Here’s the scoop-Many have visited Miyajima and probably have seen these crackers being sold. They are called Shakushi senbei (杓子せんべい). Though they are called senbei they are not made from rice like the senbei we usually imagine, but from sugar, wheat and eggs. They are shaped in the form of rice scoops and are imprinted with auspicious designs. Mine have the torii gates on the handle part and a design of a tortoise shell which is to pray for the well-being of one's family on the scoop part. During the Kansei era in Miyajima, a monk dreamt of the goddess Benzaiten (aka Benten, the goddess of flowing things such as water, time, words, music and knowledge among other things). Focusing on the shape of the musical instrument, biwa, that Benzaiten held, the “Miyajima scoop” or Miyajima shakushi was made of scared wood and was supposed to “scoop up” good fortune to those who ate using it. #shakushi #senbei #shamoji #miyajima #japansouvenir #japansweets #japanesefood #japanesecrackers #galletasdearroz #ข้าวอบกรอบ https://www.instagram.com/p/B835XaYnXDe/?igshid=1moh7f8km3m4w
