2. How did the children become a part of the family? Were they born into it? Adopted? Somehow else? Talk about the journey! :D
Harold didn’t consider Shaun to be family before the war, since they weren’t related at all, and he had only lived with Shaun’s parent for a short time before everything went down.
After meeting Synth Shaun at the Institute, he started talking to him more often when he came to visit. Since Harold doesn’t really have a speech-filter whatsoever, he spared no details when telling about his fights and how harsh the surface is. Lucky for him though, Shaun thought his stories were exciting, and then they had that to bond over. Harold never thought he’d want to get children, but he got awfully fond of Shaun, and personally asked the others to keep an eye out for him before the whole Institute Thing. He was delighted to find out that he was alright and actually wanted to go with him.
Harry didn’t consider taking Shaun in for real at first, due to his unlucky parent experience in the past, and it took a lot of thinking and talking with Preston before they eventually agreed that it was actually what they both wanted. To their luck, Shaun was very excited to get a new home and two brand new real dads.

13. Does the character have any meaningful items they pass on to their children? Like an old toy, or a piece of jewelry, or some other family heirloom?
Harold passes on all his knowledge on lock picking to Shaun, and yes that totally counts as a heirloom trust me. It’s not just so Shaun can steal things, lock picking is just a useful thing to be able to do, at least if you ask Harold. According to him, you never know when you need to break in or out of somewhere. You just never know.
