Guys.. I couldn’t stop thinking about this! So I’m going to continue it!
Gosh I hope I don’t mess this up....
shiro is head over heels in love with lance and he thinks lance likes him too. one evening after dinner, he pulls his teammate aside and confesses his feelings. lance smiles sadly, before telling shiro that he’s sorry. he doesn’t feel the same.
shiro gets all flustered and tells lance not to worry about it. he says he’s sorry if he made things awkward and hopes they can still be friends. lance says of course they can, and asks if it’s okay to give shiro a hug. shiro agrees and they hug, and afterwards lance goes to his room and leaves shiro in the hallway alone.
shiro sulks back to his room, mentally berating himself for thinking lance could possibly like him back when he knows the boy has a thing for allura. he tries not to get sad about the fact that his unrequited feelings are now known, but hugging lance had only made his heart hurt more. he leans against the wall on his bed, curled up with his blankets and thinks back to the garrison when he’d confessed to keith. keith hadn’t felt the same either and it hurt, but he’d gotten over it and was able to be friends with keith nonetheless. he knows he can get over lance too, but for some reason, this time hurts him more than the first.
he thought for certain that lance at least likes guys, but maybe not. or maybe it’s just him. he’s not sure what it is about him that makes him someone that no one likes. maybe he’s too friendly so they all think he’s just a bro. or maybe he’s just going for the wrong people. or maybe he really just is meant to be alone. whatever it is, it keeps shiro awake most of the night.
but hey, at least it’s better than staying awake from remembering his past in the arena. he’d take heartbreak over that any day.
Just A Dream
This is heavily based off of Carrie Underwood's song 'Just A Dream' so uh, there's character death, and, read at your own risk? (The italicized text is supposed to be 'memories', regular text is present time.)
Lance sat beside Shiro in his '65 Chevy. It was dark outside- it was late. Make The World Go Away was playing low on the car radio. Shiro rested his prosthetic arm around Lance's shoulder, the cool metal against his shoulders making him shiver slightly, but he leaned into Shiro's touch still.
The younger boy was looking down at his hands, deep in thought until he heard Shiro ask him, "You still thinking about tomorrow?" Lance turned his head to look up at his boyfriend, wide eyed. "It's against the rules," Shiro smirked. Lance smiles, and spoke softly, "What rules?"
Shiro took a deep breath, looking away for a moment to compose himself in faux seriousness, then glanced back to him. "Well, I decided, that tonight, we would just be together, not think about stuff." He smiled and looked down for a moment, "Just you and me. That's all that matters."
Lance looked away, back to his hands resting in his lap. "I guess I'm just, nervous, about tomorrow." He looked back up at Shiro, who replied, "Tomorrow's just another day."
He could tell Lance was still worrying, so then he said, "We've got our whole life planned for us, it's perfect." He smiled softly. Lance held his gaze. "Promise?"
Shiro chuckled and leaned in for a kiss, "I promise,"
Of course, they were just trying to delay the inevitable. He should just focus on here and now, but it was easier said than done.
----------------------------------
It was two weeks after the day he turned eighteen, Lance was halfway up the road, he kept checking himself in his mirrors- It was a big day for him- For both of them. He could feel his emotions building up, as he glanced in the passenger seat at the box of letters Shiro had written to him while he was away at war. Pulling up to the church, he stepped out of the car, before walking around to grab the box of letters. His nerves were a wreck, he was shaking-
----------------------------------
As he walked up the steps, the big church doors opened wide. Lance bowed his head, not able to bring himself to look at anyone, tears flowing freely down his cheeks, he couldn't help it now.
-----------------------------------
Lance couldn't help the goofy smile plastered on his face as he walked down the aisle, the eyes of both their families following him, as he approached the altar, where Shiro stood in his uniform, a big smile to match his own.
They service went forward, they recited their vows and I do’s, and when the preacher said, “I now pronounce you husbands, you may-” Lance threw himself at Shiro, pulling him into a deep kiss, as their families and friends erupted into cheers.
After Shiro was shipped off once again, only a week after their wedding, Lance stood in their kitchen, washing a few dishes. He saw through a slit in the kitchen window’s curtains, a car pulling up the driveway.
Frowning slightly, he walked to the front door just as the man was exiting his car, and walked up the porch steps. He opened the door and was taken aback by whom he saw.
“Keith?” Lance spoke. Keith was an officer, right below Shiro in ranking, and a close friend of theirs. “What- What are you doing here? Is Shiro with you-?”
Keith cleared his throat and handed Lance a piece of paper- an envelope, all while keeping his formal composure, and recited to Lance, "I have been asked to inform you that your husband has been reported dead. On the behalf of the Secretary of Defense, I extend to you and your family my deepest sympathy in your great loss." Lance stared down at the now open letter, that read:
Dear Mr. Shirogane,
The department of the Army deeply regrets to inform you that your husband,
Private First Class, Takashi Shirogane, U.S. Army, was killed in action in the
performance of his duty and his service to his country.
The department extends to you it's sincerest sympathy in your great loss.
Lance brought a shaking hand up to cover his mouth, tears flowing down his cheeks. Keith broke his composure, reaching out to Lance. The younger boy collapsed into Keith, sobbing.
Keith spoke soothing words to him as he cried, only managing to mumble, “No, not Shiro, not Shiro,”
-------------------------------
He made his way to the closed casket, he felt numb, like it was a dream- God, he wished it was just a dream.
The trumpets of the military band sounded, and the flowers in Lance’s hands hit the floor. He fell to his knees and threw his arms over the casket, tears freely flowing now, and couldn’t help the choked sobbing that erupted from him. He buried his face in his arms, shaking as he sobbed uncontrollably.
Soft murmurs of, “He’s not coming home now,” could be heard amongst those at the service, as if they thought Lance couldn’t hear them.
He raised his head to gaze at the framed photo of his deceased lover, and cried out, “Why’d you leave me? Why- w-we had everything planned out, we had forever- You promised, Kashi! Why did you have to go-” Lance’s mother approached him and brought him to his feet, gently. “Come now, honey, please,” he could hear the hurt in her voice. She wiped his tears away and brought him to a seat beside her in the front row.
Once everyone was settled, the preacher began, “Now let us bow our heads and pray… Lord please lift his soul, and heal this hurt,”
This went on, until he brought the prayers to an end, then Lance watched through tears as the congregation stood and began to sing the saddest song he had ever heard.
He stood, and was approached by an officer with a folded flag, which was then handed to him. Lance clutched it close to his chest, holding on tight to the last he had of Shiro, and all that could have been.
The guns rang one last shot, and Lance felt like he took a bullet straight through his heart. He began to feel distant, everyone was up and moving around, approaching him with their pity and own sorrow, but it was like he was standing at a distance, only observing, from the background of his own life.
He shut his eyes, allowing the last of his tears to fall. This can’t be happening to me, this is just a dream.
“Why must you go where I can’t follow?”

Fic Excerpt:
An afternoon sun burns bright as two teenage boys drive down the winding country road. Summer is upon them, which means time away from school to hang out with family, friends, but mostly each other. Hot summer days to spend swimming in lakes or pools, cool summer nights to spend... well, together.
They had stopped for ice cream on their way, deciding that it’s too hot outside to go without a scoop or two on their little journey. Songs play on the radio despite the rolled down windows blocking out their sound from wind whipping in and back out. Instead, laughter fills the car as Lance tries his best to feed Shiro bite after bite of quickly melting ice cream while the older boy drives.
“This isn’t working, Lance.”
“Just try one more time,” the brunet says, bringing the spoon up for Shiro to close his mouth around.
“Lance- Lance! It’s dripping!” Shiro says, trying to keep an eye on the road while ice cream runs down his chin.
“Sorry!” Lance giggles, and he grabs a napkin to wipe off Shiro’s face.
“Why don’t you finish yours and I’ll eat mine when we get there.”
“But Shiro! Yours will be all melted by then!”
“Then I’ll drink it,” Shiro sasses, looking away from the road for a quick moment to smile at Lance.
They finally arrive at their destination and Shiro pulls his truck into an orchard of tall apple trees, parking with the bed facing the horizon. The place looks abandoned, but there are still a few blooming trees here and there that suggest otherwise. Shiro opens his door and gets out, not forgetting to grab his ice cream, and moves to unlock the tailgate for them to sit. Lance follows closely behind, jumping up onto the flatbed just as Shiro puts down a blanket.
They sit together a while, finishing their ice creams as they make jokes and tell stories about silly things their teachers did the past semester. The yellow field sways around them and the sun moves lower in the sky signaling the passing of time. Their empty cups become long forgotten behind them while they shoot the breeze.
A short silence waves over them with the wind as they stare out into the orchard, sky and trees seemingly endless from multiple directions. The silence is enough to make Lance restless, so he jumps off the truck and waits for Shiro to follow him.
The two walk along, passing tree after tree, most dead but some still hanging onto life. Lance asks what Shiro wants to do after they graduate and Shiro jokes about biking the Appalachian mountains or learning to sail a boat.
“I’d like to write a book someday,” Lance says matter-of-factly.
“Really?”
“Yeah, wouldn’t that be cool?”
“I guess so,” Shiro laughs. “What about?”
“Me,” Lance says, raising his shoulder like a model.
They both laugh at his answer, the younger boy’s conceit at an all time high.
“Not really,” he continues, quieter. “Maybe I’ll write a book about you.”
Looking down, he reaches over and taps Shiro’s hand gently with his before entwining their fingers. The older boy jumps and looks around to see if anyone is out there to catch them.
“It’s okay. It’s just us,” Lance comforts.
Shiro nods and squeezes Lance’s hand in his own, relaxing as they continue walking through the empty field.
