A shout out to THRASHIN’ (the film) An experience that made my youth so amazing. At 8 years old This was a movie that changed my life. As a lone kid growing up on a farm the characters in this movie were so exotic and foreign to me that I was captivated. I wanted to embody every part of this movie. I wanted to become a bad ass skater. I wanted to simultaneously be Corey Webster and Hook. I wanted a girlfriend like Chrissy and a girl like Violet. I wanted to have a party house with spray paint on the walls like the Daggers place and I wanted a skate ramp out back like the ramp locals. But most of all the life lessons Corey Webster experienced in the film set up a paradigm for the rites of passage I was so eager to experience. Not all that surprisingly, I wanted to model myself and many of my choices after Corey. He was noble and reserved. He had manners and candor. He was awesome at being him but not arrogant because of it. Cool with his friends and clearly a ladies man. All while being stone cold confident. These were the traits our mothers wanted us to have and he embodied them alongside all of the amazing stuff every kid wanted to do as well. I know @joshbrolin and Pamela Gidley and sherilynn Fenn were actors in a fictional story, But this movie that I watched hundreds of times through the years was more than a movie. It was an experience. It IS a memory. These characters are forever imprinted in my mind by the amazing creation their contribution created. Maybe I’m just sentimental but I know we all have movies that are just as important as real life memories in so many ways and This movie changed me. As I grew it was in the back of my mind and helped me to try and fail, adapt, and overcome and stay true to myself. It ultimately played some part in how I became the man I am today.
