Go reminisces on the circumstances that have led him here and who he has become as a man.
Tags: Shijima Go x Chase, mostly fluff a little sprinkle of sad, Go is nervous about change, takes place around 2023.
Afternoon sun bled through the window beside his computer set up and he took the time to watch the life beyond the glass. It'd been a hectic few weeks. He wasn't sure when he'd gotten a moment to breathe. But with Chase at work, the dog being walked by Eiji and Kiriko, it was quiet in the apartment. He had a moment to himself.
Go could reflect on the last few years. So much had changed. Absently, he toyed with the bottle of medication on his desk. He shook it back and forth as a stim as he watched a couple kiss on the bench at the bus stop across the road.
He smiled. It reminded him of Reiko. He'd been so dumb back then. Go looked back at his computer, where he left off on the latest task of his pile of tasks. He was reminded of why life had become so hectic recently in the first place.
Go sank in his chair.
He never really thought he was the marrying type, it was never really the kind of life he saw for himself. But here he was, staring at the wedding invites on his computer wondering if he should change the font, reminiscing on the past. It was almost ridiculous, Go thought to himself, how much had changed. About him, about his relationships, his outlooks.
Was it a curse or a blessing, he still wasn't sure. His therapist told him that was normal, being unsure. He wasn't getting cold feet, he didn't think. He was just flabbergasted that this was a possibility at all. Not that it was a real marriage, two men, roidmude or not, couldn't actually get married. But the symbolism is what mattered, Kiriko insisted on that. But it was real to him, and that, Go continued to be unable to fathom.
Go had lied to himself for so long. About himself, about Chase. He set the pill bottle down on the desk, sliding it back into its spot beside his trinkets. He used a mask of freedom to hide how trapped he really was. Chase would be proud he'd actually read that stupid self help book the roidmude bought, with his first real pay cheque, no less.
He navigated the computer app, changing the font for what felt like the tenth time. They had to send these next week but he still didn't feel like they were right. Go sighed, he felt so indecisive. There were times he felt sort of useless without Chase, as embarrassing as it was even to just admit to himself. He pushed his keyboard forward and laid his head on the desk.
He was twenty seven, he didn't need his fiance, ehe fiance, to walk him through fonts. Go had gotten less independent now that Chase was back, he realised. It was both a bad and a good thing, something about hyper individuality being bad or whatever. He was half asleep during that session. He lifted his head just enough to look at the screen again.
Definitely not this font, he decided before lowering his head back down to the desk. Go had a lot of feelings about getting married, he let his mind drift back to that. Being forever, sort of, tied to somebody else was scary. He wasn't sure he deserved that sort of kindness though, to be loved unconditionally like that.
He scoffed, he and Chase had been together for years now, four. Go knew these fears were unfounded, a product of a mind that didn't quite think right. He hated being self aware, it made these thoughts more difficult to manage in a way. What was he supposed to do? Call himself stupid and go on with his day? No, he was never like that.
Go still had moments where he couldn't believe Chase wanted him. After everything he had done to the roidmude, and all the other roidmudes. No matter how many times he's reassured he has atoned for his sins, Go thinks he's deserving of more punishment. The man sighed, closing his eyes and nuzzling his face into his arm.
Bringing the four back would never feel like enough for how he treated Chase. The kindest, gentlest soul he'd ever met. Go was lucky, incredibly so. Chase loved him for him. That was more than enough for him, it was more than he could ask for. And he was back to square one, wishing Chase was here to help with the font.
"You look handsome, Go."
Chase had let those words slip about a dozen times so far, it was endearing, like he was entranced. Go's nervous expression softened. "Do you remember the steps to our dance?" And the photographer nearly rolled his eyes out of his skull.
"I was paying attention."
"I was merely asking," Chase's hand came up to clasp his, his other hand coming up to Go's shoulder. "Our first dance as a married couple, this is exciting." There was the slightest hint of a smile on his lips, the corners tugging upwards as Go placed his hand on his waist.
Go couldn't help his blush, he felt like a teenager having his first crush on a man again. The music started and the man led the dance, leading his roidmude husband, ehe husband, to the tempo. Chase's body always ran cold, but under the watchful gazes of their friends and family, in this intimate moment, he felt so warm under Go's touch.
They swayed together, and all of a sudden it was like everybody around them just disappeared. Go could only focus on Chase, his hand in his, the weight of his hand on his shoulder, the proximity. The courts be damned, they were a married couple now. Every childhood dream that Go thought he could never ever reach suddenly became viable, reachable.
"I love you." He mumbled, quiet, and had it been anyone else, they might have missed it. But not Chase.
Go spun him as part of the dance and when he was brought back in, their positions switched, with Chase taking his waist. Their loved ones clapped but it was barely background noise. Chase looked so smitten, in his black suit and purple tie, staring into Go's eyes.
"I love you too. That is why we-" "-Married, yeah, I know."
Some things would never change, but Go was okay with that.
Chase dipped him as the song finished, grip strong so that he wouldn't fall or stumble. Then the roidmude pulled him back up, bringing him in close. His lips were cold, but smiley. And Go couldn't help but melt into the man's kiss.
"Go?"
His nose twitched and he rubbed his face against his arm. Somebody gently shook his shoulders. "Go? Love?"
"Five more minutes…"
"This position is detrimental to your spine."
Go exhaled loudly and slowly pulled himself up, cracking his neck as he did so. It was dark out now, no light in the window. Luna was laying between Chase's legs, chewing on Go's sneaker. He sighed.
"I told you not to do that.." The dog looked up, dropping the shoe, she tilted her head to the side. "Yeah yeah.." He laid his head back down.
Chase frowned. Ignored.
Go squeaked when he was picked up out of the chair, flailing until he grabbed onto the roidmude for stability. "That font is horrendous, we are not sending those." Chase adjusted his grip so he was groom carrying his significant other.
The man peeked at the font again, grimacing.
"No no, definitely not.. I'll change it at mach sp-"
Chase began to carry him away from the computer, ignoring his stuttered protests. Luna got up from the ground, following Chase by weaving between his legs best she could at her size. Chase wasn't bothered, used to her antics even with Go's flailing.
He was tossed onto the bed, bouncing once, twice. It was much better than his computer chair… He fell back, stretching out like a starfish. Luna jumped up, getting between his legs and laying her head on his stomach. Go snorted, bringing his hand down to pet her.
"I will adjust the font in the morning. For now, have you eaten yet?"
"Nah."
"Do you wish to eat?"
"Eh.."
"When did you last eat?"
"Like.. Two?"
Chase sighed, but there was no malice. There never was. The roidmude began to remove his work clothes, the paramedic uniform heavy and unwieldy for making dinner. "I'll make you something." He went to the dresser to grab his pajamas.
"You're a saint."
"I do not meet the requirements for this designation."
Go smiled, hand stilling in the dog's fur, he stared up at the ceiling, his heart loud in his ears. It was all worth it in the end, no matter how loud his doubts got when he was alone. He loved Chase, more than anything. For all that he was, for who he'd become, who he'd be.
"Chase."
"Yes, buddy?"
Go licked his lips, four years and he still got nervous. "I love you."
There was a pause.
"I love you too. Rest now. I will bring you food."
"Thanks."
Luna got up the moment Chase stepped into the hall.
"Traitor!"
"She is my dog."
Go laughed, rolling onto his side and stretching. Seven more weeks and he'd be married.. He giggled to himself.
