✗ Melinda May || FC: Ming-Na Wen || OPEN
→ “Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish friend from foe.”
The daughter of an intelligence operative, Melinda joined S.H.I.E.L.D. believing it to be the best in national and international security. She was trained by the best the organization had to offer, becoming a talented pilot and weapons expert. Her years of experience and loyalty gained her a Level 7 S.H.I.E.L.D. clearance until a “Welcome Wagon” (Index Asset Evaluation and Intake) mission in Manama, Bahrain went south. Eva Belyakov - the individual reported to have advanced powers - took a young civilian girl and every dispatched S.H.I.E.L.D. agent aside from herself and Phil Coulson and - aided by Bahrainian gangsters seemingly under her control - hoarded them inside a warehouse. Unable to call for backup, May went in with only a knife, crossing off each mind-controlled attacker and Belyakov herself. In the wake of the woman’s death, she learned that the child - Katya, revealed to be Belyakov’s daughter - was the one controlling people using a sensory manipulating ability. Witnessing the girl use her powers to kill the remaining gangsters without so much as a touch, May was forced to kill Katya before the same fate befell the agents she’d taken control of as well.
The incident, of which she never spoke of after, earned her the nickname “The Cavalry” (a title she despises to this day), but while the majority of her peers saw her actions as praiseworthy, May left the warehouse scarred. Her warm, rule-skirting personality faded. Her marriage to S.H.I.E..L.D. neurologist Dr. Andrew Garner began to fall apart. Not long after, May withdrew from combat entirely, accepting anadministrative job within S.H.I.E.L.D.’s bureaucracy.
After the battle of New York, May was called into duty by Director Nick Fury, ordering her as his eyes and ears on the newly resurrected Phil Coulson. His instructions (one of his last as Director before Norman Osborn’s takeover) for her to report to him directly if Coulson showed any side-effects or dangerous behavior after his treatment with the alien GH.325 drug. Fury believed that given their shared history, Coulson would recruit her for his new team. To aid in her mission, she put together a team of agents that may be necessary to treat or act on Coulson. Coulson was then given specific mission parameters and was maneuvered into picking May’s choices.
Though initially a machination of her directives from Fury, May’s bond with her team has grown strong over the years. An accomplished pilot, she is generally in charge of operating the Bus, as well as acting as Mission Commander. Fiercely protective of her teammates, May will go above and beyond to ensure their safety and protect the public in the process.
Over the years, May and her teammates have faced many threats and oddities, their missions primarily dealing with enhanced individuals. Their most recent work with Inhumans has become complicated due to the passing of The Accords.
