p!ay hair lounge SHOOT!
Recently, myself and the incredibly driven stylists from p!ay hair lounge, gathered together for a shoot. We transformed five clients into models for the day. Hair cuts & color were accomplished in the days before. I snapped the shots, after Sam, Jena, Aly & Allison created strong hair + make-up looks on each model. Jessica helped with odds & ends while Todd (my boyfriend) filmed us in action. It was an amazing day! I challenged each stylist on set, to be sure I was capturing their best work. Take a look!
Towards the end of the shoot, Jena & Allison created second looks on Justine & Kaitlin:
Jena combined Bumble and bumble Styling Wax with white face powder to make this hair paint!
Aly makes up Stephanie.

Blonde Makeover
Don't hate me because I'm in California in February with 70/80 degree temperatures. It is PERFECT weather & I am influenced by it and desiring to brighten every head of hair that walks through the door at p!ay hair lounge.
My relationship with makeover subject, Taylor, dates back 6 years when I approached her & her mom at a greasy spoon restaurant asking if I could do her hair. At 11 years old, she was too young to model, but told them that I would love to shoot her in a few years and started cutting her and her mom's hair. I have done a handful of shoots with her over the years. Each one unique, but none as terrific as this coming of age makeover and shoot.
Taylor asked me a few weeks back what I could do to make her more "edgy" now that she is 17. With a budding modeling career I chose to save her from 1/2 & 1/2 "bro-hoe" hair color & felt brightening her blonde would make her more marketable and look fanfrickentastic! She loved the idea and was in my chair before we knew it! (How to steps below video)
Enjoy our adventure in 1 minute!-
Directions for this classic waved hairstyle:
1. Dry hair completely using a product such as Bumble & bumble Styling Lotion
2. Take 1.5" x 3"x hair's length sections and spritz with Bb. Spray de Mode to protect from heat & give a flexible brushable hold.
3. Wrap each section around the iron horizontally on the head.
4. Pin each section tightly to cool once you slide it off the 19mm Enzo Milano Classic clipless iron.
5. Once all hair has been set and cooled, remove pins.
6. Brush all hair thoroughly with a flat paddle brush.
7. Use a comb to coax hair into wave formation.
Are you bright enough? :) Brig

Gray Hair Makeover
Lets be real! I can find a bazillion makeovers on women under 25, but over that age it becomes more challenging. I vow to help change that starting today! My favorite type of client is the woman who is looking to modernize her hair. I pride myself in an honest opinion, but also listening to a clients needs and wants. I am never short on ideas and love giving my professional suggestions.. Meet Mrs. Strandstra....
Claudia BEFORE
2nd grade teacher aka Claudia, sat in my chair for the first time at p!ay hair lounge in Simi Valley,CA. a week ago for a cut. After we decided on a length, she asked me what I thought of her color. It had been over a year since she had been colored. I shared this with her: I always hear women trying to justify letting their hair go gray by the mature gray haired models in the JC Penney catalog. They tell me how beautiful the model's gray hair is. I think:
They are models, so already they are better looking than 99.9 % of the population.
How much better would they look with some color.
(**In an attempt to link to one of their catalogs featuring "gray haired models" I made a STARK discovery....the models being used in the JC Penney Catalog are mature women WITHOUT gray hair. Their hair is colored. The gray haired models rarely exist in clothing catalogs anymore.)
My explanation always leads to the question:
"What would you do with my color?"
It of course did with Claudia. I was stunned to discover she was only 53. Her gray was AGING her.
Yes, I AM wearing a flight suit!
I suggested integrating a buttery blonde and a light golden brown in with her gray. I felt the obvious step would be to completely cover it, but I wanted to give Claudia something with dimension that would require 6-8 week color visits instead of 3-4 weeks which a solid color would. She was into the idea and scheduled her color appointment with me for a week later.
At the end of her haircut appointment I brought out her natural texture using a diffuser and Bumble & bumble Curl Conscious products. I showed her how to make her style look polished by adding a few "iron" curls on the surface.
When she arrived for her color makeover yesterday, I asked her to come in with her hair blown out so I could show how she used to wear her hair daily prior to a week ago.
Claudia AFTER
Now she is digging her hair's natural curl and is WORKING IT!
Claudia e-mailed me this morning to let me know how her makeover is going over with her and her husband..
I passed the litmus test when I got home after my color change.....my husband liked it!. But you know, of course, the litmus test that matters is MINE! Well, I kept checking myself out in the kitchen window while I was cooking dinner last night-- AND I LIKED WHAT I SAW. The grey is gone, but not "big obvious" gone, "It looks so natural,Brig"--Yowzah :)
I was pretty before, but now I feel like- DON'T I LOOK GREAT? Feel my hair! Thanks, Brig!

Grow Out Your Hair
Jessica Krewson, Owner of designKREW
At one time or another, all of us women have wanted to grow our hair long. Meet Jessica Krewson, owner of designKREW, my client & long haired friend. Her hair used to be above her shoulders and together we grew it long and healthy. On her last visit to p!ay hair lounge we were reminiscing about the journey of her hair and how it went from short to long. Her hair is striking! We got to talking not only about what part I, as her hairstylist, had in that but also her role. We realized this was information that others would find useful. I hope you do.
Before I was a stylist, I always read the advice to get regular trims and my hair would grow faster. I never understood this logic. If it keeps getting cut, won't it get shorter.I now know this advice is true.
Let me explain it easily:
Hair grows on average of 1/2 inch every four weeks. Not fast if you are wanting it a foot longer. You can help encourage quicker growth by being sure you have a balanced diet, taking a multi-vitamin & using quality professional products to maintain its health.
Hair that is not regularly trimmed, splits on its ends. When these ends are not cut off in a timely manner, they split higher up the hair shaft breaking off somewhere in the middle. Enough of this cycle and you will notice the overall thickness of the bottom perimeter of your hair starts to look see thru. Or worse, starts to form the dreaded V and actually gets shorter.
Follow these steps to long locks:
Be sure your hairstylist understands that you want to grow your hair long.
Listen to your hairstylist. You might need to cut off some length to rid your hair of unhealthy ends in order for it to grow longer at the beginning of this venture.
Go for regular trims approx every 10 weeks to eliminate any new splits. These trims should only be about 1/4" off the ends.
Take care of your hair at home by using quality products such as Bumble & bumble to add plenty of moisture and prevent heat styling damage.
Be realistic and know it will take patience, but hair does grow.
Have a goal length in mind, but if as it grows it doesn't look right on you, abandon the plan and try something different.
