I find it interesting that the ‘98 movie and ACS Versace take similar approaches to this scene with the use of classical music, no dialogue, and dramatic eye contact between killer and victim (though the ‘98 movie manages to be even more over the top with lots of blood splattering and slo-mo). Where they differ is the lead-up to the murder; in the ‘98 movie Versace takes a different route to the cafe and his sorrowful mood foreshadows his death, while in ACS he is the unsuspecting victim. The ‘98 movie is a little more accurate in this regard, as:
On Tuesday Versace headed out around 8:30 a.m. According to some witnesses, he approached the cafe that morning by an unusual route, coming from the other side of the street, though his home and the cafe were on the same side. "He walked past the entrance, circled back around and then went in," says Stephanie Vanover, the News Cafe's hostess. "It's almost as though he knew someone was following him."
The ‘98 movie is also the most accurate in depicting how the murder happened, with Versace getting shot at the back of the head, then another to the cheek as he fell to the ground.
The ‘08 movie stumbles by choosing to tell Cunanan’s motivations via a law enforcement agent giving a press conference, instead of showing it through Cunanan himself. Sure the actor for Cunanan may not be world class, but he should still be able to convey his character’s emotions better than a guy at a podium. The editing also confusingly jumps between the press conference, Cunanan’s time in the boat, and the murder itself. As far as story climaxes go, it was a weak one imo.
