NEW YORK - The Journals of Adam & Eve: The World’s First Love StoryYou know the story of Genesis Chapter 2: God makes man and gives him a woman who befriends a snake. The man and woman eat a forbidden apple, and God exiles them from paradise. Voila! You have the makings of the new hysterically funny two-character comedy The Journals of Adam & Eve: The World’s First Love Story, written by Ed. Weinberger and starring Hal Linden (Adam) and Marilu Henner (Eve).Satirical ClichesFrom Adam’s opening dialogue, when he is alone in the world without a partner, to his introduction to Eve and until the very last line of the comedy, the audience was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, except when Linden and Henner delivered their satirical cliches and comical verbal abuses and then laughter was deafening. You can’t deny the sound of praise for two well-seasoned, award-winning actors sharing their gifts with everyone in the theater. Courtesy sheencenter.orgLegendary CoupleThe Journals of Adam and Eve, an adaptation of Mark Twain’s short story Eve’s Diary, can best be described by the press release quote:This adaptation “will, for the first time in their own words, tell the true story of the legendary couple–the world’s first love story. It chronicles from Eden to exile…”Hal Linden delivers an unforgettable performance as Adam, fascinated by his appendages and bodily fluids and overwhelmed by his duties to name every creature, plant, and fruit he sees.“My first banana almost choked me to death,” Adam quipped, unaware he was supposed to peel the fruit. Even more impressive is when Eve shows up on the lonely planet. Hal Linden. Courtesy hallinden.netMerrimentMarilu Henner as Eve was spunky as she slinked on stage, strutting her newfound Garden of Eden body like a proud peacock, and dished the digs right back to Adam without a hitch. The writing captivates with its cleverness and engagement: the original Genesis 2 was misogynistic, not with violence towards women but more a look at the inferiority of women. Some of Adam’s lines would be demeaning to women today. Still, Weinberger cleverly turned the story into a humorous look back at the marital dialogue and interaction between partners that existed for eons. There was no offense, just merriment.Barney MillerTony Danza, Carol Kane, and Judd Hirsch were in the audience, supporting Henner. They co-starred in Taxi with Henner, and many will remember Hirsch starring along with Linden in Barney Miller. There’s no better testament than having your fellow thespians support you on opening night. The Journals of Adam & Eve is a limited engagement now through July 28. Go and enjoy this magnificent and lighthearted version of creation, temptation, love, and marriage. It will put a smile on your face. “If you can’t laugh, why live?” Marilu Henner. When I am inside writing, all I can think about is how I should be outside living.
When I am outside living, all I can do is notice all there is to write about.
When I read about love, I think I should be out loving. When I love, I think I need to read more.
I am stumbling in pursuit of grace, I hunt patience with a vengeance.
On the mornings when my brother’s tired muscles held to the pillow, my father used to tell him,
For every moment you aren’t playing basketball, someone else is on the court practicing.
I spend most of my time wondering if I should be somewhere else.
So I have learned to shape the words thank you with my first breath each morning, my last breath every night.
When the last breath comes, at least I will know I was thankful for all the places I was so sure I was not supposed to be.
All those places I made it to, all the loves I held, all the words I wrote.
And even if it is just for one moment, I will be exactly where I am supposed to be.
