Day 13 - When did you realize you weren't straight

when every other aroace my age did,

with the release of JaidenAnimations' "Being Not Straight"

Carlos Jauregui was an LGBTQ+ rights activist in Argentina during the 80's and 90's.

His activism was based on searching visibility, he wrote articles in newspapers and went to tv programs to talk about LGBTQ+ issues.

He helped to get the first project of civil union for same gender couples, and laws against discrimination towards LGBTQ+ people, he also lead the first lgbtq+ parade in buenos aires, in 1992.

One of the most iconic things he did related to the media was being on the magazine cover of the magazine "Siete Dias" hugging another LGBTQ+ rights activist, Raúl Soria, in 1984. That cover was the first one to show a gay person talking openly about being gay.

(The cover says "the risk of being homosexual in Argentina", and " siete dias" means seven days).

On April 16th of 1984 LGBT activists created the CHA, comunidad homosexual argentina, and jauregui was the first president of said organización, their principal objective was to fight against policial repression.

Carlos Jauregui died in 1996, and August 20th is the day of Activism For Sexual Diversity (or LGBTQ+ rights) in commemoration of his death.

Two of his most iconic phrases were "The origin of our fight is the desire for all freedoms" and "In a society that teaches us shame, pride is a political response"

Nowadays, annually in september, there are "jornadas de homenaje a Carlos Jauregui" which are events with LGBT music, films and poetry jams, among other things, to remember and honor him.
