It felt like a nightmare come true. She never would’ve expected Shane O’Neill to propose, but there he did. After months of him staying around, hanging by her side, honestly how was she so naive to believe he simply wanted friendship?
Shane wasn’t a bad man, he was someone she quite enjoyed the company of, someone she got along with, someone she cared about, but he wasn’t the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. He wasn’t the love of her life. That was Billy. But with everything Shane was, a Lord, a wealthy man, a man with goals and ambitions that were good and kind, her family would strongly disapprove of her saying no.
But she would if Billy told her to. She would tell her family to sod off, she would run away with Billy, she would dedicate herself to him utterly and completely. She knew deep down he was the one she wanted more than anyone, or anything.
“Will,” she spoke as she approached, after all this time still calling him this. By now she knew what everyone else called him, Billy, or in formal cases William, but Ann liked to think of Will as her name for him. No one else’s. “I need to speak with you. It’s urgent.”
