Living back here is a temporary thing for Nancy, if also something like eternal.
Karen Wheeler is a complicated woman in the sense that Nancy’s bedroom is simultaneously unchanged from her youth and completely brand new. Like she started to paint over the place where her eldest daughter grew up and fell apart for the first time and then had second thoughts and never quite finished the job.
There are trinkets strewn about— an old ballerina music box she was given when she was seven and an empty earring tree just waiting to be put to use again— but the old bedspread is gone and there are little tiny pinholes in the drywall where she used to hang photos with thumbtacks even though it made her mother crazy.
It’s never made sense to Nancy, why her mother left those open and visible, when she already had to patch up the spot near the floorboards where Nancy’s boot went kicking when she was seventeen years old.
She already had the tools out for patching and repairing. Covering up.
Nancy isn’t sure why she’s never finished the job.
