4. “You probably don’t want to watch this.”
Jay had one hand resting on the back of the couch while he leaned on it, his other hand hovering close to his face so that he could bite the nail of his thumb. Anxiety had been surging through him for the last twenty four hours, with no relief, no chance to stop and breathe, and he hadn't slept a wink all night. Even being in a place with plenty of people around, with both of his partners in bed with him, there hadn't been anything that made it possible for him to settle.
Turning on the news as soon as there was coffee probably wasn't the best idea they'd ever had, but there wasn't much else to do with their morning. And there was something oddly soothing about having the same information fed to them over and over again, a comfort in knowing what was coming each time. If they knew it was coming, it wouldn't be such a shock, wouldn't be so jarring and disturbing and sudden. If they knew it was coming, it could be like any other story on the news, not some unwelcome blast from their past.
He didn't look away from the screen or the scene there, the house with yellow police tape and too many official cars around it to count. It was probably the same number as the bodies inside - mostly irrelevant, but too many. The details of the particular case had been shared during a debrief the morning before, things that hadn't been shared with the general public. The mask that had been found at the scene, the pictured taken of each wound, the evidence that lined up with the same method of attack from fifteen years before...
It couldn't be the same people. One of them was dead and the other was locked away forever. But the similarities were there, and it had put all three survivors of that first attack into such a state that sleeping at home was impossible.
That fact had led to using the bags they kept in Jay's truck, two days' worth of clothes and medication, and curling up together in a not entirely unfamiliar spare bedroom. Sleeping still hadn't been on the agenda, at least not for Jay and Mouse, but that didn't really matter. They felt safer in Hank's house than in their own apartment, if history really was coming back to haunt them, or even if it wasn't. A certain level of trust had developed, over the years, with all three people who had pulled them out of that bloody house. And that bond had only gotten stronger when they all worked together on a daily basis.
Jay still didn't look up from the television when he heard footsteps on the wooden floors. He didn't even blink when a figure moved into his space, leaning over the back of the couch to grab the remote from the cushion that Mouse had set it on. The morning was barely starting, but they'd been in their positions for half an hour. Mouse had perched on the very edge of the couch, practically minimizing the space between himself and the news story, while Jay was stood behind him, his thumb still in a barely safe position in front of his teeth. There was a comfort in knowing the details of the attack that was being reported on, but that didn't make their anxiety disappear.
"You probably don't want to watch this..."
Hank shook his head while he switched the channel. It went from the news to some early morning cooking program, violent attack from a masked killer to some conventionally attractive television personality talking about eggs. Maybe the friendlier face should have calmed them down, but Jay could feel his back getting even more tense while he stood up straight.
"That's what you both wore yesterday. Go change, and I'll worry about breakfast. I think the team will understand if we get in a little late today. And... Mouse, put the coffee down."
The only real response he got was a dismissive hand wave and an audible sip, and neither of them expected more. If this was anything like last time, they would be lucky if they heard another word from Mouse for the rest of the week. But that was fine, as long as he was alive and safe, no matter how the rest of this case played out. For all they knew, it really was just a coincidence, and they would wrap it up in a few days just like every other case they took on, and it would be over again as quickly as it started. That was the best they could hope for.
"I gave him decaf." Shaking his own head, Jay sighed and stepped back from the couch. He had to consciously pull his thumb away from his mouth, checking to make sure his anxious nibbling didn't break skin. "We'll change, and I'll wake up Hailey. We can be ready to go in an hour. Thanks for letting us stay last night."
"Don't thank me just yet. We have to catch the guy who did this."

Hi Becca
Long Time!
New Phone, New Tumblr. Don't worry, the old phone is still logged into the old account.
I forgot my password, and needed a step away from ACOTAR as well.
But I'm here still. Had to follow you again, which I am going to do right as my ask here is sent.
You CAN answer this publicly, but as I am making this to keep away from ACOTAR or anything SJM really, I hope the readers are understanding. So keep the SJM topics at the other account.

SHAE MY LOVE!!!
How I have missed you!
I hope everything okay! How are you??
I completely understand pulling away from Acotar. I pulled away too. There's just so much drama and it's so toxic that for my mental health I needed too. Its stressful and not fun anymore. And Fandom should be fun
I'll take the books for what they are but that's it. I'm not going deep in that Fandom anymore. The only thing I really add to it is reblogs on my bookblr (@penallaphedaneer) and doing beta work for Gigi. All the plots i have in docs im either going to give away or see if can make it Stranger Things.
But anyway, enough about all that. I'm so happy you're back love! I'm gonna follow you as soon as I send this ❤️
