Hey what's going on over here?

Are you a toku fan? Do you have trans man or transmasc headcanons for toku/toku adjacent characters? I'm doing a blog about that! Come join me in celebrating and spotlighting trans manhood and transmasculinity in tokusatsu characters!

About the blog:

This is a poll for celebration and positivity about trans men and transmasculinity in tokusatsu and adjacent media. I'll be making two posts a day through the month of June (and probably beyond) highlighting a different transmasc or trans man headcanon.

I'm your host Mosswall Grifalinas, and this blog will be emceed by Ankh (from Kamen Rider OOO) and Tani Chiaki (from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger). They're also the mascots for this blog (see header and icon).

Chiaki's dialogue will be written in green

Ankh's dialogue will be written in red

Fuwa is also an honorary mascot who may wander in from time to time. His dialogue will be in blue when he does.

What this blog is for:

Transmasc and trans man headcanons for toku (and toku adjacent*) media.

Transmasculinity is a broad umbrella and I am not here to gatekeep who counts, so whatever your headcanon, if I feel it counts as a good-faith transmasculine read of the character, I will accept it

A character who could be argued to have been created without a gender but still presents masculinely/as a man will also qualify. Ankh, for example, is a homunculus, but he's a homunculus who chooses a very open and deliberate masculine presentation, which is why he's one of this blog's two mascots

Canon transmasc/trans man Toku/Toku-adjacent characters. I'm not sure they exist but I haven't seen every show, what do I know?

Positivity and celebration of trans men and transmasc headcanons in toku and toku-adjacent media

What this blog is not for:

Trans/nonbinary headcanons that aren't trans men or masc.

Canon trans or nonbinary characters who aren't explicitly transmasc/men. We're not here to take crumbs away from our siblings. Have those headcanons in your own time.

Negativity of any kind. If you don't like a headcanon, just keep scrolling, make your own post or blog, hell, block and move on if you have to. I don't care. Literally I don't caaaaare. Just don't make it my problem.

Bad faith headcanons. I will throw these out if I get any.

*What is Toku-adjacent media?

Toku-adjacent media is media that cannot be defined as Toku, but has some kind of connection with it. Anime and manga that draws from existing Toku properties or the concept, in-universe toku properties and characters, international adaptations of toku shows, shows that exist in conversation with the toku genre while (arguably) not being toku themselves, and also Digimon and Precure because the people who introduced me to Toku framed those as siblings to the genre and that is how I think of them.

Examples of these categories are Kamen Rider SD and Fuuto PI, Cyborg Ciderman from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K and Masked Yaiba from Detective Conan, Power Rangers and VR Troopers, and Tokusatsu Gagaga and Tojima Wants to be a Kamen Rider.

Rules:

1. Negativity about any headcanon will not be tolerated and may get you blocked. This is a positivity blog and we're going to keep it that way.

2. If you find yourself getting too het up over a silly Tumblr blog about transmasc/trans man headcanons, consider taking a step back from the internet and take care of yourself instead of making it my problem.

3. Please follow the submission form rules when submitting your characters. Mistakes happen but too much disregard for the rules could get your form thrown out. The rules are there to make things easier on me, and when you ignore them, you create extra work for me. Please do not create extra work for me.

4. You're free to use the "let's take testosterone" posters I made if you want. Also there's no reason you can't make your own yourself if you want, but if you don't feel like it and want me to make one for you, feel free to send me the image to use. I'll post them in batches as they get made.

If you wanted someone to laugh at bad jokes you should have gotten the other guy to cohost. Anyway what are we even doing here? What is our role as hosts? So far all we seem to do is pass occasional comment on the posts.

Well originally this was going to be a tournament so we were going to do all the organization posts and comment on rounds after they finished. But mostly Mossy just likes having us around.

Tch.

Anyway, we can comment on how the week went in the wrapup!

Things got off to kind of a slow start this week. Mossy was actually kind of worried that the blog wasn't going to get any attention but then about midweek they started coming in. There's currently about thirty valid submissions in the submission box at last check, and Mossy hasn't even opened the box this morning yet. With twelve having run already, that means there's enough to get through week 2 very easily, and we assume that more will come in. So, as long as we can get at least twelve submissions a week, the blog will be sustainable.

Though Moss prefers that we get more than that, so he can make sure to mix things up. He's trying to make sure there's a diversity of headcanons being presented, so the more submissions, the more he can make sure we don't have too many similar headcanons back to back.

Anyway, keep sending in your submissions! And remember, if you have any questions, just drop into the askbox. Mossy will be happy to answer, or he'll just make one of us do it.

Sunday Special: Ankh

The thing about Ankh, the reason I read him through a transmasculine lens despite not reading him as having transitioned (unless we consider that the greeed were created without gender and simply have gendered presentations), is that he is so very, loudly, in-your-face masculine. From the moment he takes over Shingo's body his clothing adopts a very specific presentation of flashy masculinity that is undeniable. It's the kind of masculinity you wear when you don't want there to be any kind of doubts or questions about your manhood, but also which denies the expectations that are being placed on you by polite society.

(I also hc Shingo as a trans man but that's neither here nor there.)

Every once in awhile I really end up sinking my teeth into a character whose masculinity and manhood is soothing to me- not because the character himself is soothing (in fact it's usually the opposite), but because the character is one that I know would never let anyone challenge their manhood or take it away from them. They wear a masculinity that they've built with their own two hands that's so, so important to me.

I also love what a huge dork he turns into any time he ever gets even a single minute to not be miserable. Fucking ipad baby theatre kid.

The one who walks the path of heaven isn't cis :) Canonically had his name changed (by getting adopted) so his full name spells out 'path of heaven, everything's ruler' in kanji, when picking a fake name chose his own name + kanji meaning 'man', literally chosen by the heavens (henshin device flew out of the sky specifically for him), the universe bends over backwards so he can get everything he wants so his testosterone probably also falls out of the sky

I've been choosing who goes in the queue each day based on a variety of factors and some behind the scenes math that I don't feel like going into, but now that I'm getting regular submissions without having to pad from the secret lists I need to go through them one by one and make sure the earliest submissions get added soon. Your Toku Fave is Transmasc: NOX

He/him nonbinary (transmasc)

I think CODE was one of the first places he had an opportunity to really explore masculinity, and it was very gender affirming for him in the way Baku describes it to be for himself (ie. filling the macho stereotype of a suave handsome super-spy who saves beautiful ladies), which worked for him for a while, but getting lost in his dream gave him a new perspective and sort of detachment from gender, along with being disillusioned about that super-spy fantasy. He likes being seen as masculine overall and being gender nonconforming in other aspects. Also, he's just SO particular about his name and identity, it's been pretty well confirmed he picked the name NOX for himself and makes a distinction between that and Odaka Kensei ("The man by that name no longer exists"). That's also why I'm submitting him as NOX instead of Odaka Kensei, I don't think it's a deadname to him but I think he prefers NOX.

Your Toku Fave is a Trans Man: Scott Truman

Submission:

Trans man who always struggled with intense gender dysphoria and rejection sensitive dysphoria. He wanted to prove to his father that he could be as much of a man as Marcus was. After defeating Venjix and feeling secure that his father is proud of him, he feels much more comfortable and confident in his body and doesn’t feel like he has to perform masculinity as hard.

Since today's posts will feature the first time we're having multiple submissions for a character, I thought I'd break down my plan for how to do multiple submissions. Doing a numbered list but in my head it functions more like a flow chart

If a character gets multiple submissions before I run them, all of the compatible submissions will go on one post

Compatibility is just a fancy way of saying do I title the post trans man or transmasc, it's not really complicated

If the submissions aren't compatible, then I'll post one set and leave the other set for another day.

Or I might get cheeky and post both sets on the same day, but that's really a spur of the moment decision I might potentially make

I want to make the blog fun for me to run so being cheeky is always on the table

If I get more submissions for a character after they're run, they'll most likely be run again on another day, so feel free to submit headcanons for characters that have already been run

Depending on submission numbers I might leave them a hot minute before I put them back up though

But submissions aren't just about "someone headcanons this character as transmasc/a trans man", it's also a way to share and celebrate the specific ways that people headcanon those characters

One person's headcanon doesn't necessarily speak for someone else's so don't think you have to resign yourself to "well this person already got their headcanon run >_>"

If I've run agender trans man Reika and in your heart Reika is a butch-trans cusper, then by all means submit butch-trans cusp Reika and it'll go in the queue with the rest

At the end of the day, it's more trans manhood and transmasculinity being celebrated in the fandom, and that's always a good thing ^-^

Trans men, repressed

Luka has an entire episode where she gets bodyswapped with her male crew member and immediately excitedly declares she's going to go enjoy being a boy. She also gives his body a make-over (hair and clothing) and says "I've always wanted to dress like this". Even though she's a pirate??? Girl question mark who is stopping you??? I highly doubt Captain Marvelous is out here enforcing gender roles and performance on his ship and that's the only authority the Gokaigers respect so like????? Hello??? Hello???????

Anyway Luka Milfy is a trans man who just hasn't realized that's an option or questioned the idea of being a man. We'll get there eventually 🙂‍↕️
