Cosmere Characters, Shallan & Vin are dating! What are your reactions?

1. Kaladin

Kaladin: But...how? Lopen: [gasping dramatically] Gancho! Don't be like that! Drehy: Yeah, Kal. Just like men can date and marry each other, so too can women. Skar: [shaking his head sadly] You've really got to get beyond those narrow-minded perspectives that still plague you. Kaladin: But...they live on different planets and aren't alive at the same time! Rock: Please! I haven't had to learn the Alethi word for "gay hating" and I don't want to start now! Kaladin: I FEEL LIKE I'M GOING CRAZY

2. Adolin & Elend

[Adolin & Elend are drinking together] Elend: I mean...I know Vin and I had something real. Elend: But I guess I can't complete with a woman who also takes on different personas for different situations, who's done spy stuff, who has complementary background trauma, who once got shot in the head and just sort of shook it off... Elend: [takes a long pull of whiskey] Elend: How are you holding up? Adolin: Oh, well, we're poly so it's totally fine. Elend: ... Elend: That's an option??

3. Veil & Radiant

Radiant: Vin's battle tactics are unbelievable. Radiant: I can't wait to see how Shallan grows as a result of this relationship. Veil: Yeah... Vin's pretty great... Veil: Pretty great... Super hot... Always barefoot... Can fly... Radiant: ... Radiant: Are you still sulking that Shallan is the one dating her instead of you? Veil: IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME

4. Kelsier and Dockson

Kelsier: I can't believe that Vin is dating ANOTHER noble! Kelsier: I want her to be happy 'n' all, but it's like: COME ON! Kelsier: Why can she not resist nobles who are also nerds?? Dockson: Does it help that Shallan has assassinated quite a few nobles in her time? Kelsier: I GUESS. Dockson: I think you'll come around.

5. Jasnah

Jasnah: Having once set up an arranged marriage to keep Shallan close due to her powers, I can certainly understand wanting to "lock down" a woman with that many abilities. Shallan: ...That's, uh, not really my motivation here. Jasnah: Please. I am trying to be supportive.

6. Sazed

Sazed: Relationships are about more than self-improvement and personal growth, of course. Sazed: But it might be nice for Vin to be with someone who can help her master noble society--and perhaps Vin can help Shallan pass in lower-class circles too. Vin: So...I need to cover my hand? Shallan: Yes!! It's like Noble Society 101! Sazed: ... Sazed: Right. Different planets.

7. Navani

Navani: [staring off into space after learning about Vin's childhood] Navani: I'm adopting her too.

8. Pattern

Pattern: Hmmm.... Shallan is three, sometimes four... Pattern: Vin is one, sometimes two... Pattern: So many numbers could never be wrong!

9. Marasi

Marasi: The Ascendant Warrior was famously part of the Survivor's team. Marasi: And from what I've read, Shallan ALSO joined (infiltrated?) Kelsier's Rosharan team! Marasi: .... Marasi: Could this mean...? Moonlight: Yup. If you had joined us, you could've had a girlfriend. Marasi: THAT WASN'T WHERE I WAS GOING WITH THAT

10. Hoid

Hoid: Sometimes very damaged people who aren't sure they deserve any happiness find each other. Hoid: And sometimes they find happiness in each other. Hoid: And the world is more beautiful for it. KelsIer: ...Please stop being a better father than me. Hoid: No. <3

[video starts with incredibly shaky, blurry footage, making it hard to distinguise anything. after a few moments it steadies and focuses.]

[a small figure sits several dozens of meters away, surrounded by three beasts. two are leaning again the person while the third, significantly larger than the other two, appears to be holding half of its body out of a hole. the person is facing the largest creature and gesturing with one hand, the other one scratching one of the beasts leaning against them. they appear to be conversing with the large creature.]

(indistinguisible curses) "...Shallan! Storms I hope this thing is working-"

(audibly annoyed) "Its working."

"Ok, ok! Good!"

[the footage zooms in, revealing the person to be a young woman surrounded by two whitespines and seeming to be conversing with a chasmfiend. the footage is significantly less steady now that it has been zoomed in.]

"There! Got it, ok, you can see that, yeah?"

"She's not going to be able to respond until you send this."

"Right, right. Anyway! SHALLAN! What do we do about your insane girlfriend?! What is she doing?! We can't get close without those things attacking us! I'm not armed and Kal refuses to help-"

"I told you it wasn't a good idea to try to go over there."

"That's not helping! We should be doing something!"

"She's clearly fine."

"Shouldn't you be worried about her? Isn't she's your friend? She's not a Radient! Those things could kill her in seconds!"

"She is my friend, we spar together. And that's why I'm telling you she's fine."

"That's a chasmfiend!"

[the shouting has clearly carried over to the group, as one of the whitespines' heads jerks up and it focuses on the cameraman. the beast begins to get up.]

(loud cursing)

"Storms, we're getting out of here. Shallan, come save your girl! I don't have my sword and like hell am I getting close to those things without it!"

[the camera jerks away as the whitespine begins to move towards the cameraman. the view becomes a jerky blur- whoever is filming has clearly begun to run.]

[the footage cuts]

voice recording sent in response:

[frantic rustling of papers, the person recording clearly running] "I'm on my way! Don't you DARE bother them again, this is my best shot to get a study of a chasmfiend that's calm!"

only halfway through the first book of the stormlight archives and everytime shallan gets a chapter i keep going 'god maya is SO right shallan and vin should kiss. they would see each other and invent yuri spren' so ur propaganda worked

AUGH hi thank you for this in particular!!!

1) What made you ship it?

@mayaeatsbooks. Like I don't think there's more to say about it. Objectively I hadn't so much as considered it until she started talking about it and now I'm #Team ShalVin for life.

2) What are your favorite things about the ship?

How they portray themselves in public is ABSOLUTELY exactly the other's type early in their series. Shallan is a somewhat snarky, intelligent aristocrat like Elend, and Vin is rough-around-the-edges and extremely competent, while also having a kind exterior if you get through the layers and layers and layers and layers of trauma like Kaladin!

3) Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Can you have an unpopular opinion on a ship with 6 works? I honestly don't know so I'll just give a general fandom opinion that I think applies here: You don't have to make it make sense within the framework of canon. ShalVin does not need to make sense—it only needs be made.
