Nevertheless She Persisted - Countdown to Wonder Woman: Days 19&20

Gonna do just 20 days of Wonder Woman-themed posts for the wonder women in my life, including my daughter, dandelion-witch, and for Shea MacLeod. (Somehow my days got off, so we’re doing a double day today because it comes out today!)

People always said selling a female superhero character in comics would be difficult at best.

Nevertheless she persisted.

She was given a short-lived television show in the 1970s, but it was cancelled after only 3 seasons.

According to Wikipedia, in 2016, Sensation Comics featured Wonder Woman officiating a same-sex wedding (Issue #48). "My country is all women. To us, it's not 'gay' marriage. It's just marriage", she states to Superman. Wonder Woman's advocacy for gay rights was taken a step further when comic book writer Greg Rucka announced that she is canonically bisexual, according to her rebooted Rebirth origin. This follows the way Wonder Woman was written in the alternate continuity or non-canon Earth One by Grant Morrison, and fellow Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone staunchly supported Rucka's statement. Rucka responded to "haters" that consensual sex with women is just as important to Wonder Woman as the Truth is to Superman, surprised at the amount of backlash from her fanbase.

For years, Hollywood has resisted the idea of giving her a film of her own, anticipating that it would not be well-received.

Her film opens today, starring Israeli actress Gal Gadot. Personally, I hope it blows the box office records for superhero movies off the table. And I hope it’s as good as it looks. I feel like it’s more important than just another superhero film, and the deeper implications should make women want to support it.

Gonna do just 20 days of Wonder Woman-themed posts for the wonder women in my life, including my daughter, and for Shea MacLeod. Hey, DC! This is how you get more readers for Wonder Woman. The film is gonna give the Amazon Princess a much-needed and long-overdue shot-in-the-arm, but if they just made this her regular outfit, she looks so badass who could resist? Bombshell Wonder Woman should BE Wonder Woman.
