Billy didn’t notice her masking her emotions, he just assumed she got over the worst parts of grief, but he still felt a sink in his chest when she said the photo was of her mom. He could sympathize, she was lucky to have a photo of her.
“I lost my mom too,” he admitted, his eyes looking down at the pumpkins in a lower tone than before. He was being serious. He didn’t like to dwell on the past, but he didn’t want to Mariana to feel alone on this. “A few years back. She more favored Saint Patrick’s Day and Christmas, but she enjoyed Halloween the same. But I think I would enjoy your mom’s company, she sounded like a character.” At the end of the reply, his lips curled into a smile.
Billy reached for his knife in its place on his belt, pulling it out and giving the handle part to her. “Here’s a knife to carve it. What were you thinking to carve for yours?” His tone was happier now, almost as if they weren’t admitting something important. He then decided to ask another question, “Do you celebrate Dia de Los Muertos?” The Spanish fell off his lips so easily. He was fluent in Spanish, learning it back home, but he didn’t show it off that much. Only when it was needed and if he wanted to show off.
Perhaps they had a lot more in common than she thought. Her smile softened out of empathy when he mentioned he lost his mother too. It was hard to lose a mother, no matter how much time has passed. But, of course, she internalized it, never letting it slip out through the cracks of her facade.
Mariana took his knife and sat on the table across from him. Dragging the pumpkin closest to her, her expression contorts as she hummed in thought. “ I ain’t sure yet. I haven’t done this in a while, actually. Might do somethin’ easy like a silhouette of a cat, or another generic pumpkin face. What about you? ” she beams a grin at him, and upon hearing his next question, she raised a brow. She didn’t expect him to say it so smoothly, so that earned him an acknowledged nod.
“Yessir, I do! Well, in my own way. That’s kinda why I got my mom’s photograph up there. If we get drinks later, I’ll probably add a bottle up there too. Just for her.”

“I thought surprising you would be the better option. Wouldn’t want to wait for days for a letter back.” He was one to enjoy surprises. Usually, he would pick up something for a friend of his and surprise them with it. It was his way of showing he cared about them. “I prefer to talk in person, honestly. Seeing you smile is worth the trip.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked around her hotel room. So she didn’t have her own house? Does she stay in here all year or shift rooms periodically?
His eyes scanned around the place. It was better than any other hotel room he’s stayed in, but it appeared like Saint Denis invested more money in their hotels looking nice than any other place. While he was looking around the room, his eyes landed on the photo and the flowers.
“Is that–” he stopped himself, not sure if he should ask it or not. He might offend her. He took a breather and decided to continue, it would sound too weird to change the subject.
“Is that someone important to you?” he pointed over at the portrait.
“ Oh, ” for once, she took a pause, her gaze immediately going towards the photograph atop the dresser. Mariana was so excited to see him she forgot about that. Her smile visibly fell, just for a moment. She caught herself of course, going back to autopilot -- the MASTER of MASKING EMOTIONS. Although, she probably hasn’t mastered it as well as she thought she was.
“ That’s my mom. She passed away when I was very young. It’s the only thing left I’ve got of her, and every year I put up a memorial for her. ” she said, so nonchalant and matter of fact. Of course, something uncomfortable stirred in her whenever she spoke of her mother. It happened VERY rarely -- tried to avoid the topic as much as possible -- but she felt it was safe to at least mention it to Billy.
Like a light switch, a smile returns to her face and she turns her full attention back to him.
“ I’m sure she’d yell at us for carvin’ the pumpkins instead of makin’ a pie out of it, or somethin’! ‘ Never waste your food ’, she said, but that ain’t gonna stop us from makin’ these Jack-o-Lanterns come to life! ” she snickers, slapping the top of one of the pumpkins.

( ( Billy the Kid; closed starter - to @pettysake ) ) sc
Billy never was one to be big in celebrating Halloween. Christmas, fourth of July, some Hispanic holidays (because usually his friends invited him along and there would be a dance held).
But when he spotted some pumpkins sitting out on the porch of a general store, he couldn’t help but think of Mariana. He didn’t know if she liked holidays, but it would be a nice gesture to give her a pumpkin nonetheless. As well as get one for himself to see how well he could carve.
He paid five dollars each for them, he didn’t feel like it was right to steal them, and made his way to Mariana.
Once he was able to find her, he knocked on her door. He knew he could’ve just walked in, but he didn’t want to scare Mariana and he wasn’t raised to be that way. Once the door was open, he started to talk.
“Figured you would like some pumpkins. I’m not sure if you’re one for holiday spirit, but I like to think they were a good investment,” he smiled at her. He had a feeling Mariana was busy a lot of the time, getting information, telling others the information she got for a price, and anything else she might do in her day. But, he felt like there was always time in the day to carve a pumpkin.
HALLOWEEN was one of those holidays that Mariana was born to love. Whether it was the atmosphere, the activities, ( or the occasional creepy crime that helps with her business ), or the aesthetics, it was the one holiday that she looked forward to the most. Also, Día de los Muertos was a special time for her and was often her only day off -- mostly because it was a way to remember her late mother. Although, that was something she kept to herself.
She was just done fixing up a small alter for her mother atop the dresser. A partially burnt photograph of her mother was propped up against her jewelry box, and beside it, a small candle and a couple stems of orange flowers she picked up earlier. Frankly, Mariana thought she was going to be spending her Halloween alone as usual. So when she heard the knock on her door, she was certainly surprised.
--PLEASANTLY surprised, however, because she was welcomed with pumpkins and a smiling Billy.
“ You kiddin’ me? I LOVE pumpkins! ” a beaming grin grew from cheek to cheek. “ Well then? Come on in, don’t be shy! ” she widened her door and motioned for him to enter her hotel room. Once inside, she gladly took the pumpkins from his hands and placed them on the small table beside the door. “ I didn’t know you were in town. Should’a told me! I would’ve gotten us some fine liquor to share. ”

I’ll let them know what bad means. “

His eyes lit up, a small smile on his face. He looked up at her, the smile remaining at what she said. He was glad that she was wondering where he was going and the next thing she said made it better. It made him feel better, even for a moment. He knew for sure she cared about him and wasn’t using him.
Always the optimist, he answered in a positive way. A promise he thought he could keep. He was too sure that they would cross paths with each other again, ignoring the fact that he might die before they would ever meet again. The noose was coming closer every day, having his name on it in full.
“Yes, I’m sure of it, Mar. Don’t worry about me, but know I’ll end up at your doorstep one day.” He let out a little light-hearted chuckle, patting her shoulder for a second. Ever the optimist.
The question of having her come with him kept appearing in his mind. It wasn’t something the young outlaw could ignore. He didn’t want to ask it, but another part of him desperately wanted to.
“I wouldn’t advise you to ever live a life like mine. I know you have done your share of bad deeds, but I have to warn you to be careful. Even though I like to think I’m a survivor, the lawmen are in the wrong and I’m a man trying to live my life as anyone.” He sucked in a breath, staring off before he continued, trying to think over what to say, “Just try not to get in too deep. Make sure you’ll be able to get out before anything bad happens. Being on the run is heavily romanticized, it’s nothing like how it’s portrayed in dime novels.”
Enough of his advice talk, he decided to end it, “I wouldn’t suggest for you to follow me. I don’t know how far you are in with this stuff, but if you think it might suit you better to stick with someone than being alone – it’s your choice. I’m probably going to head up East more. I don’t think heading West would do any good. If I do, it would probably be in one of the Northern States. For now, though, I’ll probably head to Strawberry and see where that takes me. I know I have to make some money before I go though.”
He wouldn’t mind if she followed him up there, but anything past that – he would be against. It was her choice if she did want to go with him. He didn’t want to say it outwardly for her to join him, even if riding with another person would be nice for a change. It just wouldn’t look good on his part.
It was tempting, to say the least. To just drop everything Mariana had going on for herself around these parts and start her business anew in a different place. Of course, none of that was foreign to her -- she’s always moving around, spreading her valuable words to those who seek it. However, said business was prized in Saint Denis; it was as close to HOME as she was going to get.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME, there’s such a thing as expanding one’s horizons. Strawberry wasn’t remotely as interesting and large as Saint Denis, but it was a small town in the mountains. People talk. People gossip. Competition reigns everywhere, and these small town people would surely want to bring their closest neighbor down somehow, if it meant gaining something. Little ol’ town of Strawberry -- not Mariana’s cup of tea, but perhaps she could tolerate it if it meant finding a particular taste in DIRT.
“ You don’t say, ” she snorted, commenting on his opinion on lawmen. They done nobody right, especially me. Anger and SPITE coated her thoughts. After hearing that these lawmen did Billy wrong too, she knew exactly what she wanted to do.
“ I’m goin’ with you. I ain’t lucky per se, but I’m a slippery fella’, and I know how to sweet talk my way through tough situations. ” a proud, cocky grin returned to her features. “ I’ll tell you what -- I’ll work my magic and help you find some work and get some quick cash. While I gather all I can about them lumberjacks and return to Saint Denis with a fat wad of cash when you’re all set to go. Killin’ two birds with one stone. Helpin’ out a buddy AND gettin’ some work done. Easy peasy! ”
Yet, truthfully, she didn’t want this adventure with him to end quite yet.

Billy noticed the change in the way she talked, more in a serious tone than before, and how she looked more at the floor than at him. She was being serious and it wasn’t some joke.
It wasn’t new to him, to hear this, it appeared like al of New Mexico wanted him dead. Mostly the townspeople didn’t, but there was some who wanted him to hang too. Mostly the citizens were on his side – the law system, not so much.
“It’s nothing new to me. I know about it already,” he spoke, simply, as if he didn’t care. He did care, but it was something he was used to hearing. He was surprised that she came here, all the way from Saint Denis, to tell him that and to help him out. He thought she just stuck by him in Saint Denis, feeling like it would let her gain something, but maybe he meant more to her than he thought. She wasn’t just using him as a partner in crime.
Billy didn’t want to have her join him, to pull her into his situation; even if she wasn’t a lawful person herself. If she wanted to and suggested it to him, he would maybe let her. To have her join him while he ran from law enforcement.
He assumed the people after him were the people from New Mexico, who wanted him dead in the first place. It had to be them, he hasn’t committed any crimes here that would get him a lot of attention. He made sure of it, have his crime be something that wouldn’t draw a lot of attention.
“I guess they found me here, too.” It was the reason he came out here in the first place. He sighed. He wasn’t one to be pessimistic, but he had to be realistic – he knew he couldn’t run all his life. He could try, but in the end, it might not be worth it. They would find him anyway. He wouldn’t give up, not now anyway. He would still try to have luck on his side and make a life for himself. Even if he gained a lot of publicity from his last jail attempt. He was too stubborn to quit so quickly.
“What were you thinking?” he asked her, looking at her. He didn’t have much to bring with him, he could easily move if that was the plan. He didn’t put much of his stuff in the house since he assumed he would only be here for a few days. Billy didn’t ask her why exactly she cared, why she made such a journey and go out of her way for a guy she met in the city. It would be rude of him and he felt like she might not want to answer it.
He then decided to speak again, adding another thing.
“I appreciate it, y’know– You helpin’ me and all.”
Usually, there was no problem detaching herself from people -- least of all, MEN. She was pretty good at it too, a master of her own craft. Everyone was her pawn, and the city was her chessboard. But for SOME REASON, she felt a sort of attachment towards Billy, and she hadn’t had one of those in a long time. Perhaps, in a way, he reminded her of someone she knew way before. That he reminded her of a time when things were far simpler and with less heartache. A time before she became this vengeful, selfish shell of a person.
And as Mariana realized she traveled all this way just for him ( nevermind stealing someone’s horse along the way ), she discovered that maybe she finally found a friend. A GENUINE friend. And in the end, she does care about him, despite their short time together.
Her mind boggles at the idea -- no, at the FACT that she still has the capacity to care for ANYONE. It was enough to get her drowning in her own thoughts; the room and the sounds blurring in the background. She just barely caught what he said, and a heavy weight anchored deep in her chest.
“ I -- - ” Mariana looked up at him, but as soon as she realized how pathetic that might’ve looked and sounded, she reverted back to her usual poise. Donning and steeling the facade she kept up with for years. “ Where will you go next? Y’think we’d ever meet again? ”

There was always a price.
Sean couldn’t blame her, people had to make their money somehow. he was sure Hosea was one once since he was a talker and the brains on operations. Someone probably paid him for information once. Sean would if he could find anything really juicy about a location.
“Anything, really, could I get a discount if I pay for a drink for ya’?” Sean usually wasn’t a cheapskate, but at the moment he barely had any money on him at the moment. He decided to explain more, “My crew and I just moved in the area. Looking for anything I can find,” he leaned in with a small smirk on the Irishman’s face, “but what I’m really lookin’ for is some good leads. Either a stagecoach or anythin’ leading to a good payroll. Maybe give me somethin’ about the family feud, if they have anythin’ worth taking.”
“Do ya’ have anythin’ for me that’s good?”
Ah, a newbie. One of her favorites. Most of her clients are strangers with a one-time deal, but there are some regulars that religiously go to her as a primary source of information. It was a symbiotic relationship really; an exchange of information worth hundreds upon hundreds of dollars, when it came down to it. So with new faces -- especially the eager ones with ulterior motives -- Mariana is a tad more friendly.
He could be an INVESTMENT, for all she knew.
“ For a drink? I could give you a discount. ” she said, leaning back into her chair. A devious and conniving smirk widens on her painted lips. “ The family feud is truly somethin’ else, I tell ya. Get me a whiskey and five bucks, and I’ll give ya everything you need t’know. ”

For all her sins, Joanna was usually more uncomfortable about dealing with death and killing. She didn’t look forward to the day she might have to take someone’s life. She was uncomfortable with the fact this guy had died, but he wasn’t someone who many people would be sad to see gone. She wanted to know more about this woman and also didn’t want to risk getting herself shot by her to cover up her tracks.
“I suppose. He wasn’t going to be mayor or an upstanding citizen anytime soon” Joanna replied.
Joanna had helped get rid of one body before, someone one of the men she’d been with had killed to protect her. She’d freaked out more over that one.
“It’s not something I like to do. But I have done before” she said, handing the other woman some rope once they’d lifted him up onto the horse. It took quite an effort for even the two of them to pull it off. “You aren’t planning to go and shoot up the town, are you? I might have a problem with that.”
A maniacal laugh escapes her lips; it was loud enough to echo through the surrounding trees. Mariana was crazy, sure, but she saved the best for those who truly deserved it. Those who directly and indirectly ruined her to the monstrous MESS she’d become.
“ ‘Course not! I ain’t THAT off the rails. Just had business with this fella’ here. The town got nothin’ against me -- not yet, anyway. ” she said, snickering to herself as she took the rope and securely tied the body to her horse. This process was a lot harder than she thought, and perhaps with some prior thinking and planning, this might have went a lot smoother too. Usually, she would just do the deed, cover her tracks, and leave the body AND the scene immediately.
But, then again, things never really go according to plan with Mariana.
She hopped onto her horse, rubbing off the remaining blood on her hands onto her black pants. “ SO -- know any good places ‘round here to dump a body? ”
