I feel you might have some reservations but hear me out… Platinumgames Sonic game.

Not as many reservations as you’d expect. I mean, the reservations I’d have is that for a time, the entire internet was on this kick of “let Platinum Games do it” for literally every game franchise. And then they did those Korra, Transformers, and Ninja Turtles games and people kind of stopped saying that.

People also flip flop a lot on Nier Automata. I still haven’t played it, but the general consensus seems to be “it’s way better than Nier Replicant, but it’s not your usual Platinum Game.”

I think Platinum has strengths and weaknesses, and I think their weaknesses look more pronounced when they aren’t in full control of something. Korra, Transformers and Ninja Turtles were all with Activision, for instance, and those games were a paycheck for Platinum. It was to keep the lights on.

They also probably weren’t paid enough for them; my understanding is that Korra was this tiny little project for them, real shoestring budget sort of thing, and Activision sold it cheaply because it wasn’t meant to be a big thing. But I assume it sold beyond expectations, because it seemed like Transformers and Ninja Turtles were similarly low-budget games... but they were sold at full price.

Transformers sounded like it was okay but Ninja Turtles wasn’t what most wanted from a Platinum TMNT game.

The same goes for Nier, right. Platinum was there, they had input, but it was ultimately Yoko Taro’s game, and sometimes that means making the gameplay a certain way on purpose. Not because it’s fun or exciting, but because he wants to convey a feeling. Which means that, sometimes, it feels bad on purpose.

And then there was Star Fox Zero, which...

And who knows. Maybe that would put Platinum in the same boat with Sonic. There would be brand restrictions and “please don’t make Sonic do that.”

But more to your point, there’s a scene early on in the Metal Gear Rising prologue level where Jack has to chase Sundowner, who has kidnapped the african president. Sundowner has hopped on to a train that’s speeding away, and Jack, being a cyborg, catches up on foot.

And there’s this scene where Jack is running full tilt and he skids around this corner by planting his arm in the pavement.

And it was in that moment I had a thought...

“Maybe Platinum could make a Sonic game.”

And when you think about it, the people who have worked at Platinum over the years, the games they worked on have moods that I would want to see in a Sonic game. Dante and Bayonetta’s “I’m just having fun at the end of the world” vibes, Viewtiful Joe, Wonderful 101...

There’s a tone of voice in those games that would fit Sonic like a glove. But I suppose it would be on Sega to let them off the leash enough to accomplish it.

But yeah, the idea of Platinum doing a Sonic game is not without merit.
