Soriku-coded KHII manga is quite intriguing, and Sora believes that every hooded person is Riku. If Sora perceives you as an obstacle in his quest to find Riku, you’ll be dealt with accordingly by Sora.

Sora defeats Storm Rider with a single blow and defeats Shan-Yu alone.

After being defeated by Sora, Shan-Yu is put out of his misery by Xigbar, with Sora watching from a few feet away.

Even though Xigbar intended to demonstrate the Organization’s power to Sora, and if he had wanted to, he could have ended Sora. Luxord had a similar opportunity during the second return to Port Royal in Kingdom Hearts 2, where he chose to spare Sora’s life instead of just ending him right there.

31 Days of Disney Villainy - Number 20

The 31 Days of Disney Villainy Continues! I’m counting down my Top 31 Favorite Villains from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film output. “Let’s get down to business…you complete the line!” Number 20 is…Shan-Yu, from Mulan.

Right out of the gate, I want to say that I feel kind of bad for having Shan-Yu just barely nip into the Top 20. There are a number of people I know personally who would name him as among their favorite Disney Villains, if not their absolute favorite. And trust me, I can totally see why. What I think makes Shan-Yu such a great villain is that he almost feels like a bad guy out of a different kind of movie. If you took Shan-Yu out of the picture, Mulan would actually be a relatively lighthearted movie. It’s got a lot of humor, a lot of great songs, a lot of really zany animation…it’s an energized and strange kind of story with touching and relevant themes to teach and a lot of fun at its core. HOWEVER, it is thanks to Shan-Yu’s presence that, when you get down to it, Mulan basically becomes less like a typical Disney film and more like…well…a war movie. Because that’s exactly what the story is about: the Chinese army vs. The Huns, in a battle for the land. Fittingly, Shan-Yu doesn’t feel like characters such as, say, Jafar or Ursula. He feels more like the villain of an action film, or a great war epic: he’s dead serious, with a dark, dry sense of humor, a shadowy design that looks more monstrous than human, and anytime he takes the screen, he and his followers immediately instill the happenings with a sense of dread and menace. On top of that, he’s arguably the most LETHAL of all Disney Villains: other villains are presumably responsible for countless deaths prior to their arrival, and other villains are responsible for deaths within their own stories, some more obvious than others...but with those who kill many, MANY people, usually it’s done through simple implication. When Frollo burns Paris to the ground, it takes you a little time to think back and wonder if anybody was in the buildings he burned, and it’s never confirmed either way. Scar kills Mufasa right in front of us, but that’s about the only murder he successfully handles onscreen. The Evil Queen has a dungeon full of rotting bones, but who knows what those prisoners were like, and if she was even the one who put them down there? When Shan-Yu razes a village to the ground (taking seemingly sadistic delight in the prospect, incidentally), and at the same time SLAUGHTERS the main force of the Chinese army, including Shang’s father in the process…sure, we see no bodies, we never see the attack happen…but there is no mere implication there or sense of afterthought. That’s HUNDREDS of people, BUTCHERED, and they do NOT sugarcoat that fact. And when you couple that with tons of other people who are killed or presumed killed throughout the film, not to mention wondering what sort of crimes this cad did before the story even started…yeah, he’s arguably got the single biggest BODY COUNT of any Disney Villain, at least within “The Great 58.” If that alone isn’t worth commending, I don’t know what is. Tomorrow, the countdown continues with my 19th Favorite Disney Villain! HINT: She’s BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, I TELL YOU! GENIUS, I SAY!
