Oh boy, a new toy!... Think back to the last new gadget or luxury item you bought. From the time we were little kids, we have experienced joy and excitement when we get a new toy. We can’t help but have a little bit of that new toy feeling creep in when we’re making significant purchases - like marketing for OUR business. We are just as vulnerable to marketers selling marketing as we are to marketers selling consumer goods. And why wouldn’t we be? Growing our business is the vehicle to growing our wealth. This shiny new marketing system, tactic, or strategy is what will bring you the economic power to buy all the other shiny toys you want. Trust me, I’ve been there! The thing is buying marketing for your business, whether it’s software tools, information, consultation, or services, is the most serious of business decisions. The prospect of new sales is exciting, but implementing an effective marketing scheme is the result of a lot of hard work and discipline. And time! The time it takes to see the full results is way longer than how long the excitement will last. The disappointment at not seeing early results is going to cause you to be even more susceptible to further marketing promises. Congratulations, you now officially have... Shiny Object Syndrome. What’s the solution? Pick a marketing system that makes sense! What’s a marketing system that makes sense? It’s simple... It fits your budget, you have the resources to implement it, you feel like you can stick with it for more than 6 months, and you have evidence that it worked for someone else in a similar business. Are there numerous systems that would work well for you? Likely, yes! And here’s the next part... you have to pick just one and commit to it. Trying to execute two or more is only going to reduce your efforts in any one direction. So choose wisely, stick with it, and get on with your business!
