A New Addition || Shale and Dean
What started off as a regular night soon turned to bloodshed. First the vampire attacked my step mother, her blood splattering over my skin. I was huddled in the corner as the vampire advanced when the man came. It was over quickly, another large splatter of blood raining down on my skin. When I chanced a look, the man was frowning, watching me. I wasn't frightened, even when he picked me up and took me to our bathroom, getting me in a bath. I was trembling, and I was sure I was crying, though he managed to soothe my fears and soon enough I was in new clothes, asleep on the couch. Days later after the man, John, found me we left my house. He couldn't find any relatives listed, and I told him she never registered me. I was the unmentionable. He took me away though, took me to an older home with two boys, one my she and the other younger. I stayed behind John though, watching them nervously.
So my Dean roleplayer wrote me a fanfic...
And it was amazing. I posted it a while back, but I had some free time today, so I wrote Shale's view. Here is 4000 words of which most is pain or fluff.
Shale met Dean when she was six years old. Dean seemed to be a few months older than she was, but she didn’t notice, nor really care. Well, she did, but there were more important things to focus on, like Dean himself and the man who had taken her with him. Shale was hiding behind the man, John, and peeking from behind his legs. She seemed nervous and scared, with a small cut and bruise on her temple.
You see, Shale didn’t live a normal kids life. Her stepmother had beaten her, mentally, physically and emotionally. She didn’t even know what a regular life was. And on top of all this, her life had managed to become even weirder when her mother invited a strange man into the house. She had watched him slaughter her, teeth turning to fangs and eyes darkening with what she would later call bloodlust. He was just turning on her, where she was huddled in the corner, when John burst into the room and swiftly chopped the things head off.
He turned to her, assessing her before carefully picking her up and holding her in his arms, rubbing her back to calm her down so she wouldn’t continue crying. John had to think of what to do with this child, with Shale. Three days later and John still hadn’t found a relative, but he had coaxed Shale’s story out of her which made up his mind to take her with him.
Through these few events, Shale’s life was changed. She gained a father figure, despite him not being around often, and two brothers. Or as she called them when she first started talking, her heros. She didn’t use the word sibling, even when she grew up, unless on a hunt. Siblings were family, and with her experiences, she didn’t have family. Family was cruel and hurt her, but these people didn’t lay a finger on her, not with hate in their eyes. Instead, with something akin to love.
The first night, when John brought her forward and told Dean to get her some food and a room to sleep in, she just stood there, stock still with wide eyes. It broke slightly when Sammy, the younger boy of two, came forward and took her hand, leading her to the kitchen. She was confused by the action and looked back to John, but he wasn’t looking at them anymore. From then on, she learned to rely on both Dean and Sam. That was also when she started to learn the real meaning of family.
It was hard to get used to this new life, where they moved around so much and John was gone for so long. It scared her at first, and after the first move, she refused to come out from under her covers, wanting to stay protected beneath her covers. It didn’t last long though, since she had been taught to not fear anything and her instincts finally kicked in after so much shock and change. She practically became a new person, playing with Sammy but always watching Dean from afar. He was older, more complex, and it took her longer to get used to him.
When she finally managed to get up the guts to sit beside Dean, to ask him questions, always looking at the ground and acting shy, it wasn’t long before she grew comfortable. And along with that, more happy.
In a few short weeks, she was running around and playing tag with her new family, laughing and finally realizing what it meant to be happy. To have someone to rely on and to be safe. Slowly, the marks from her old life faded to pale scars, though they never disappeared. That would be a reminder she always had with her.
She could see the questions in Deans eyes as she grew, but she never answered them. Even when they had to change together in the confines of the car after a hunt and he saw the huge ex across her back between her shoulder blades, she never told him what they meant. She was intent on burying her past, and so far, she had managed it.
She remembered how Dean helped her learn how to shoot a gun and use a knife, laughing when she managed to do something right, and the steely determination she had when she kept practicing. It was the traits of a Winchester, through and through. She was one of them by the time she turned eight years old and had her second real birthday.
As they all grew older, moving through the levels of school with difficulty thanks to the moving, and not to mention the hormone changes, they still managed to keep close. She knew things were changing though, that something was starting to shift and change. Deans looks were becoming longer when she did something particularly funny or cute, always laughing or blushing and shooting him one of her shy looks. She had never lost that one little look, though she never knew what it did to him. She was oblivious to the lingering touches and the looks. She just continued on as she always had, never taking an interest in anyone, though she helped Sammy out when he had a crush, or went on his first date, and even danced around the room with him on his grade eight prom that he missed. All these things, yet she never took a notice in men or women herself.
Unbeknowst to anyone other than her though, she had noticed men. One in particular though, the one that always watched over her and kept her safe. She was sure he didn’t want her though, what with the women he was always with himself. She was simply his sibling in her mind, and it wouldn’t change. She made her peace with that early on.
Of course, all those thoughts were put on hold when the changes started. She complained to Dean about how she thought her hair was going gray with the stress of hunting already but he just laughed her off. That wouldn’t happen, he was sure of it. She went to sleep, and in the morning woke the entire house with a scream. “Dean!!!”
He rushed into her room, staring with shock at Shale and her now stark white hair. She turned to him, shaking her head. “I don’t know what happened…” Nobody did.
This was just the start of the changes though, changes which had everyone put on edge, Dean included. First the hair, then her skin. She had always been pale, one of those girls that just couldn’t tan no matter how she tried, but now she was practically luminescent. She looked off in the dark, as if she was so white she almost glowed.
Next was her eyes. It started slowly, just a little bit of silver around the edges, giving her eyes that other girls were envious over. By the time they had changed, it felt like she had just blinked and they were silver. Pure silver, like molten metal. Despite her insecurity, she still allowed Dean to accompany her to graduation that year, as well as prom.
She could tell it scared him though, the changes. She saw the nervousness in his eyes, and how he always dodged all the questions she tried to bring up, or the statements about how unnatural her changes were. In turn, this scared her. How could Dean be nervous? He had always been the rock in her life, but now he had been swept up with her in the confusion.
The last change happened fast, almost faster than the hair. She woke up and went about the normal routine, checking the salt lines and the devils trap. The usual. Her back muscles kept twitching though, and it was annoying her. She couldn’t keep from fidgeting, rolling her shoulders now and then with her irritation. She wondered if maybe she got an infection from the last creature they hunted, but that couldn’t be it. She hadn’t gotten bit or scratched in any way.
Dean suggested later on that they go for a walk, get some fresh air, and she agreed. Maybe that was all she needed, after having been cooped up for so long. She felt cramped for some reason, being in the small living room.
That irritation just grew though as they walked, entering a park as the irritation started to shift into actual pain. She started scratching, like you might do if you had chicken pox, or a mosquito bite. By the time Dean stopped her and grabbed her hands though, fear and worry in his eyes, she had practically been scratching her own back raw.
Her legs gave out from the pain and she dragged Dean down with her, hands fisted in his jacket as she let out a little sob of pain. It was excruciating. It felt like her back was on fire, as if someone was raking an invisible rod of hot metal down her back.
“De, I-I don’t know what’s happening!” She finally gasped out, teeth clenched against the pain which threatened to make her black out. “My back, my back is on fire… It hurts, god it hurts De!”
The pain finally became too much and she collapsed forward into his arms, the pain hitting its peak. As soon as the pain hit its peak though it disappeared in one flash, leaving her panting and slowly coming to. Dean was shocked still, looking at the large navy and white wings sprawled over the bloodied snow. The wings which had just ripped through her back and shirt, only the collar and waist holding it on her and keeping her from being partially nude.
Shale let out a happy little sigh when she felt Deans hand brush over the joint of her wing though, a few little sparks of mild pleasure racing into her nerves. Leaning into him more, she brought her hands up to grasp his arms, pulling herself slowly into a sitting position, forehead resting on his shoulder as she pants. She didn’t have much energy after whatever had just happened.
When she had enough energy however, she looked back over her shoulder and gave a little sigh. She tried lifting a wing, watching as it responded to her efforts and lifted a bit before dropping back to the snow. “I… I understand now I think…” She finally said, eyes downcast and sad.
“What do you understand, Shale? You-you-you’ve got friggin’ wings! And- you’re covered in blood! How-how, I don’t understand, where did they come from? Why? Why do you have wings?” Dean was asking too many questions at the moment and she shook her head. One thing at a time. She focused and in one movement flicked the blood of her wings, watching it splatter the snow before nodding slightly. Good, that didn’t feel so gross now.
Glancing up when Dean stood, she nodded at the hand on her shoulder, which usually meant stay there, before he ducked around behind her. She knew he was just checking for damage, but the wings still ruffled up a bit in warning. It hurt still, a lot, and she didn’t want it touched yet.
“I think we should leave before somebody calls 911.” She said, getting to her feet with difficulty, Dean coming forward to wrap an arm gently around her hips. She shot him a thankful smile before hooking an arm around his neck to balance herself. It wasn’t easy, what with the wings arching high behind her. She could tell they were taller than Dean, and the bottoms hit the back of his knees. She could feel the weakness from what happened deep in her muscles and bones, letting out a soft sigh. This would take a while to get her energy back.
After a moment, Dean finally spoke up. “Shale, you said you thought you understood.” His voice was strained, as if he didn’t know if he should be asking this or not.
She took in a shaky breath before slowly nodding. After everything that had happened, he deserved to know. So she started on her story, about how her mom died in labour and her dad had just left, though now she knew he had probably been killed. He was an angel after all, though she hadn’t known her step mother meant it literally. She thought that maybe she had loved him, though it definitely wasn’t that…
She could feel the tears running down her cheeks as she spoke, her heart feeling heavy as she spoke about her past. It had been so long since she even thought about those horrible six years. She was lucky it hadn’t been longer. To her, that vampire had almost been a blessing, though she hadn’t realized it at the time.
As she finished, she felt Deans hand tighten and they slowly stopped, Dean turning to face her. He himself had a few tears on his cheeks, and she gave a tight lipped smile. She hated it when Dean cried… He looked so vulnerable and innocent. He didn’t speak though, simply brushed her tears away and gave her a kiss to her forehead. She kept back the words that threatened to come forward, or the action that she wanted to follow through on. To lean in and give him a kiss to his lips. Instead though, she simply dropped her gaze with a sigh.
“C’mon, let’s get you cleaned up.” He said and they slowly walked the rest of the way home, both silent and teary eyed.
Sam wasn’t at home when they got there, which was a blessing to Shale. She didn’t want to freak the younger teen out, though she was sure he would react more positively than negatively. Shale moved to the bathroom when Dean gave her a gentle push in that direction. Dean went to find antiseptic supplies while she maneuvered into the larger shower stall, standing awkwardly near the back wall, facing it.
“Dean, I don’t think I can do this by myself. I can’t even see behind me, let alone reach…” She murmured, giving him a tired look, silver eyes dull with weariness.
“Okay, I’ll help you of course.” He said, though Shale only barely caught it. His voice was soft, barely audible. Shale had the passing thought that maybe this was weird for him, being in the shower with the woman he practically called family. To allow Dean to fit, she wrapped her wings forward and around her body, pulling her hair forward to keep it from getting too wet. Anything to not focus on the feeling of Dean so close behind her.
Shale sucked in a breath when the water first cascaded over the open wounds, muscles tensed against the slight pain that was making an appearance. This she was used to though, getting in the shower with wounds, whether from a hunt or a scuffle with Dean or Sam. Even her father once or twice.
Soon enough though she became accustomed, easily relaxing when Dean started to run his fingers through her feathers. He didn’t realize it, but it felt amazing to have his fingers digging into the soft down beneath her primary feathers, and she even moaned his name once. She was lucky he didn’t hear it though, simply gritting her teeth to make sure she didn’t make another sound.
When he moved onto the cloth though, she tensed again, the roughness not feeling very nice when it tugged on the dried blood around her wounds. This time she didn’t hold back when she said Deans name, though it was in a hiss of pain. It didn’t last long luckily and soon the fluffy towels on the rack beside the shower were being used to dry the larger feathers.
“Thank you… For doing this Dean.” Shale finally murmured, almost not being heard from inside her cocoon. Dean did hear though and simply nodded, finishing up with the drying and helping her out.
“I’ll be right back okay?” He said before taking off down the hall somewhere. Shale watched him go, suppressing a flicker of longing before turning back to the mirror curiously. Something had always been missing to her, and she had tried make up, different clothes and styles, different hair styles. She now knew what was missing though, and she couldn’t help but smile at the sight of her wings behind her. She was complete finally…
When Dean came back, she turned to him, head tilting curiously at the clothes he brought back and what looked like a mauled t-shirt.
“Here, you’d probably figure it out yourself but I cut it so you could put it on like a normal t-shirt, but there’s a hole for your wings and you can tie the strips up in the back, so it’ll be easy to put on.” She watched as he held up the shirt, obviously proud, before she took it with a smile.
“You didn’t have to cut up one of your shirts; You could have used one of mine, Dean.” She watched as Dean simply smiled and gave a little shrug before leaving the room so she could change. She sighed before taking her ruined clothes off and starting to pull on the other items he had picked. She couldn’t help but be amused at the choices of undergarments he picked, red and black lace with some jewels.
“So classy Dean…” She murmured, chuckling to herself as she finished changing. Once she finally came out, she sat on the bed, wings moving automatically to a different position.
“I, uh, dunno if this’ll work on angel wings but I think we should probably try it anyways. Maybe it will help?” Shale just gave him a smile and a nod, shifting so she could lie down for him to apply the ointment. It hurt a bit, but not so much after the cream was actually on and she gave a soft sigh.
“Thanks doctor.” Shale said with a smirk once she had sat up, silver eyes gleaming with amusement. Dean just chuckled, seemingly glad that she was okay.
“Okay, uh, maybe I should go call dad.” Dean muttered, glancing to Shale for permission.
“I think I’d like to tell him myself… I’ll handle it.” Shale said with a determined look.
“Yeah, okay.” Before he could say anything else, there was the screeching of tires and the sound of bus doors opening, signaling Sam was home. The door downstairs opened and closed.
“Want me to handle Sam?” Dean asked in a whisper.
“Please,” Shale murmured, watching as Dean ducked out of her room. After a moment she removed her cell, taking a deep breath before dialing.
“This is John Winchester.”
“Um, hey dad…”
“Hi Shale. Is something wrong? You okay?” John always knew what her tones were like, since she had always been easier to read than his boys.
“Well, not exactly… You know how, as a child, I told you what my step mom did?” The other end was quiet for a moment. He was a bit shocked she was bringing this up so suddenly, especially after it had been buried for so long.
“… Yeah, I remember. What about it?”
“Well… She was right.”
“What? How was she right?”
“About my dad… How he was an angel, she wasn’t kidding. He was an angel dad, a real angel. My changes… Dad I’m part angel. I just grew wings for Christ sake!” The line was quiet for another moment, John trying to think through this new information. He knew Shale never joked around with the Supernatural. Ever.
“So basically… You’re a monster then.” Shale was shocked. Had her father really just said that?
“W-what? No, I’m not a monster… Dad I’m still me…”
“Shale, you grew wings. You have silver eyes and skin that glows in the dark. You’re just like the things we hunt.” She didn’t say anything, too shocked to answer.
“… By the time I get back, which is in two days, you better be gone. Don’t leave anything behind.” And with that, he hung up, leaving her stunned and sitting on her bed.
She took a few moments to get her emotions under control, tears threatening to spill over again like earlier. She had to be strong… She couldn’t tell Dean or Sam, they would be too upset.
She finally composed herself enough to put on a smile and go downstairs, letting Sam touch her wings and talk to him about what happened. When Dean asked what John said, she quickly lied about how he would be back in two days and would help to find something, like a cure or something to help. She just barely kept from starting to cry again. Afterwards, she retreated to bed, barely gaining any sleep. Tomorrow was the day she had to leave..
When she woke up, she rolled onto her back and stretched, starting in surprise when she realized she wasn’t lying on wings. Sitting up, she touched the t-shirt Dean made for her and frowned. With a whoosh, the wings appeared though, startling her into falling out of bed with a yelp.
She retreated to the bathroom, grinning when she sent the wings away again, touching the healed marks on her back. “Woah…” She murmured, completely speechless. If she could do that… What else could she do?
There was a knock on her door and Dean came in, Shale calling for him ot come into the bathroom.
“Check it out, its all healed…” She murmured, allowing him to examine her back and wings. “And there’s more, look-“
With a bit of concentration, her wings disappeared again and she grinned.
“Amazing right? I woke up and they weren’t there, and I thought it was a dream, but I was wearing the shirt. It was weird, like I could still feel them but I couldn’t see them or touch them, and my back was healed. I got a bit upset, but then they just showed up again, and this time it didn’t hurt, so I started trying to see if I could control them and it wasn’t even hard! I just have to concentrate, like you would do if you want to move your arm or something.” She was grinning after her explanation and Dean looked a little shocked.
“Wow, Shale. This is- I wonder what else you can do.” Her smile dimmed a bit and she shrugged, looking back to the mirror.
“Yeah, I have a lot to learn I guess…” After a moment she finally shooed him out, grinning.
“Go on, how about you take Sam to the park or something? He seems pretty antsy and you could use the fresh air.” Dean rolled his eyes but reluctantly agreed.
“Yeah, okay. I’ve got my cell on me if anything happens though so stay in touch. We shouldn’t be long, Sams such a wimp.” Shale smirks and shakes her head.
“Be nice to your brother. And Dean? Be careful okay.” She hesitates before leaning forward to gently kiss his cheek, hesitating just a little bit before pulling away. Dean looked confused, and a bit concerned, but when Shale practically pushed him and Sam out the door, he brushed it off. Nothing to be concerned about.
Except he did need to be concerned. She watched Dean disappear down the sidewalk with Sam, playfully shoving him before getting pushed into a snowbank. She chuckled, looking after them longingly before packing up her belongings in her lone duffel.
Glancing around once more, she wipes away a tear and sets a note under Deans keys where she knew he would find it. It was a note to tell him how much she loved him, how she actually loved him in a more than sisterly way, but that she had to leave. That their dad viewed her as a monster and that she had to go since she was in danger. She promised to find him though, someday, when it was safe.
With one last backward glance, she stepped out onto the sidewalk and started walking in the opposite direction Dean had gone, feeling the breeze flutter her feathers, as if trying to drag her back. She persisted though, disappearing into the swirling snow and sunshine, such a stark contrast to her life.
This song describes my ship of Dean and Shale perfectly....
Decided (after one of my fave role lay partners was on leave) that we should have some fluffy pics of our own ship Shaen. Enjoy love ;) (btw, credit to the artist in number six)
