2. What are the character's usual types? Is it one another or are they taking a chance on something new?

For Inara, she doesn’t really have a type. She’s more or less happily avoided relationships (and casual entanglements) right until she comes face to face with Jack for months on end as they settle into their new project. Probably then, she does have a type and it’s just Jack.

Amelia is somewhat similar. Her father’s death and watching her mother grieve left a deep mark on her. She dates casually (in the old school sense) here and there until Elysium and N-school at which point she shelves the whole project until Kaidan comes along. Kaidan and Jack are pretty significant opposites though…

Jack… 😂 I commented recently that I try to avoid thinking about Jack’s past so that I don’t have to come to any conclusions. But I think this holds true for him regardless (from Amelia’s Citadel fic):

And both Inara and Amelia hit that mark quite soundly.

19. Do they have any fears or set backs in terms of relationships?

Amelia’s is definitely her father’s death. She’s honestly a bit skeptical about entering a relationship with Kaidan precisely because she has serious doubts about being in a relationship with a fellow soldier—whom she might have to watch die, or worse give him orders that result in him dying.

It probably made it that much easier for her to breakup with him in 3, tbh. And maybe she was just looking for an excuse by then to get out of it. (But she also wasn’t all that wrong that Kaidan was still in love with the pre-death version of her.)

(“Hey, why did you give her this past with Kaidan?” “Because I make questionable choices in character design and I wanted her to be distinctly Inara’s opposite in key ways.” 😭)

I have two fics where she falls for Jack before ME3 (my one bed duology and my yet-unpublished-still-WIP Leviathans fic), and there she has significant misgivings about the wisdom of falling in love (to varying degrees) with the head of Cerberus, all of which are proven right as soon as she watches Cerberus troops execute those people on Mars.

Inara has her past with the Reds. A strong sense of “relationships are for *other* people with more stability in their lives”. She doesn’t like the idea of how much vulnerability a relationship requires (something eased by the way that she and Jack have absolutely seen each other’s worst and weakest moments by the end of the war).

Jack. Oh, Jack.

In both instances, he falls first. For Inara, he’s basically had his people keep an eye on her since she enlists and he watches her more directly after they meet shortly after Torfan (where he totally develops a crush 😂). In the process and to his great annoyance, he falls in love with her.

Amelia’s is like this when she gives him her “I’ll win this war without sacrificing the soul of our species” speech at the end of ME2 -> 😡🥺🥰😠🤦‍♂️🙁😟

Anyways. He is in no hurry to even try to jump into a relationship with a Shepard he’s convinced couldn’t ever return his feelings. He has his whole past holding him back. Shepard is *important* in a way that nothing else, no one else is or ever has been, and he’s downright terrified of the consequences of Getting It Wrong.

(A friend and I have dubbed this part of his relationship with Shep “restraint as a love language”—he holds back, follows her lead, downplays his feelings, refuses to admit to anything until she indicates that she wants him to. The fic that is of the essence of this is here — I didn’t write it 😂 The last chapter totally made me cry tho.)

8. What was their first date like?

Well technically their very, very first “dates” were during Jayce courting her formally. They spend an entire day together in Jayce’s estate gardens (with Lia’s brother Theo chaperoning ofc) and they read over some of Jayce and Viktor’s works in progress. …

Jayce picks Lia’s brain about what problems they’re stuck on, where the errors in their calculations are, what’s wrong with the technical schematics they’ve drawn up, how they can work on presenting things to the public etc. He finds her analysis both refreshing and groundbreaking because her brain works so much differently than he and Viktor’s collective mind does.

And Lia is more dazzled by the inventions and scientific advancements they’ve come up with than any of the many, many expensive gifts Jayce presents her and her family with. (Flowers, a significant amount of money, and exotic finds for the time like chocolate and tropical fruits). She’s also incredibly moved by his serious consideration of her scientific opinion as a woman during this era. It’s how she knows he’s deathly serious about his intentions with her. He respects and values her mind.

Her first date with *both* of them involves them practicing some disc shooting (which Viktor is wildly talented at). It was at Viktor’s request because he wanted to meet her in person after only being able to communicate with her via letters at first. He holds her scandalously close to “help her with her form” but it’s really because he wanted to test their physical attraction to each other. Needless to say the sparks were flying WILDLY and Jayce was watching them from afar like “oh yeah…it’s all coming together exactly as I knew it would.”😈

21. Would they get into fights? What over, and how do they move forward?

They do get into mild scientific disagreements all the time. It’s one of the hallmarks of brilliant minds. They’re going to disagree often. Questioning each other often is vital to proving their work is accurate.

But they also fight about serious things too. At the beginning, Viktor has a hard time believing this whole three way relationship would ever work. He deep down had a fear that Jayce was just getting sick of him and wanted to choose someone else over him. Which Jayce feels legitimately sick over.

Then again once Viktor’s really, really sick again. Lia is pregnant and she is desperate to see him because she’s of course worried about him. She’s not allowed to because doctor’s don’t and can’t know the nature of their relationship. It’s not deemed necessary or safe for her to see him. She fights Jayce on it because he won’t let her go either.

Jayce can’t stomach the thought of something bad happening and him losing not only Viktor, but also Lia and their child. He’s in actual shambles from having to bear the weight of caring for them both when they are both in dire need of him. He’s always been an anxious, self-conscious person and this time is really hard for him in every way.

Lia is a mess of worry, which isn’t good for the baby. Viktor is so depressed he can’t be there to help Lia during the pregnancy on top of being riddled with pneumonia and god knows what else. It’s less of an outward fight and more of them all struggling with circumstances they can’t control and finding the will to get through it because of how much they care about each other.

6. Which character developed feelings first? And is there a specific moment or way this could've happened?

It's hard to say, actually. This was a slow burn-turned-trainwreck for both of them, and they both started catching feelings far before they admitted it. But I imagine it may have been Terzo.

Ale piqued his interest from the start: a flighty, razor-tongued little thing able to stand toe-to-toe with him in banter and in a fight. There's an understanding in that I think he'd been looking for, for a long time.

As for a specific moment, there's a scene I've had in my head for a while now of Ale dozing off on a rainy drive home. Terzo pulls them up to the steps, watches them get out of his car, and finds himself caught in the headlights: realizing that he could sit in this moment, always; that he doesn't want them to leave.

It's the first time he wants to kiss them goodbye, but he doesn't. And he is wholly, royally fucked from then on.

One of Terzo's love languages is food, but his cooking repertoire is threadbare at best. This means a lot of lovingly-curated snack plates and charcuterie, often including some mixture of chocolate and wine, and often at ungodly hours of the morning.

Ale can be confrontational as both a friend and partner; if they're in a mood for an argument, they'll find one. At times, this has benefitted them by ensuring any grudges are aired clean before they can fester, but this has also come back to bite them. Knowing where to draw the line is a challenge for them.

4. In what areas would they help one another grow?

At the crux of it, I see these two helping each other most in finding peace and acceptance with themselves. They are very similar people under the surface — but on it, they're about as opposite as they come.

At a high-level, Terzo is someone who thrives in new sensations and experiences, but is often tunnel-visioned by grandiose ambitions for his life. It is very, very hard for him to slow down — or to truly feel satisfied with anything as it is. There is always the next best thing, the next hurdle, the next shoe to drop. Ale is one of few partners that have truly grounded him in the present moment and helped him sit with what he needs, not just want he wants. These are not easy conversations for him, and they require a high degree of patience. Through Ale, he begins to nurture that patience towards himself.

Ale, in contrast, is someone who finds comfort in routine, and is relatively content with a simple life. They are not always willing to step out of their comfort zone, and even less willing to challenge their own sense of safety. I often describe them as the staunch rationalist to Terzo's manic creative; they make sense of the world through clear boundaries and, true to their trade, often view their life as an equation. Terzo was an unknown variable, from the start; the instigator who helps broaden their world, leaving the door open but letting them choose how to approach it. In many ways, he helps them embrace them the side of themself that desires, but fears, adventure.

18. How fast do they each tend to move in relationships?

They both are quick to crush and slow to love, but Terzo is definitely the more forward of the two. In his past relationships, he has typically been the one calling the shots: the first to approach, and the first to leave. Ale is an observer first and a doer second, and is usually much slower to act in relationships.

19. Do they have any fears or set backs in terms of relationships?

In general, Terzo's relationship with intimacy is...complicated. He craves closeness, but dreads that closeness being used against him. Underpinning that, he has a deep fear of abandonment, and a penchant for viewing himself poorly. He's not an easy person to love, and he knows it; beneath the suave and the charm, he is a deeply spiteful, petty, and self-sabotaging man. He has a habit of keeping partners at arms' length, as a result, and often breaks off relationships early before they can catch sight of his fangs.

Ale has a deep fear of being misunderstood, or worse, trapped by a relationship. They grew up in a broken home, met the love of their life, and found themself wading through an ugly marriage and equally ugly divorce. Their trust towards relationships was strained for years after the fact, to the point where they swore them off entirely. Even still, they are hesitant to give new people a chance.
