Sherenna's School Day

When Sherenna learned she would be helping one of her sister’s friends prepare for university—specifically for a teaching degree—she assumed it would be one of her less demeaning tasks.

However, instead of helping with academic work, she found herself presented with a modified version of her own old school uniform. She was to become the would-be teacher’s “student” for the day.

At 34 years old Sherenna found herself back wearing black tights, clunky shoes, a pleated grey skirt, and a buttoned blouse with a cardigan. This made her feel awful—like she’d been demoted in status. Worse yet, she was forced to sit at her desk in silence, completing nothing more than coloring pages and dot-to-dot puzzles. The entire day felt like a humiliating regression and while she couldn't protest she knew full well she was being silently laughed at. The thought of being seen like this by anyone else made her stomach churn.

Sherenna's Clothing Exchange

“Out with the old and in with the new!” Amy, Sherenna’s sister, laughed cheerfully, carrying out the 'one in one out' policy rule.

Every time a new piece of clothing was found or bought, it was promptly forced upon Sherenna, replacing an item from her existing wardrobe. These discarded items were either donated to charity or sold to bring in a little extra money for the family.

Sherenna stood disheartened, nervously fiddling with the outdated, ill-fitting skirt of her newly acquired dress, donated this time by a former friend. Her dismay deepened as Amy plucked an elegant peach dress—one of Sherenna’s favorites—from the wardrobe and placed it in the charity shop bag.

Month by month, Sherenna’s wardrobe shifted from modern, elegant, and stylish to a mismatched collection of cheap, old-fashioned, and childish garments. Eventually, it seemed, Sherenna would have nothing left to wear that made her feel beautiful or confident.

Sherenna's Princess Party

"Do you like the Snow White outfit we chose for you?" Gabby smirked as she stood beside Sherenna with her friend.

"It's your friends daughters princess party, I wonder how she will like you after you turn up like this?" grinned Stacey.

Sherenna's 'friends' stood beside her looking like authentic classy princesses and yet they had made her look like a cheap trashy knock off. Sherenna's cheeks burned at the thought of walking into the party with them dressed like this.

Sherenna Bringing down the Neighbourhood

Another day and another game for Sherenna's 'friends'

Shopping was first and after a trip to the clothing department an outfit was chosen. It was everything Sherenna hated but of course she had no choice.

After walking to a posh neighbourhood Sherenna was instructed to stand on the street corner and just wait.

Sophie, Claire and Jennifer sit on the bench nearby to watch the game unfold. They wanted to see how long Sherenna might last until the police were called. They giggled with each other, pretending not to know Sherenna as they watched disgusted faces peer out of the nearby windows. A man stops and pulls out his phone, it looks like the game will end sooner rather than later.

Sherenna's Text Service

Sherenna was on her way out to meet a few potential friends for drinks—friends she worked hard to keep in the dark about her life predicament. Hoping for a rare, pleasant evening out, the all-too-familiar chime of her husband’s text message interrupted her thoughts.

“Apples Cafe: 6pm - 8pm: Cleaning,” the text read. Sherenna’s heart sank. She knew she had no choice but to report. By now, Jasmine, the worker at the cafe, would have already transferred the £10 fee to her husband.

The arrangement was simple: £10 for any job. For Jasmine, it was an easy decision. Sit on her phone for two hours while Sherenna did the work, and Jasmine still made £20—£30 paid, £10 passed on. And as always, Sherenna got nothing.

Sherenna fumbled with the bowl of water and rags, the edges of her dress catching dirty food from the tables she wiped down. She dreaded the thought of canceling her evening plans but knew her appearance was a problem. Could she show up in a stained dress and disheveled state, praying no one noticed? Or would tonight be just another plan she had to sacrifice?

Sherenna's New Hobby

Jamie, Alison, and Emma were old school friends of Sherenna’s back in the day—all three had attended ballet classes regularly.

Because ballet was one of Sherenna’s many new hobbies, handpicked by her husband, he thought it would be fun to invite a few of her former friends over for a demonstration.

Sherenna was to show them the five basic ballet positions, and they decided to bring along her old high school crush. The deal was simple: if she performed adequately, the only embarrassment would be dancing in front of her friends. But if she fell three times, she’d have to practice for an hour each day for a full week after work. The marbles scattered on the floor added an extra layer of difficulty—and extra incentive for them to watch her fail.

Her former friends smirked and giggled as Sherenna struggled to perform something they themselves had mastered by the age of seven. Their laughter grew even louder when she stepped on another marble and fell for the second time. None of them felt the slightest bit of sympathy for her—why would they, when this whole ordeal seemed so ridiculous?

With one last attempt to go, Sherenna couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d be wearing her ballet dress a lot more often this week.

Sherenna's Office Coffee Day

Sherenna knew she was expected to do anything anyone in the office asked of her these days, but she couldn’t understand why she was being singled out so relentlessly today.

All morning, the entire office had been snapping their fingers and ordering her to bring them coffee. This was the fourth cup for Olivia, the 21-year-old intern. As Sherenna poured the coffee, she felt a growing sense of dread, knowing she was falling further and further behind in her own work.

Unbeknownst to Sherenna, her sister had used chalk to write a few choice words on the back of her skirt the night before, while it hung ready for the morning. Amy was thrilled to see Sherenna hurriedly pull the skirt on without noticing. Sherenna would go about her day, completely unaware of her sister’s mischief, until she undressed later that evening at home.

Sherennas Karaoke

Forced to dress in the most childish princess dress they could find, Sherenna was pushed and forced into setting herself up for complete humiliation at the bar.

A plastic tiara and jewellery was chosen to go with her ridiculous Elsa dress, even her hair was made into a Elsa plait. Not being able to sing a single note, Sherenna stands ready to sing the song chosen for her at the local karaoke, she can already hear the tittering and chattering around the bar before she even begins.

She has to pretend that she's serious and finish the whole song, otherwise, another song will follow. There was a long night ahead of Sherenna, who knew - at best - that the rest of the night would be spent sitting at the bar in her oversised Elsa dress.
