Shams
Shams are among the most feared ambush predators of the Hallowdeep, and their true origin remains unknown. Scholars debate whether they are Hollowdeep natives, ancient Void-touched creatures, or the byproduct of some lost subterranean corruption. What is known is that they are patient, silent, and terrifyingly adaptive.
A Sham’s body is a mass of flexible flesh and cartilage that can reshape itself into the form of any object it has seen—stone pillars, crates, broken weapons, stalagmites, abandoned tools, even small shrines. Their camouflage is almost perfect, able to mimic texture, weight, and fine details with unnerving precision.
Shams are capable of remaining perfectly motionless for days or even weeks, waiting for prey to wander within reach. When the moment comes, they strike with astonishing speed, lashing out with one of their many hidden tentacles. Each tentacle ends in a hooked stinger capable of delivering a potent paralyzing venom. Once its victim collapses, the Sham drags the prey into its maw to feed in complete silence.
Most encountered Shams mimic objects in the 3–5 foot range, such as boulders or crates. However, explorers of the deeper levels of the Hallowdeep have reported Sham “objects” the size of Arkells—massive, building-sized beings lying in wait like dormant caverns. Such accounts imply that Shams may have no upper limit to their growth, making them one of the most unpredictable threats below Amyriad.
Where there is shadow and stillness, a Sham may already be watching.
