The main thing I hate about the odyssey discourse is people saying "anyone who judged the movie based on accents or costuming decisions are just idiots" like hey! Visuals and the way characters sound are actually a pretty important aspect of a film! Just because you value them less doesn't mean people's opinions are entirely void!

I made a point one time about how every, what, two years a prominent film director will make a movie that's essentially- Holy shit guys!!! War is bad!!! Did you know this? War destroys society!!! War is a really shitty thing to do! The desperation of men and hunger for power via the selfish elite will destroy society! Has anyone thought of this before??? Then they proceed to make a big loud movie about it with little nuance or cleverness and they get lauded and praised as a literal genius defying the odds when to me it's like. Yeah. War IS bad. What else? You still have to make a good movie with compelling characters. You still have to make a GOOD movie that makes me FEEL emotions. I'm sorry but when your movie is being marked to me as an epic journey that will transcend generations and then the final point being made is "guys. Idk if you know this, but, war's bad 😔" I'm going to have to stop myself from laughing out loud in the theatre because HOLY SHIT. YEAH. NOW WHAT? WAR DESTROYS SOCIETY. WHAT ELSE? The Odyssey is genuinely one of those films where I feel like an asshole for not liking it because everyone else around seemed to think it was mind-blowing but I just. Didn't get it.

IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic.

Ok, now that I’ve seen it, thoughts on The Odyssey

It’s a pretty good film, will probably get Oscar nominated, although I don’t think it’s the hugely significant film it’s being touted as.

First what I didn’t like - some parts felt very rushed. Like he just wanted to get that part of the story - like Polyphemus - over and done with. There was very little characterisation outside Odysseus, Telemachus, and a few others. It’s all in a very muted colour scheme, which made it difficult to see what was going on. Telemachus and Odysseus both presented as flawless people which they’re not. Some of the script - such as Telemachus calling Odysseus ‘dad’ feels jarring.

The good stuff. Anne Hathaway as Penelope was magnificent, Lupita Nyong’o very good as a furious Helen and Clytemnestra, Samantha Morton fantastic as Circe in one of the very best sequence of the movie. The use of Athena in the end was inspired.

Penelope and Agamemnon are shot very cleverly, one constantly hidden, the other always faceless.

And there’s a theme here which Nolan first started to illustrate in Oppenheimer. The wholesale destruction of Troy - the destruction of the temples, the use of a ‘gift from the gods’ to fool the Trojans - it broke the laws, Zeus’ law of friendship, companionship, helping one another. The horrific destruction of Troy - leading to PTSD for Odysseus, and the triumph of cruelty from the victors, lead to the destruction of this civilisation, although another will rose. It’s an idea that Nolan started to explore in Oppenheimer - such destruction horrifies its creator, makes humanity crueler and colder and distrustful and leads to the collapse of civilisation. In the end, all that will be left of us is songs. It’s this that interests in him, it’s these moments - Odysseus return, the sack of Troy - that are the best in the movie, other sequence - like the sirens - are just something to be got through to get to the good stuff.

Not as bad as expected. Not as good as it could have been. I can see how the Nolan who wrote Oppenheimer read the Odyssey and came to this story.

nolan’s odyssey is such a textbook study on the idiocy and dangers of presentism. yes of course penelope is a modern day feminist who wants to rule ithaca by herself. they make telemachus say that GREECE IS THE GREATEST CIVILIZATION IN THE WORLD as if the entire point of the massing of achaeans at troy for one unified cause isn’t spectacular precisely because THERE IS NO CONCEPT OF A UNIFIED GREECE NATIONS DO NOT EXISTTTTTT YETTTTT. literally 101 on historical writing is making sure that you’re avoiding strict periodization because the people living in a “period” will not identify themselves that way. ever. five million cheeky nods to “the sea peoples” but we’re being cute and coy and calling them “the people from the sea.” the obsession with xenia but refusal to call it xenia yes let’s say “zeus’s law” a hundred times and reduce it to the literal expectation that any stranger could be a god in disguise. how was penelope just hanging out in the main hall of the palace with her husband’s dinner guests while they were playing with weapons with her HAIR COMPLETELY DOWN no veil no nothing just chilling casually. comical. stoppppp making movies that engage in historical viewpoints if you’re going to slather a modernized coat of paint over the top. “the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.” or fucking whatever.

The “nobody” scene in the odyssey is absolutely not just a clever pun—it’s a character defining moment for Odysseus because he refuses to be nobody. He devised an incredible plan that worked and he could have saved his men and returned home much sooner but he just had to yell to the cyclops that he isn’t nobody—he’s Odysseus, king of Ithaca so now Poseidon knows who to curse which severely fucks up the rest of the journey.

The “nobody” scene highlights both Odysseus’s cleverness but also his arrogance and those two traits define Odysseus throughout the entire story. It’s a foundational aspect of Odysseus’s character and cutting the scene displays a shocking level of ignorance and disregard for the themes in the source material.
