what do you MEAN these hundred year old wind and water gods are worshipped as husband and wife?? what do you MEAN that shi wudu loved his brother so much SO MUCH that he ran away with him after their parents died, unable to leave him in that house to who knows what fate, that he started working and training so hard so that he could ascend and try to save his brother from suffering a fate worse than death? AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN that, when it didn't work, he bent the laws of nature to grant his brother immortality, and spent centuries covering him in protective charms and rare treasures to increase his powers?? becoming the second most powerful god in heaven, god of wealth, wearing the moniker water tyrant with pride, yes because he loved power but all so there would be no one to trample him (and his brother)??

AND STILL - when it wasnt enough, when it came time to pay the price for his sins, he did everything he could to save qingxuan, yes you can trample me, yes you can humiliate me, i'll prostrate before the family you lost because of me, kiss the dirt and die, but don't touch my brother, leave him alone, he has nothing to do with what I chose to do to save him -

he xuan is actually responsible for the folktale that the water and wind masters are husband and wife. shi qingxuan was already thought to be shi wudu's adopted little sister before the water master's ascension. according to legend, shi qingxuan took on a male form as a youth to 'stay pure' for shi wudu until her ascension and their subsequent marriage. shi qingxuan is technically still his 'adopted' sister but their relationship is reinterpreted as childhood sweethearts and the marriage is understood as a gesture to make her 'officially' part of the family .

shi qingxuan HATES myth. not only is it an absurd fabrication of true events but the whole thing is just... creepy. as soon as it gets traction, she starts appearing in her followers dreams, admitting to dispel it.

shi wudu, however... appears in those same followers' dreams the night after to discredit shi qingxuan's message. literally, like "ignore that last dream from my wife, she's mad at me atm and extremely hysterical. keep worshipping us as husband and wife. in fact, you better host a lavish wedding ceremony in the mortal realm on our 'anniversary' every year or i'll capsize your ships."

he xuan is, at first, very confused as to why shi wudu seemingly doesn't give a fuck about the myths. then, a month after the anniversary of the wind master's ascension, the wind and water temples across the mortal realm put on grand celebrations, 're-enacting' the marriage of the wind and water gods. the celebrations draw in an ABSURD number of new followers and merits, especially from newlyweds praying for a prosperous marriage.

shi wudu is extremely smug and reaches new heights of tyranny. shi qingxuan is pissed but uses the crazy influx of merits to host a weeklong banquet and gets wasted to the point that she no longer gives a shit. he xuan is probably the most upset about how things turned out (and thoroughly disgusted at the lengths shi wudu would go for some coin). he sighs, goes to shi qingxuan's banquet and gorges himself on the buffet spread
