picking at my lunch. "You okay?" she asked, "Alec's in a mood,"
"Yeah but never mind," I sighed. Isabelle gave me a look and I sighed, "Maybe I don't want soulmates to be real because I don't think I have one,"
"Don't say that- "
"But what if it's true? Then what?"
Isabelle sighed, "I don't know. Hell, I don't know if I have one, or if it's a shadowhunter or what it means if they aren't one. Don't let Alec get to you. You'll have at least one lightwood on your side," I smiled a little at her words. Her smile fell, "Speaking of..."
I looked up to see clary, Alec, and Jace walking in. "Look who we found in the library," Jace said, arm over Clary's shoulder. Clary and Jace sat next to Isabelle and Alec plopped down next to me. As he sat down, I stood up, taking my plate to the bins.
After clearing my plate, I walked down past Isabelle, "I'm going to get a head start," she sighed but let me go.
"What's up with (Y/N)?" I heard Alec asked as I walked away. I walked faster.
Paperwork sucks. Isabelle joined me shortly after followed by the other two and clary. "Hey, I was wanting to help clary studying so I was wondering..." he said.
"Send them to me," I said, not looking up from my screen.
"Then they'll never get done," Alec said with a chuckle. He looked at me expectantly, probably expecting a comeback.
I ignored him, "I'm on my last one,"
"Since when did you get fast?" Isabelle said, looking at my screen, not believing me.
Looking straight at Alec, "I grew up," he looked down and I rolled my eyes, "Jace just send them over."
"I owe you,"
"I know,"
I have halfway finished Jace's workload, mindlessly typing and filling in codes, when a red light popped up on my screen. I glanced at Isabelle who was doing the same. "Alec what does it mean when- "Isabelle began to ask.
"We've got a mission," Alec said, getting out his seat.
Isabelle and I followed, quickly gearing up. Jace was there a couple moments later, "Mission?" he said. We all had personal devices that lit up when we had a mission, but they showed on the computer when we were logged on.
The mission was only a few blocks away, so we were there in minutes. "I'll lead," Jace said.
"Shocking," I muttered, and he grinned.
We followed after Jace into a small alleyway. It was down the alley and over a fence in the middle of an industrial estate. Jace led, Isabelle behind him, and Alec at the rear. Jace hopped the fence, then Izzy, as I was halfway up, I heard a gurgling noise than a whooshing noise.
I looked down at Alec to see he had shot an arrow through the chair fence, hitting a green blob looking thing. It hissed and slinked away as more demons began to pour out. Quickly I swung my legs over the fence, dropping down.
Alec was over the fence quickly, but I already had run in. he was long range and stood near the fence, Isabelle had her whip and sword which was kind of a combination, but Jace and I were short range.
We had to the run-up to the demons. There seemed to be a mix of different breeds of them. As I slit the supposed throat of a blue thing, it seemingly mantling away with a hiss, another snakelike thing began to wrap around my leg.
Before I could react, Isabelle's whip wrapped around its head, pulling it back and sending it through the air where it met Alec's arrow. my heart was beating. Hard. My grip on my seraph blade was weakened by sweat so I gripped it tighter, feeling the design of the hilt pressing into my skin.
One latched onto Jace's back. I ran over, pulling it off and raising my seraph blade to slice it. As I did Jace lurched back as another launched at him. He knocked me and I grunted as my back slammed into the concrete.
It's always better to fight on your feet. Once your down though you still have to fight. One slid onto my leg and I sat up, thrusting my blade into it, watching it disappear with a satisfying sizzle. I grinned then I felt something slither around my neck.
It yanked my head back, hitting off the concrete. I was able to look up for a moment to see a demon's tentacle wrapped around my neck, pulling me closer. Dropping my blade, I tried to pull it off.
A sharp pain went through my neck then another sizzle. I scrambled up, seeing an arrow a foot from where my head had been. There was no time to pause.
I felt myself breathing a sigh of realising as Izzy drove her seraph blade into the last demon with a sigh. We were all panting, "Some sicko was keeping them, prisoner," Jace said. "No wonder they were pissed,"
"So," Alec said but I felt my neck getting hot. I was panting more than they were and I raised my hand to my neck where the pain had been, it felt like ice. "Whose doing the paperwork for this one?" The other three laughed but it was muffled as if I was underwater. I blinked more as the colours seemed to blur together for a moment then go back then blur. "(Y/N)?"
"I-I-I think I'm gonna," I landed with a thud. All I could hear was a muffled sound. I could see everything, but I could barely move my fingers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What happened?" Jace said, dropping to his knees beside his friend.
Isabelle began searching (Y/N) for an injury, "I-I don't know. I didn't see them get poisoned or-or-or,"
"Izzy calm down," Jace said.
"My best friend is dying!" She yelled, tears falling from her yes, "Fucking panic Jace!"
"This is getting us nowhere," Alec said, quickly moving beside Izzy, "Jace start checking their legs for something, Izzy their torso," They all snapped to attention, quickly putting (Y/N) onto their back checking for something, anything.
A wound, a bite, a scratch. Whatever did this.
Alec looked over and studied every bit of (Y/N)'s face. He put his fingers through their hair, looking for a gash or something. He glanced down seeing (Y/N)'s eyes following him. He took a breath going back to his search. (Y/N) had to be okay.
"I can't find anything," Jace said.
"Me neither," Isabelle sighed. "What are we going to do?"
"Call Magnus," Alec said, standing up. He tossed Jace his quiver and bow, bending down to pick (Y/N) up.
"Should we move them?" Isabelle asked.
"Can't get much worse," Jace said, phone to his ear, "Magnus we're coming over,"
Alec had never had a bigger reason to run. As he ran, he cradled (Y/N) in his arms. Magnus had come down to let them in and they all rushed upstairs.
"Wouldn't the silent brothers be better?" Isabelle panted.
"I know demons better," Magnus said, leading Alec to lay (Y/N) on the couch, "Besides I can teleport you. Jace pass me that book,"
The biggest problem was knowing the poison. They didn't even know the spot. Alec paced the living room, glancing over. (Y/N)'s eyes were still following him. He froze, looking back at them. His eyes dropped when he saw something.
Alec rushed over, kneeling beside Magnus, "There," He pointed to (Y/N)'s neck.
"A hickey?" Magnus asked, "This isn't the time for jealousy,"
"No, it wasn't there earlier," Alec snapped.
"He's right," Isabelle said, "(Y/N) is single. What do you mean jealous?"
Magnus, Alec, and, Jace all shared a look, "Nothing," Magnus said before going back to work.
"Alec you idiot!" Isabelle stood up flicking her brother's forehead, "(Y/N) likes you! Couldn't you have done this before they were paralysed!?"
"I didn't know this would happen!"
"I found it!" Magus interrupted them. The shadowhunters all tried to look over Magnus' shoulder but Jace felt his stomach churn as Magnus' smile fell. "I-I can't do anything,"
"Then we need to go to the silent city," Isabelle said.
"No." He cut her off, "The poison, the demon. Did you see a purple demon with tentacles?"
"Yeah. One grabbed (Y/N) around the neck," As Izzy spoke, she seemed to realise, "Oh no,"
"It's poison paralysis's the body. Activity speeds it up. Soon every muscle in (Y/N) body will stop. The heart normally is the last but after they stop moving it's normally the breathing system then the eyes,"
"What does that mean?" Isabelle asked, ignoring the mascara down her checks.
"(Y/N) will suffocate to death and we can't do anything about it,"
"No, no, no, no"
Everyone took their moment with (Y/N). Isabelle was a mess. Alec held her as Jace knelt beside (Y/N), then Magnus. Jace walked over and essentially took Isabelle out of Alec's arms. He stood up, shaking legs, and walked over.
Alec knelt beside (Y/N), holding their hand. "I'm so so sorry," he said, "For everything. Magnus says you can't hear us but I'm so so sorry. I-I shouldn't have snapped. Anyone would want to be your soulmate. If only I had had the balls," Alec sniffled, "I love you," Alec began to stand, pressing a kiss to (Y/N)'s forehead. His tears fell onto (Y/N) and he quickly wiped them off. (Y/N)'s eyes were still following him.
Alec cringed as he stood up, "What now?"
"We wait," Magnus said, looking at the floor.
"And what? Let them suffocate to death?" Jace snapped.
Isabelle looked up, taking a deep breath "(Y/N) deserved a better death than that. They don't deserve to feel that,"
Alec nodded, "Magnus? Is there anything?"
"You're asking me to-?" He shook his head with a sigh, "I've lost too many to do it myself,"
"Please. they shouldn't have to suffer,"
Magnus pointed to a door, "That's my storage cupboard. Help yourself,"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sound in my ears was like waves at first but then a beating sound joined it. It was a struggle to move my eyes, but I was trying to figure out what was happening. The sound in my ears began to fade and their voices were becoming clearer.
I looked up as Isabelle stood over me. She made eye contact before turning away and passing something to Alec. Alec held it then held it out for Jace, "I can't," I managed to make out despite it being dull.
Jace took it then slowly moved to kneel beside me. He sighed and I heard him. I felt my toes begin to move
"The throat muscles will stop working any moment," Magnus said, and I heard it clearly.
A tear fell down Jace's face and his hand moved up to pull open my mouth. I saw him raise something up. "I'm sorry," he said. This time it was clear, and I could feel my fingers begin to move. Out of instinct, I tried to close my mouth.
He paused, "Did you see that?" he asked.
"Your imagining things," Magnus said.
I had to try to talk. I had to. All I managed was a low grunt. Jace jumped back, probably dropping something as I heard glass smash then a sizzle.
A sizzle.
Those sizzles.
My eyes darted to the side. I was just able to turn my head slightly, "How are they...?" Magnus said.
Isabelle's eyes went from mine to Alec to mine, "Soulmates," she said, "It's the soulmate thing!"
"That isn't a thing Izzy!" Alec yelled, "Can't you drop that!?"
"Yeah," I managed to breath out before spluttering. Slowly a warm feeling began to travel through my body.
Magnus said it could take a while for me to be able to fully move let alone stand. So far, I could talk, breath, thankfully, and move my arms.
They filled me in on everything, everything. Not knowing if we'd be too weak, Magnus offered to let me crash so he could monitor me. Eventually, they had to go, probably after Clary's 100th call. Isabelle and Jace said their goodbyes then it was just Alec, Magnus and I.
Magnus looked between us "I'm going to put the kettle on. Want tea (Y/N)?" I nodded and waited for him to walk out.
Alec sat down on the coffee table across from me, "So um,"
"Isabelle's crazy, isn't she?" I said, not able to look at him.
"Yeah totally," When I looked up, he looked away. I held in a sigh, "Is it crazy I kind of hope she isn't...?"
"You mean...?"
"I don't care if your childish-not that you are but if you were- "
"You like me,"
"You heard that?" he asked, his head dropping.
"Heard what?"
"When you where-never mind," Alec looked up, gathering some kind of courage, "I'm sorry. For everything,"
"It's okay," I said then we were plunged in silence, "You know if I could stand, I'd kiss you,"
"What- I mean do you- um do I- "
"Kiss me," I cut him off. Alec lurched forward, kissing me. it took a moment for me to be able to move my hand to the back of his neck. After a few moments, he pulled back, "I promise I can kiss better than that normally,"
"I'll be the judge of that,"
"Not in my house you won't!" Magnus yelled, walking in. Alec shot back in shock, forgetting he was on a coffee table and falling off, "Such grace," Magnus muttered, "I brought tea,"

Shadowhunters just don't take enough time to sit down and just breath. Let your hair down, relax a little, and enjoy the peace. With a job that fast-moving and ever-changing sometimes you need to sit down and calm down.
Isabelle said I'd understand when I was older the joys of spending your free time in a club or having a drink, but I doubt it. Alec was all convinced that training could be made fun and the occasional drink in a quiet bar was the best ending to the week. Frankly, I think they're nuts.
Max and I were close, Alec and Isabelle were close, neither pair really understood the other. While max and I enjoyed reading the older two enjoyed activities. My free time is not for hiking nor for drinking. It's for books.
At first, my parents encouraged it seeing I was reading which was learning until my mum actually read one of the blurbs. "What's sci-fi?" then I had to explain.
Sure, they knew I was reading fiction, but they didn't love the mundane fiction I had been picking up from 2nd hand shops and clearance bins. They reluctantly let it go, more concerned with max reading manga, and one of the best presents they got me was a library card to the New York public library. Yeah, I'm that type of sad.
I was easily the quietest lightwood but when people did notice me, I had a novel in hand. Call me weird but it was just too quiet in the institute to read. I need at least a little background noise. The New York library was the same, plus clearly, they didn't appreciate a runed up teenager ruining their 'aesthetic'.
Downworlders cafes were the best option. Partly because the few, but close, friends I had were Downworlders and partly because the food was better. When the chef is a hundred and sixty years old and has been cooking since he was a teenager the foods pretty delicious.
"Usual (Y/N)?" Hayley the cashier asked me. I awkwardly nodded as I fished out my wallet. You know that weird thing where you know someone, and they know you, but you don't actually know each other? All I knew about Haley was that she was a werewolf and normally worked the evening shift on Mondays and Thursdays, the days I come in, for at least the past 3 months. And all she knows about me is I come in at the same time on Mondays and Thursdays and get the exact same thing each time. Honestly, I don't even know how she knows my name.
My work was normally done around dinner time so I would eat dinner at home and come here. My goal was to leave as the sun was setting since it began to get busy with drunks and vampires. I didn't mind vampires, but vampires and drunk werewolves are a headache.
It was easy to get a seat and even easier to jump right back into my novel. This morning, Mid chapter might I add, I was rushed away from the Fahrenheit 451 to a mission and a grumpy Alec.
My eyes swam in a sea of words and stories. I had never really gotten into the mundane classics, but this book seemed to have a grasp on me. When I finally came upon a slight break, even though I was desperate to read, I forced my eyes off the book.
I sat it down with a sigh, the satisfying feeling of reading washing over me as I looked to my food. I had finished my drink through constant sippage but noticed how my bagel was mostly untouched. As I picked up my bagel someone cleared their throat. I looked up and froze in my awkwardness, "Want a refill?"
That wasn't Haley. I nodded, looking at the washed-out skin on the new waitress. She gave me a smile and took my cup to the refill station. I blinked a few times and looked around noticing the new clientele; vampires. I looked outside and inwardly groaned as I saw the sun was all the way down. Damn winter nights!
I smiled as I was handed back my mug, trying not to be awkward and probably failing. I couldn't not have this now. I'd asked for it. I began eating my bagel and sipping on my drink only now noticing the looks I was getting from my runes. Out of instinct, I shrugged my hoodie on.
"Cold?" I almost jumped out of my seat at the voice.
I looked up and it wasn't much better as a guy was standing next to my table, "Just a little," I said after a moment too long. His face was unreadable.
His eyes fell onto my book and a small smile tugged at his lips. "You've got taste," he said, "Can I sit?"
"Um yeah sure," I said, not knowing what to do, "You've read it?"
He hummed a yes, "It gets boring sitting around all day, waiting for night. Thankfully winters here so we'll have more time,"
"Yeah, summer must suck for you," I said, only now realising it literally trapped them inside all day. He nodded but I still wondered, "So um what do you want exactly?" I asked, noticing how many empty seats there were.
"You probably think I'm some weirdo," he said through an awkward laugh, "Most of my well not friends but kind of friends, anyway, most of them don't read so when I saw you with one of my favourite books I don't know I kind of wanted to talk but then you know-" he sighed, looking down ,"and now I'm rambling,"
I couldn't help but grin a little, "Its alright. I'd be the same if someone asked me about harry potter,"
"I've heard about that. Is it any good?"
My mouth almost dropped. "You haven't read harry potter?" he shook his head, "Oh my- right listen because this is some serious stuff right here," queue me rambling on about my favourite book, "And now I'm rambling," I cut myself off.
Raphael grinned, "where are you in your book?" he asked, nodding to the book.
I had never had a friend to gush about over books, not really. tv shows, movies, real people, sure, but never books. We talked about favourite characters, plot points, that one bitch who needs to calm down. Everything.
"And of course, my favourite character- "as I was mid-sentence my face fell.
"Are you okay?" My new friend asked.
"He's gonna kill me," I slunk down in my seat in an attempt to hide.
Alec stormed over "For a shadowhunter, you're crap at hiding," he glared, "And why are you hanging out with Raphael?"
"Whose Raphael?" I asked.
"Me," the boy across from me said with a smile before turning to ' with an eye roll, "Hello shadowhunter,"
"Stay away from (Y/N)." Alec snapped.
"Who?" Raphael said.
"Me," I mimicked him.
Raphael chuckled but Alec scowled "You didn't even know his name? right, that's enough to get up. Now,"
"But maybe (Y/N) doesn't want to," Raphael said.
I sighed, "No I should go," as I stood up, scrambling to pull out a tip. "See you around- "
"Or not," Alec cut me off, stalking away.
'Sorry' I mouthed as I followed Alec. I hadn't even realised I forgot to grab my book off the table.

Alec: The temperature
"Alec, I swear to every imaginable god if you touch that thermostat I will move out," I warn him from the sofa.
"It's freezing," he scoffed, "I'm just gonna put it up a few degrees,"
"Just use a blanket!" I turned around to face him, "you can put layers on, I can only take so many off,"
"I mean I wouldn't be mad if you did,"
Clary: over vs under
Walking into the bathroom, I sighed and walked back out. "You tricked me," I said to clary. Her eyebrows rose, "The toilet paper? It's under. Again,"
She rolled her eyes, "Because that's how it's supposed to be," Clary's eyes returned to the tv.
"No," I said walking closer, "it goes over because it's easier to tear,"
Clary's face screwed up, "That's not a thing,"
"yes, it is!"
"Besides it's not exactly hard to tear away toilet paper," Clary groaned, "Drop it,"
"Never,"
Jace: how to cutlery goes away
"Can you go put the dishwasher on?" I asked Jace. He sighed, groaned, and was generally dramatic as he got up to do it, "thank you!" I called after him.
A few moments passed. "(Y/N)! Can you come here?"
"Ugh!" I groaned, forcing myself up, "this is why I asked you," As I walked in, I saw him standing in front of the dishwasher. "What?"
"The cutlery. You put it in wrong,"
"It's cutlery," I screwed my face up.
Jace rolled his eyes, "The sections are all mixed up, and the knives are face-up,"
"So?"
"So," he sighed, "if you fall when the dishwasher is opened you'' fall on a knife and stab yourself."
"How dumb do you think I am?"
He ignored my comment, "and if you put them in right it's quicker to put them away,"
"Jace," I walked up to him, putting my hands on his shoulders, "it's cutlery. Get over it,"
Magnus: picking where to eat
"I'm starving," I groaned, laying spread across the couch "I need dinner,"
"Do you want to just order something?" Magnus asked from the armchair he'd been stuck in since he got in the house on "I'm not getting up,"
"Sure. What do you want?"
"Whatever,"
I held in a sigh, "Then pick somewhere,"
"You can pick,"
"Fine. I'll phone an Indian's"
"Anything but that," Magnus said. I groaned, "I just don't want curry,"
"You do this every time," I sat up. He looked over, face screwed up, "don't pull that face. Every time we order food, I always end up listing off every option and you always end up settling on the first one. Just pick one,"
"I. don't. care," Magnus spoke slowly, and I was going to scream, "you pick,"
"And I picked Indians,"
"But I don't want one,"
"Exactly!"
"Fine!" Magnus rolled his eyes, "Chinese,"
"eh, we had that last time," I said. Magnus groaned, "don't you start with me,"
Simon: chewing loudly
Today had been perfect. Simon and I both had the day off, we had no other chores to do, and for once we weren't tight for money. For dinner, we opened a bottle of wine and started making it ourselves.
We sat down to eat, and I felt at peace. We started talking and eating but the sound of Simons chewing was getting to me. "You okay?" he asked before going right back to grinding on his food. How can pasta be so loud?
"It's nothing," I smiled, not wanting to ruin it.
"You can tell me,"
I held in a sigh, "you're kinda chewing loudly,"
Simon chuckled, "Sorry,"
we continued with our conversation. But it was getting worse. Eventually, I snapped, "Can you chew any louder?!"
Simon looked at me for a couple seconds before taking open mouth, loud, dramatic bites, "loud enough?"
"Now you're just being petty,"
"You're complaining that I am chewing loudly?"
"You are! It sounds like a construction site in there!"
Izzy: using the fancy towels
I washed my face, ready for bed, and as I was drying it Izzy walked in," Ready?" she asked before her face dropped, "Why are you using they towels?"
"My face is wet,"
"But there the good towels,"
"Which is why I'm using them?" I said but it sounded like a question.
"But there for guests,"
I stared at her for a couple seconds, "I paid for them, I'm using them,"
"What if my mum comes over?"
"She can use them too?"
"But there all crumpled!" Izzy groaned.
"There just towels!"
Raphael: toothpaste
Call me strange but when I'm brushing my teeth I don't normally focus on the toothpaste. Raphael apparently does when he walks into the living room, toothpaste in hand, "Do you see the problem?" he asked.
"You're missing the toothbrush?" I rolled my eyes.
"You're supposed to squeeze from the bottom,"
"Raph, I love you, I'm not fighting over toothpaste,"
"We aren't fighting," He rolled his eyes.
I looked at him, eyes wide, "Really? cause if you use that tone with me, especially over toothpaste, were going to be fighting"
"Look I need to take care of my teeth. It's just a simple favour,"
"You're a vampire. If you can't squeeze toothpaste, then we've got bigger things to worry about."
Raphael rolled his eyes before heading back to the bathroom, saying, "Just squeeze from the bottom,"
"Never!"
Jem: closing cupboards
"Can you get the plates out?" I asked as I took the pasta off the hob.
"Sure thing," Jem said, grabbing the plates but leaving the cupboard open.
I held back a scream as I loaded the plates up. When he went to grab his I stopped him. "Cupboards?" I said.
Jem rolled his eyes, "You're just going to have to open them again"
"Is it so difficult to shut the cupboards?"
"What's the big deal?" he asked.
"This morning? You didn't shut the dresser drawer and look," I pulled up my t-shirt to show the bruise on my hip "Now I've got this,"
"Then look was you're going,"
"I shouldn't have too!" My mouth almost gaped. "Just shut the damn cupboards,"
"Only if you shut your mouth," he muttered under his breath.
"What was that?"
"Nothing," Jem scrambled to shut the cupboards. I just rolled my eyes and grabbed my pasta.
Will: putting shoes away
Not again. The smile dropped from my face as I saw his work boots sitting by our door. Gabriel gave me a light smile, "have fun," he patted my shoulder, bending down and picking the boots up for me.
I took them and walked into my room. Will was laying on the bed, book in hand. "Hey babe," he smiled as he looked up from his book, "Are they my boots?"
"Yeah,"
"Why do you have my boots?"
"Why were they in the hallway?"
Will sighed, putting his book down, "We've talked about this. I'm just going to put them on tomorrow morning,"
"That doesn't mean you can just leave your things lying about. You'll lose them"
"Who's going to steal my boots?"
"Charles is turning 3 soon. You never know where he might put them,"
Will rolled his eyes and took the boots from my hands. He opened our door and placed them back down, shutting the door. "It'll be fine. You should be glad I stopped leaving them in the room," I gave him a big fat fake smile. He'll regret that.
The next morning, he bursts into the dining hall during breakfast, "Where are my boots?" Will deadpans.
Will looks at Charles. Charlotte went red, "You are not blaming my toddler for you losing your boots,"
"I didn't lose them! He took them,"
I fake coughed, "William. You might wanna check outside." Will glared at me before rushing out. Charlotte looked at me with the most confused look, "If he's going to leave them outside our room, I'm going to leave them outside,"
"But it was raining last night?" Henry said.
A smile crept onto my face, "I know,"

That mission. So glad it's over. I'd been a shadowhunter for years, I'd faced Mortimer, but that mission. Something about it shook me. Charlotte, Henry, Tessa, Jem, Will, and I all sat in the library with the fire going.
My brain replayed the moments on a loop. When Jem got knocked down when another demon grabbed Tessa's neck, the one that went for Charlottes' stomach when Henry hit the ground with a crunch when Will. Ugh, that was the worst one. Wills cry when the demon got him. It was taken care of with a stele but the sound of his voice.
I was curled up into Wills' side on one of the armchairs, the others dotted on the sofas and armchairs. All silent. "I'm glad everyone's okay," Charlotte broke the silence, "we never could've known the extent of that. We all made it out alive. You should be proud,"
An awkward silence fell across the room, Charlotte giving an awkward smile before her head dropped, "Charlottes right," Will said. "We're shadowhunters, it's what we do. Does anyone have a pack of cards," he sat forward a bit, clapping his hands, "This is awfully boring,"
The room livened a little and as they began to set up, I stood from Wills' lap, "Count me out. I'm just gonna head to bed,"
Everyone nodded except Will who caught my wrist "You sure?" he asked, looking me in the eyes.
"Yeah. Don't worry, I'm not gonna fall out the bed or anything," I joked.
Will rolled his eyes, "Night darling," he said, leaning up. This time I rolled my eyes as I leant down to meet him halfway and kiss him.
I smiled, pulling back, "Night Will," I ruffled his hair and he pouted. "Night everyone," I said, walking away.
The room was cold when I walked in. I hadn't been here since just before breakfast and it was soon approaching 9 at night. Not late but a long day. I got ready and slipped into bed, shivering from the cold sheets, then put the light out.
It was dark. I'm not afraid of the dark, I'm afraid of what's in it. My mind replayed it all over again. Charlotte, Henry, Tessa, Jem, Will, Charlotte, Henry, Tessa, Jem, Will, Charlotte, Henry, Tes- what was that noise?
It must've been a branch hitting the window or something. Then again. What if it's the demons? I'm being paranoid. But what if? Don't be stupid, you're in the institute, your safe. But what if that's what they want you to think?
Fears danced across my mind as my breathing quickened with every sound. Then the door opened.
Rolling over, I grabbed my stele, knowing it was using but trying anyway. "Back off" I barked.
The light flickered on, "Why are you still up?" Will asked, "and are you threatening me with a stele?"
I looked at him, "No," I said, tossing it aside. "Night," I said as I quickly rolled over, looking away from him.
Will sighed and I heard his feet pad against the carpet. "Are you okay?"
"I can't sleep," I whispered, "I kept imagining- "I took a breath, "and I know I shouldn't, and I know what we're training to do but- "
"It's okay, it's okay," Will said, rubbing my shoulder, "I'm here. Give me a minute yeah? Nothing Will happen to you when I'm here,"
I nodded but didn't look up. This time it was the sound of Will getting undressed and ready for bed I heard. "I'm going to put the light out," Will warned. I nodded then darkness. Hearing Wills feet cross the floor still freaked me out. Will slid into the bed and I shivered, "Hey, it's just me," Will said, "Come here,"
Rolling over quickly, I buried my head into Wills' chest. "I hate this job," I murmured.
"Hey, it's okay," Will whispered, stroking my hair, "I'm here. Mind what I said? Nothing Will happen when I'm here. I promise,"

Magnus X Platonic reader —- Mentions of Malec
“For the record, this will be incredibly boring,” Magnus warned me as we walked up the steps to the institute.
“Duly noted,” I say but my eyes are too busy wandering the place to care. It's just some old cathedral. That doesn’t mean Magnus turned down his outfit. If anything it’s turned up to annoy the shadowhunters. A shiny blue shirt with only a few buttons done up, white ripped jeans, and covered in jewels isn’t really a business look. Unless your Magnus.
Since I’ve been living in my original outfit, PE kit, and one of Magnus shirts for the past few days I don’t look as put together like him. Just some black leggings and a white shirt that one of Magnus’s ‘friends’ had left. Luckily it’s not stained and my size. “Well if your taking notes remind me to get your clothes. Not that I don’t appreciate a…simplistic look, but I know you can look even more…fabulous?” he tried.
I shook my head “I look a mess. Don’t lie.”
“You said it not me,” Magnus said before stopping, “Just wait. They come to us,” I nodded and double checked the bag Magnus gave me “Don’t talk unless you need to, stick by my side, and don’t touch anything with runes on it.”
“Cool,” I said. The bag he gave me was black, not helping my ‘simplistic’ look, and had a notebook, pen, and a bottle of water in it. Well and glitter. “Can’t you use magic to take notes,”
“Probably,” he shrugged.
Before he could reply some people dressed in all black walked out of the cathedral. “Who is this?” They asked.
“Hello to you too,” Magnus rolled his eyes. They glared in response, “This is my assistant,”
“No one said you could bring an assistant,” The woman crossed her arms, her eyes scanning over me.
“No one said I couldn’t,” he countered. “And I do believe you asked for my help since you were incapable of doing it yourself,”
“I wouldn’t say incapable,” she scoffed. I really get a bad feeling off her.
Magnus smiled “Well in that case my services aren’t needed,” He turned to walk away.
“I suppose we need your help,” she forced out. “We will let this assistant business slide for once. Follow me,”
The lady led us in the cathedral. I hid my shock as we discovered the cathedral wasn’t run down but in fact filled with tech and antiques. I mouth damn to Magnus who just winked at me.
Honestly, I have no clue what's being said. I’m not even going to try to make sense of it. Luckily schools the same so I still know how to take notes.
I flick to the next page of the notebook to start writing about some demon thing I can’t even spell when I hear an annoyed sigh “Does she really need to take all this down?” An older man asked, cutting Magnus off mid-sentence.
Magnus glared “My assistant is just doing her job. Like I and everyone else in this room is trying to do.”
The shadowhunter scoffed “Well I believe you're very familiar with the demon so why doesn’t she go get coffee while we talk about him, ”Magnus' eyes flickered to me, we shared a nervous look, “What type of assistant can’t make coffee?”
Magnus turned to the man, Alric I think, “It’s the fact you are telling my assistant what to do. If you wanted coffee all you had to do is ask. Would you mind?” Magnus turned to me.
“I don’t know where the kitchen is,” I whispered.
“Up the corridor to the left, 5th door on the right,” I jump when Maryse speaks. “And get me one too,”
Damn runes. I curse in my head. “Anyone else?” I ask without thinking. I’m used to be kicked around anyway. Whenever I got their coffee wrong before they’d spill it down my legs. I need to see if Magnus magic could heal it one day.
Turns out the notebook was more useful to write down the coffee orders. Magnus gives me a supportI’ve to look before I leave the room.
When I walk into the kitchen I freeze. Theirs already 4 teens in there. “(Y/N)?” Alec says, snapping me from my fear.
“Uh yeah,” I mutter, not knowing what to do.
“Is Magnus here?” I nod weakly. “Okay. What are you doing here?”
“I’ve to get coffee,” I don’t like new people, especially when it’s 4 strangers with the capability to kill me or lock me in the silent city. Whatever that is.
He nods and moves, revealing the coffee maker. I walk over and look around for everything. Alec opens a cupboard revealing the mugs. “Thanks,” I mutter.
I can feel everyone's eyes on me as I grab the mugs. “Who are you?” One of the girls asks. I glance at her to see it’s the one that looks like Alec. His sister I assume.
“Magnus assistant,” I try to cut the conversation short.
The girl shrugs and the rest of them return to there conversation. “Do I know you?” I freeze yet again.
I turn to see it was the other girl, a short ginger wearing an oddly colorful top, who spoke. I shrugged in response.
As I loaded the cups onto a tray I could feel her gaze on me “Hey, you went to my school! You’re that kid who always sat alone…” she trailed off when she realized.
“Yeah well. Yeah,” I don’t know how to respond! “Nice to see you I guess,” I pick up the tray and go to leave. Alec opened the door for me and I nodded as a thank you.
“Wait, if you went to her school, that means you’re a mundane?” The blonde said.
All 4 looked at me, I looked at them, “Um not exactly…gotta go,” I rushed out the kitchen.
I rushed back into the room and the shadowhunters looked at me for a second before ignoring my presence again. Handing out the coffee’s, I returned to my notes, visibly shaken. Only Magnus seemed to notice.
The meeting dragged but eventually we were free to go. Magnus said he’d do something or make some potion. I dunno since I was zoning out and thinking about school again. God, I hope I never have to go back.
Magnus let us stop at a café to grab lunch. “Order anything you like,” he told me as he notices my eyes scan the prices first.
Still, I chose the cheapest thing on the menu. Magnus looked discouraged but said nothing. As we ate he asked “Did something happen at the institute? I’m surprised you didn’t spill coffee on anyone.”
I shrugged and looked down, “Nah. Just bumped into some rude shadow hunter,”
“They're not the kindest breed,” he hummed, “Hot but mean,” he shook his head and took another drink of his, for once, non-alcoholic drink, “So when are we going to see your foster family?”
Swallowing my drink hard, I glared at the table “Family is a strong word. And I’d hoped never,”
“What about your clothes? School stuff? Stuff stuff? Surely there something you want back?”
I sighed and began playing with my food. “Dunno,” I shrugged. “I’m normally packed pretty light. Plus I’d be surprised if they didn’t chuck it already,”
“We’re going,” My head snapped up in protest, “No ifs and or buts. You’re going to get your stuff and I’m going to check out my competition. I’m sure I’m a much better non-family roommate,”
“Magnus, you’re the closest thing to family I’ve had since my parents,” I confessed.
He frowned slightly, “Darling you’ve known me maybe a week,”
I shrugged “Didn’t say I was a happy story did I,”
Unfortunately, unlike everyone else in my life, he kept to his word. I couldn’t even bring myself to knock on the door. Magnus sighed and did it himself. He was some sort of magic to cloak him from mundanes apparently. Honestly, I don’t know anymore.
The door opened and the plain look on my foster mother's face was replaced with disgust, “You’re back,”
“I just want my stuff,” I mumbled, looking at the ground.
“Look at me when you speak,” she snapped. I snapped back into her mold, shoulders back, straight posture, no personality or emotion to be seen, “Better but still awful. You have 5 minutes then I’m calling the police. And don’t even think about touching anything,” She stormed away.
I let out a breath of relief before taking a step into the house. It wasn’t an unhappy looking house with a creepy atmosphere and children's bones. The most disturbing part was it looked like a normal suburban house.
Magnus followed behind me as I darted up the left side of the stairs, sticking to their instructions. When I got to the top hall I grabbed the stool and reached up to open the attic. Magnus looked confused as he saw me bring the ladders down.
“I thought that was your room?” he pointed to the white painted door with a cheap amusement park photo with me and my foster parents on it. All 3 of us had smiles on our faces.
Not turning to look at him, I said “So does my social worker,” before beginning my climb into my room. If you can call it that.
Boxes filled the attic. They were filled with all your usual stuff, old photo albums, junk you forgot about, their biological kid's stuff. My small corner with a mattress and old chest of drawers fell into the junk you forgot category.
Magnus scrunched his nose up when he saw my corner/bedroom. “It’s not much,” I said “But it’s a step above Harry’s cupboard,” I tried to joke.
“Is it?”
I sighed but got to work. The chest of drawers was an old piece of furniture they let me use. Inside was my other 2 pairs of jeans, 4 tops, underwear for a week, and a few other things. Magnus summoned a plastic bag for my stuff. The clothes took a bag up.
The next bag was a little more personal. A couple books, a small nail polish set I got when I first moved in, a cd I got as an apology from my last family after they kicked me out, a few old notebooks/diaries/sketchbooks I had acquired.
The last bag was barely half full as I put my spare trainers and an old teddy I’d managed to hang onto in it. I held the old bear in my hand. The once light pink bear was now a dull grey, it’s button eyes had been reattached a few times, and there was a bit of muck on it. “I know it looks like junk,” I told Magnus “But Misty’s been with me since, that night,”
He nodded as I put her in the bag. “Is that everything?”
“Mostly,” I shrug “Everything else was in my school bag. There is one thing though,” I said. Quickly I moved the bags off the mattress and lifted it up. I fished around under the bed till my hand clasped around a small, cold, metal object.
I pulled it out and went to stuff it in my pocket to hide it, “What is that?” Magnus asked.
“Something more personal than Misty,” he nodded, not pressing any further, “We should go. We've almost been here 5 minutes,”
“You really are terrified of them,” he whispered.
I didn’t look at him but nodded as I grabbed the bags and rushed to the ladders. As I began the descent down the ladders I noticed the ground get closer till “Ow!” I whined as I hit the floor with a thud.
“Did you think I was kidding when I said 5 minutes?” She crouched in front of me.
“No ma’am,” I rushed to my feet. She slapped me “No ma’am,” I spoke up. “Sorry, ma’am.”
“You realize how lucky you are?” She yelled “You ungrateful brat! People like you wish-“
“That’s enough,” Magnus jumped down from the attic with the elegance that only a cat could have “Do you realize how lucky you are that I don’t bitch slap you into next week?”
“Excuse you! Who are you?”
“Her social worker,” He smirked. I cocked an eyebrow but held back a laugh as her face drained of color. Kinda like how she drains my soul, “Exactly. How do you think the police will feel?”
“I’m sure we can come to some sort of arrangement?” she purred, leaning onto Magnus.
He looked beyond disgusted, “I think I just vomited in my mouth,”
She recoiled “You're not exactly a ten either! With your chink eyes and gay face!”
Magnus recoiled, eyes filled with fury. Without thinking about it I lunged at her. We began wrestling on the ground, Magnus moving to block the stairs so we didn’t, you know, die. Eventually, I managed to get on top of her, pinning her down.
Her makeup was smudged, she was panting, a bruise was already forming on her forehead and nose, and she just looked pathetic. “Wait till the police get here,” she panted.
I couldn’t help but let out a half-hearted laugh “Wow. What is it you always said to me? Oh yeah, the door hit you, didn’t it?” I got off of her but she only scrambled away from me, “Fuck you Debbie,” Was all I said before grabbing my bags and walking down the stairs. She just looked at me but said nothing.
Magnus and I left the house silently and began walking down the street “I’m so sorry for her behavior,” I told him.
“It’s not your fault,” He shook his head, “I’m used to it by now. I was alI’ve when it was a lot worse,”
“That doesn’t mean it’s okay,” His head hung low, “And it is my fault. It’s my fault I didn’t hit her harder,”
He laughed a little “I just wish I could get revenge without breaking any accords,”
I froze at his words, “Can I borrow your phone?”
“Wha-“
“Give!” I told him. He fished it out his pockets and I handed him my bags. I punched in 911 and told them “103, crescent drive, Belhaven, Brooklyn. The cupboard under the stairs in a green bag labeled 2013, under the photo album. You might wanna get their quick. Her husbands got a temper and an unlicensed gun and I’m pretty sure she’s trying to flee that house soon,”
Before the dispatcher spoke I hung up, handing Magnus back the phone. “What in the hell did you do? What in the hell did they do?” he asked as I started walking again.
I looked at him “They exploited the foster system, they're not exactly stand up people. Besides, how do you think two low paying corporate people pay bills. It’s not fake snow in the bags,”
Magnus, somewhat understandable concerned, demanded I tell him everything. That night I did. He didn’t even have time to start his work for the shadowhunters. Instead, he listened as I told him about all 9 different foster families and 3 different homes id been in.
I told him about my main abusers and skimmed over the normal ones. He found out everything and said he did have a potion to heal my scars.
He also asked about the thing under the bed. I took it out of my back pocket with a sigh “It’s a locket.” I turned it over in my hand, looking at the swirls imprinted on the golden heart locket, “When my parents died I was immediately put in the system. I only was allowed to pack one bag. Misty, a few pairs of clothes, a couple other toys that got stolen. This had been on my parent's dresser. They said I couldn’t take anything that wasn’t mine but I grabbed it when they weren’t looking.” I held it up by its chain and let it drop into my hand “It’s all I have left of them. Unless you count Misty.”
Instead of hiding it or shoving it in a pocket like I normally do I handed it to Magnus. He looked at me, asking permission to open it and inspect it further. I nodded.
He easily opened the locket and looked at the tiny photos. A small black and white photo of my mum and dad on one side, on the other, was some family photo with people I didn’t recognize. A lock of black hair was in the locket as well.
Magnus face contorted. He closed the locket and flipped it over, looking at the design. “What did you say your last name was?”
“(Y/L/N),” I said, brows scrunched together “Why?”
He shook his head “Then why does your families locket have an L on it?” He opened the locket again and summoned an object with magic. “An enchanted monocle,” he told me as he held the glass to his eye. “Well looks like we don’t need those potions anymore,” he looked up at me and said “You’re a lightwood,”
