Shane Torres hilariously defends Guy Fieri. I have personally met both Guy Fieri and Anthony Bourdain and I can't tell you enough about how much I want to knock Bourdain's pompous ass to the ground. I don't trust a food critic who smokes before he tastes a meal and critiques it. Your palette is tainted, your opinions are skewed. He's rude as hell and has no common courtesy. Guy Fieri is hilarious and he's always drunk. The motherfucker makes so many donations to actual good charities it's absurd no one has pointed it out. I don't like his food but I like him.
We're taking these porgs to FLAVORTOWN!
FLA-VOR-TOWNNNNNNN!
First, let me preface this by saying the fact that we live in a world where “celebrity chef” is even a thing is probably a sign we’re living in the End Times, but whatever:
A second preface: I was inspired by hearing this bit, by the comedian Shane Torres: I’ve been saying basically the exact same things as he does in his routine for quite awhile now, but he beat me to the punch. I just don’t want anybody accusing me of stealing his thunder.
When he first came roaring into our lives behind the wheel of his red Camaro, I was as irritated by Guy Fieri as anybody else--what’s not to find irritating about him: his obnoxious fashion, his fucked-up hair, his devotion to wearing sunglasses on the back of his head, etc--but over the last, I dunno, year or so, the scales have sort of fallen from my eyes.
The guy--Guy?--is obviously a real doofus, and 100% Not Cool, but look: he just wants to travel around and eat deep-fried hamburgers with stuffed-crust pizzas for buns, and he wants you to do the same thing, and he wants to make a bunch of money doing it. God bless him. I can’t speak for the “real” Guy, but the character he plays actually seems like he’d be pretty fun to hang around with.
The one I got no time for at all is that Bourdain, king of Trying Way Too Hard. It boggles my mind how the same people who equate Fieri with Hitler are so charmed by Bourdain, who’s the biggest phony in the world: Ooh, an old white guy with a Ramones t-shirt and an earring? What’s that? He likes Charles Bukowski too?
There’s this extremely annoying video of Bourdain eating--he claims--for the first time at a Waffle House: typical of him, he waxes faux poetic about the place, winking at the viewer the whole time, showing off what he thinks is his eloquence and intellect. Guy Fieri on the other hand looks like he was born at a Waffle House, and I can guarantee you he’d be absolutely down to go to one, and wouldn’t try to show off how much smarter he thinks he is than you.
