Which verse of the Chant of Light is most representative of your Dragon Age OC and/or your OC’s relationship with their love interest?

I was tagged by @sharp-sparks 1000 years ago to assign verses from the Chant of Light to my Dragon Age characters. I must say, this has been my favorite tag to date and I spent way too much time on it. It’s such a wonderful idea!

I woke up thinking of asking you this question and it just hasn't left me alone, so: If Solas is slated to return for the next DA game, would you rather Weekes continue being responsible for writing his character or have someone else take up that responsibility?

Good question!

Short answer: Nah he needs to finish what he started even though its gonna take some leaps and bounds of suspending belief to reconcile whats about to go down in DA4.

Long answer: I feel Weekes can’t do what needs to be done and make Solas an antagonist. Solas is an awkward, somewhat geeky guy with undeniably violent intentions and the power to back it up who needs to be defeated. He’s a villain. Thats it. I get Solas is really dense and has to be proven wrong 5x more than the average person -- its my favorite aspect of him and #relatable -- but hes still a villain. He’s not the unsung dark knight of this story; hes the monster.

I feel the reluctance to admit that -- that Solas isnt the misunderstood sad soul with excusable but necessary methods his creator insists he is -- has hurt his character substantially. Its like the worst parts of him are protected so Weekes can keep spinning him as an anti-hero. I felt my hands were tied and my dialogue was limited when it came to challenging or confronting Solas in any real capacity in hopes of my son growing and learning one (1) whole lesson. His evil is excused as sad but necessary. His arrogance is accepted as wisdom. We forgive his awful viewpoints because he’s out of touch and sad; and at least your Inquisitor is ‘one of the good ones’ in his eyes.

Its all terribly illusioned and irritating and maybe a change of hands is necessary.

At any rate yall will see me with my $60 on release day anyway cause Im a sucker for Thedas, my criminal children, and even Sebastian.

Also from what I’ve seen of Weekes’ perspective on elven culture and elves in general I just dont think he can handle them responsibly. And I say this only because I read Masked Empire & took a close look at his work on Inquisition and feel he has a tendency to project. 

Celene not digging elves and believing their oppression is a necessary and often times useful evil is fine; its very believable characterization and makes sense. Having multiple characters repeat that mindset consistently is just too persistent to be a coincidence, you know what I mean?

And not only do his characters come across as feeling like mouthpieces to me but the content of what theyre parroting bothers me to no end. 

Briala belittles the Dalish for being ungrateful toward Celene. Solas bemoans everyone who forces him to identify as an elf. Felassan suggests the nobles of Arlathan were slavers no better than those in present-day Tevinter. Weekes’ suggestions of what elves should feel towards their culture and each other shows me he has no first hand experience with these sorts of conflicts and should pass the baton to someone who does.

I feel like you put into words why I'm finding it so difficult to write solavellan fic, and earlier anon was spot on when they said it's actually quite soothing to read all of your Solas critical posts. It is.

Mood. Their relationship has a lotta snags that are weird to navigate. I still dont know how to reconcile the Fenharel thing because thats a big risky ass problem all on its own. Do your best tho! Past the hurdles it can be so cute. :’V
