On July 28, 1945, after having delivering crucial components for the first operational atomic bomb to a naval base on the Pacific island of Tinian, the USS Indianapolis sailed to Guam without an escort. The next day she was struck by a Japanese torpedo on her starboard bow, sinking in just 12 minutes. Of the 1,196 men aboard, 900 made it into the water alive. Bu their ordeal was just beginning.
