Belarusian journalist Pavlo Sheremet was killed early this morning (20/July/16) by a car bomb in the Ukrainian capital. He was an outspoken opponent of Belarusian dictator Lukashenko and opposed to Russian occupation of Crimea.

Let’s all hope that the guilty will come to justice soon, and hope for the safety of his family and fellow journalists. I wish for a world in which journalists like Sheremet do not fear for their lives.

Now is time to express our deepest sympathy for his family and friends, and our deepest gratitude to him for sacrificing all for the sake of his beliefs. As Crimean political prisoner Oleh Sentsov said, “I don’t know what you’re convictions are worth if you are not ready to suffer for them or even to die.” Words cannot express the gratitude which I have towards the brave individuals such as Sheremet, who paid the ultimate price for the sake of the truth.
