i already posted this one but i might as well include it here too. i drew all my af2 refs almost 2 years ago (JESUS!!!) so they dont reflect my current art style at all. and also they are pretty low effort in general. so i thought hey why dont i do them again ive been meaning to anyways. and well i did them in symbol order so i might as well do it again here.
you can see the new bunny features not present on the old design. when i was making the first batch of old refs (shallare signol compale) i had ideas that i forgot to include when making my other designs. mainly:
- including their background in some way
- and having their symbol on their clothes somewhere
this led to shallare having things that none of the other points do so im hoping to unify them all together this time around.
the main things i want to have are: symbol shaped hair or head wear, animal features, and cyalms symbol. the first one is mainly so i can play around with the shape of their heads, because they dont have faces and i REFUSE to give them faces there isnt too much to work with when it comes to making their heads look distinct. animal features is because i want them all to look a lil less human and also unification reasons (ulipse anshine and arrolin got animal(ish) features but no one else. Oops.). and cyalms symbol is for branding reasons. they belong to cyalm in a sense. to them cyalm is their leader and to cyalm the points are their characters. and if they were to have any logo for the points it would probably be cyalms symbol because they are Full of Themself.
I didnt think i would touch up their design much in all honesty but i wanted to try more things. the bunny feet boots were a must tho those are in every iteration.
the one pictured above i had pulled up a refrence of an actual mechanic's uniform yknow the jumpsuit ones. im glad i didnt end up going with it i dont think i would be able to live with making them almost one solid color. plus i think it And the apron wouldve been a lil much when colored in.
in these 2 here i considered going for a less literal bunny approach. instead of having literal bunny ears and tail they would have a suspiciously tail shaped rag and a bandana that made it look like they have bunny ears. i liked it for a while but as you can see i didnt go for it.
the 2nd to last iteration, there aren't many differences between this one and the final. in all honesty it is mostly the 3rd rendition with like 2 features from the 2nd mixed in, mostly the gloves. i think i was about to start inking when i decided that i wanted them to be a literal bunny and made some last minute additions to the sketch then.
for colors i mostly went with what my original sketch had, though i didnt color pick from it. i feel like it worked well and it is DEFINETLY better than the original design. bro that shit is all the same brightness when gray scaled its so bad.
anyways. other thoughts i had about shallare specificall character wise:
they are skinny, broad shoulders and a pretty thin waist. this is mostly supposed to mimic a kind of Slightly stronger than average build. i imagine as a mechanic they have to carry some heavy shit sometimes and they've built up a little bit of muscle from it. not enough to justify how little they actually work out but yknow.
they are intentionally pretty simple. they are the defacto tutorial point (sorry solgon) and because of that they are a really simple character that deserves a pretty simple design. this is part of why i dropped the spots on their arms and replaced them with freckles. both that and because it looked like they had a rash.
the white shirt with grease/oil stains is very important to me. they care about their appearence Just enough to wear something nice but not enough to clean it right. i think this is funny. plus it communicates their mechanic role just a bit more. in my mind.
they have the platforms for a similar reason. they are assumedly one of if not the best mechanic in the world given the 300 years of experience so i dont think they care too much about their safety for the most part. i look over at their prosthetic and look back at you. yeah. they are also on the shorter side of the points without the like 5 inches from the heels.
i wanted to make them some sort of forest creature, i mentioned that i considered making them a mouse but i think mino fits that better. i always imagine rabbits as being on the friendlier side of critters but they are also a bit temperamental, and shallare is pretty defensive so i think it fits. they are a cutie and also a bit petty. they are a bunny rabbit.
I played that game when it released, it was so super awesome to have a sequel to af1, and now i'm hyperfixated on it again because i got a friend into it and hes almost done...methinks we'll do world 8 together today idk but like yeh
