Continued from Part 5 (Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 )
Pleasure Island was just as grand as Doofwick had promised. There were games galore, each giving out a different type of candy to the winner. There was a roller coaster, a carousel, and a canal with little boats that bobbed merrily along. Boyd, Doofwick, and Louie, all laden with sweets, were headed towards the billiards hall at the end of the pier when they heard the voices of Huey and Dewey calling out to them.
“I thought you guys weren’t coming,” said Louie, setting his
“We weren’t, but Uncle Donald made enough money at the vegetable stand today that he gave us some coins to come over here!” Dewey pointed to a rowboat off the end of the pier, behind them, which Donald was preparing to tie to the docks.
Suddenly, a huge shark wearing a parka loomed out of the depths. Donald’s frantic squawking was abruptly cut off as the Sharka and swallowed the boat whole. The dock shuddered with the impact, causing Boyd, Louie, and Doofwick to drop their treats.
“That sea monster ruined my ice cream!” screamed Doofwick.
“Forget your ice cream, it’s going to eat us if we don’t get out of here!” shouted Huey, who started to run. Boyd, who had taken the time to wind his key while they were in line for the roller coaster, moved quickly. But Louie, Dewey, and Doofwick had all stopped to pick up the scattered candy, and when the monster loomed up again, all three of them disappeared.
The Sharka leapt once more, then, with a flick of its tail, sped off towards the horizon.
“We have to go rescue them!” Boyd cautiously returned towards the edge of the pier.
“But what if it swallows us too?”
“The Blue Sorceress said to be a real boy, I must be brave! And the brave thing to do would be to go and rescue your family from the Sharka!”
“But I’m a real boy, and I’m not brave enough to go out there,” said Huey.
“I’m scared too,” said Boyd, “But we have to save them. Look, there’s a raft we can use.”
They leapt onto the raft. Huey, who had worked on boats with his Uncle Donald, quickly set the sail and showed Boyd how to handle the oars. Boyd sped his gears and propelled them along faster than Huey had ever sailed before, and soon, they could see the Sharka, sleeping in the water, with its head just above the waves.
“How are we going to
“Uncle Donald’s Survival Guidebook says that if we make a sea monster sneeze, it will spit out whatever it swallowed last.”
“How can we make it sneeze?” asked Boyd.
“Maybe with smoke from a fire?” Huey patted his pockets, but his matches were soaked and would not strike.
Boyd thought for a moment, then realized the effort of paddling had made his gears feel quite hot. “I can help with that!” He focused the heat in his clockwork and released it in a bright beam, causing the wooden raft to begin smoldering.
The Sharka sniffled.
Huey removed his hat, using to fan more smoke towards the Sharka.
It sniffed again.
“Just a little more,” said Huey, and Boyd took off his own hat to help.
The Sharka sniffed a third time, then let out a monstrous sneeze, which raised an almighty wave, carrying their raft towards the shore. They could hear the screams of Donald, Dewey, Louie, and Doofwick behind them in the rowboat, which, like Huey predicted, had been spit out by the Sharka’s sneeze.
Raft and boat soon crashed onto a narrow beach, where a worried-looking Gypettro ran down and hugged Boyd.
“I’m sorry, Father! I didn’t follow any strange adults, but I went with another kid, and then this monster came, and–”
There was a sudden flash of blue light, quickly followed by green and violet, and all three sorceresses were standing on the shore. The Blue Sorceress stepped forward.
“Twobocchio, as you have shown deceit, selfishness, and cowardice, it seems that the spell cannot last. As the sun sets, you will become an automaton once again.”
“Wait a minute!” said Dewey, shaking sand out of his cap, “I followed Honest Mark to Glomboli’s theater, too! I was just as dishonest as Boyd was, and I’m still a real boy!”
“And I went to Pleasure Island with Doofwick,” said Louie, “I know that I was being selfish, but that doesn’t mean I’m not a real boy!”
“And I nearly wasn’t brave enough to save my family from the Sharka!” Huey added, looking much braver now as he stood in front of the Sorceress. “Boyd had to help me, so why shouldn’t he be a real boy?”
“Just like the rest of us!” Dewey crossed his arms.
The three sorceresses looked at each other, then the Green Sorceress smiled. “That is quite clever.”
“He showed bravery, honesty, and self-sacrifice in the end,” said the Violet Sorceress.
“Perhaps you’re right,” said the Blue Sorceress, “With both the virtues and the flaws he has learned from the triplets, it seems that Boyd has earned his boyhood after all.”
“Come, my daughters, let us make the spell permanent.” the Green Sorceress beckoned them.
There was a sparkling swirl of octarine as the Green, Blue, and Violet magicks melded together and settled around Boyd. The Duck triplets waited with bated breath as the spell dissipated.
Boyd tapped on his beak. It gave a metallic clang. “I don’t feel any different,” said Boyd, “I thought I was supposed to turn into a real boy! Like Huey, Dewey, and Louie!”
Gypettro stepped forward and scooped Boyd into his arms. “Just because you’re made of metal, doesn’t make you any less real. Shall we go home, my son?”
And they all lived their lives, real lives, lives both virtuous and flawed, ever after.
