If this was a #Straturday afternoon precisely 30 years ago, and you happened to be wandering down the cobbled streets of Old Montreal feeling a bit thirsty, with no particular place to go, you would have heard the 110 decibel din of a live band booming out of 22 rue St. Paul Est. And if your curiosity (and thirst) got the better of you, and you were coaxed inside to see why there were the sounds of music and a party coming out of this little place at 2 pm on a summer Saturday afternoon, THIS is the rig the long-haired, shabbily-clad, guitar player (who was causing precisely 45% of the aforementioned din) would have been playing. Passing

I live on a road where people drive

faster than they should,

always putting up more streetlights,

tearing down all the woods.

It used to be a two-lane,

but it’s since grown into four,

the neighbors used to wave hello,

and nobody locked their doors.

A couple a blocks away there was

an old man’s burned out barn,

the roof gave way in the summer;

he moved away and sold the farm.

We used to sneak inside and sift

through things he left behind,

tools and wood and a rusty tractor,

you never knew what you’d find.

We’d go for a drive in the country,

it was only an hour away,

but now, it’s nothing but condos,

and the farms have gone away.

Now you’ve got to keep driving,

and before you blink an eye,

you’ve made it to the next city,

where country folk go to die.
