i saw where you said part of the reason they're making gallavich fight so much is that the writers think it's funny and that's logical, but what doesn't make sense is that is this an entirely new writing staff than back in the glory days? they never used to do this, when gallavich would fight it'd always be serious scenes and quality fights. not just played as "humor". also why do you think they don't write them as a team anymore like they did in s4/ s5. why always opposing? i miss that sfm
Hey! Thank you for for this. I’ve given this one some thought -- and I got another ask about the fighting, so I was going back and forth on whether or not to answer them together. But you guys are talking about different things.
There’s a thing about the fighting... I have noticed that it’s a real part of how the cast talk about it in the media -- like even way back. You can find promotional material from seasons 3 and 4 where even people like Jeremy Allen White are commenting on how fighting then fucking is the Gallavich thing. Cam and Noel make jokes about how the fight scenes and the sex scenes are sometimes the same thing in interviews. It’s a talking point.
Reduced to a talking point, it isn’t very accurate. It really only describes their first encounter. Which brings us to something I’ve nearly meta’ed a dozen times before -- but it’s SO niche -- It’s sudden prevalence in their story reminds me of American soap operas.
It’s SUCH a familiar dynamic on those shows. They have an actor, he’s very popular, and at some point he leaves to seek his fortune. If he comes back after a few years -- or if they recast -- then they have to reestablish the character. Which usually results in a bit of a heavy hand when it comes to the signposts of the characters. I feel like I see a lot of that with Mickey and a bit of it with Gallavich, too. Stuff happens and it feels like the memory of the character and because of that it doesn’t land as authentic. I don’t think it’s overwhelming, but I think it contributes to why they fight so much now.
As for why they aren't a team... really the story right now is them trying to align to BE a team. Mickey and Ian have conquered all the old demons and survived prison together -- I’m glad they aren’t doing something retro, but it is still frustrating to watch them at SUCH odds right now. But I think that’s a product of telling a story that is built around the fact that they have to figure out how to be married to each other. I’m really hoping that we are about to exit this stage and enter a stage where we’ll see them working together a lot more.
Fingers crossed!
