2. What are the character's usual types? Is it one another or are they taking a chance on something new?

For Inara, she doesn’t really have a type. She’s more or less happily avoided relationships (and casual entanglements) right until she comes face to face with Jack for months on end as they settle into their new project. Probably then, she does have a type and it’s just Jack.

Amelia is somewhat similar. Her father’s death and watching her mother grieve left a deep mark on her. She dates casually (in the old school sense) here and there until Elysium and N-school at which point she shelves the whole project until Kaidan comes along. Kaidan and Jack are pretty significant opposites though…

Jack… 😂 I commented recently that I try to avoid thinking about Jack’s past so that I don’t have to come to any conclusions. But I think this holds true for him regardless (from Amelia’s Citadel fic):

And both Inara and Amelia hit that mark quite soundly.

19. Do they have any fears or set backs in terms of relationships?

Amelia’s is definitely her father’s death. She’s honestly a bit skeptical about entering a relationship with Kaidan precisely because she has serious doubts about being in a relationship with a fellow soldier—whom she might have to watch die, or worse give him orders that result in him dying.

It probably made it that much easier for her to breakup with him in 3, tbh. And maybe she was just looking for an excuse by then to get out of it. (But she also wasn’t all that wrong that Kaidan was still in love with the pre-death version of her.)

(“Hey, why did you give her this past with Kaidan?” “Because I make questionable choices in character design and I wanted her to be distinctly Inara’s opposite in key ways.” 😭)

I have two fics where she falls for Jack before ME3 (my one bed duology and my yet-unpublished-still-WIP Leviathans fic), and there she has significant misgivings about the wisdom of falling in love (to varying degrees) with the head of Cerberus, all of which are proven right as soon as she watches Cerberus troops execute those people on Mars.

Inara has her past with the Reds. A strong sense of “relationships are for *other* people with more stability in their lives”. She doesn’t like the idea of how much vulnerability a relationship requires (something eased by the way that she and Jack have absolutely seen each other’s worst and weakest moments by the end of the war).

Jack. Oh, Jack.

In both instances, he falls first. For Inara, he’s basically had his people keep an eye on her since she enlists and he watches her more directly after they meet shortly after Torfan (where he totally develops a crush 😂). In the process and to his great annoyance, he falls in love with her.

Amelia’s is like this when she gives him her “I’ll win this war without sacrificing the soul of our species” speech at the end of ME2 -> 😡🥺🥰😠🤦‍♂️🙁😟

Anyways. He is in no hurry to even try to jump into a relationship with a Shepard he’s convinced couldn’t ever return his feelings. He has his whole past holding him back. Shepard is *important* in a way that nothing else, no one else is or ever has been, and he’s downright terrified of the consequences of Getting It Wrong.

(A friend and I have dubbed this part of his relationship with Shep “restraint as a love language”—he holds back, follows her lead, downplays his feelings, refuses to admit to anything until she indicates that she wants him to. The fic that is of the essence of this is here — I didn’t write it 😂 The last chapter totally made me cry tho.)

Kaidan walked into Penny's quarters and looked around before he spotted her on the couch. She had a stack of datapads beside her even as she was reading one. She looked exhausted, worn. They'd just come from Rannoch, though, and as bad as everything was, he knew she needed a break.

He sat down next to her. "Penny."

"Hm?"

"You need a break."

She made a negating noise.

"You do, though. You just took a Reaper on on foot."

She glanced at him. "And now I have reports to read." She looked back down and scrolled.

Kaidan sighed. "Look, the Reapers are machines, but you aren't. You need rest."

"I'm pretty sure Miranda installed a caffeine drip along with my implants, actually," she replied.

He couldn't tell if she was joking or not. Wait, no, that was ridiculous. Of course she was joking. He frowned and watched her for a few moments, thinking.

He leaned in and kissed her cheek.

She gave him a mild glare in response. "Kaidan. I'm working."

"And I'm saying you need rest. Do you need me to bring Chakwas into this?"

"Chakwas knows me better than you do, I think," she retorted sharply.

Kaidan drew back, stung by her unexpected strike.

She looked at him, immediately contrite. "Sorry," she said. "That was too harsh."

She definitely needed a break. He gave her another kiss, more insistently this time.

She responded in a way that gave him hope--at least until she turned away. "I'm sorry, Kaidan."

He sat back and studied her some more. Regret lingered in her expression, and he was pretty sure it was for her remark and turning him away.

He gave her another kiss. She responded again, returning it longer this time. She pulled back. "Kaidan..."

"Come on, Penny," he said softly. "You really need to rest. I read those reports. Nothing will happen if you wait until you've slept to read them."

She sighed and began to look torn.

He kissed her again, and this time, finally, she set down the datapad before wrapping her arms around him.

This prompt was basically tailor-made for Amelia 😂 — but will do bonus Penny/Kaidan too and oh I just realized how to make it work and now I need them both. :D But this one came first, so...

Amelia leaned against the door jamb as she looked into Jack’s office. He had—at last—moved away from his desk and was sitting in his reading chair, datapad in hand, his bourbon at his side. And as she watched, he reached up and adjusted his reading glasses in the way he tended to do when he should be in bed instead of reading his tenth report of the night.

She coughed lightly.

He glanced up and over his glasses at her, a smirk of challenge at his lips—before, of course, turning back to his reading.

Amelia sighed loudly and began to walk towards him. Halfway across the room his eyes flicked up to meet hers again, only this time he reached for his glass and took a small drink before setting it back down. He was doing it on purpose, she knew—he’d declared her odd and yet endearing upon learning that she liked watching him do that. She’d blushed then kissed him to shut him up, a surprisingly effective maneuver.

By now she stood in front of him. He looked up at her then back down again, though she’d seen the amused taunt in his eyes, establishing that yes, he knew exactly what he was doing. Difficult, impossible man.

He scrolled on his datapad.

Amelia evaluated the situation, finding points of weakness and possible entry, then crafted a plan and executed it: she plopped into his lap.

She really did enjoy Jack’s noises of indignation.

He maneuvered the datapad into a position where he could still see it and went on ignoring her.

Stubborn, difficult, impossible man.

She shifted very deliberately, catching his sharp inhale in response, though he kept his attention on his reading. She’d expected as much.

The next stage of her plan required more subtlety. She wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head against him.

He scrolled again.

She waited.

And after a moment he shifted, adjusting to a more comfortable position.

Amelia smirked. Now she just needed to keep working at that weak spot in his defenses.

She tilted her head up and kissed him, just above his collar.

He ignored her, as she'd known he would.

She repeated the action. He scrolled again.

She pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh. He was very good at this.

She was better. She'd bested the Reapers after all, she could take Jack's iron control.

She kissed him again, this time letting her breath linger after her lips.

She heard him swallow. He reached for his bourbon but thought better of it for he stopped half way there and scrolled again instead.

Amelia was beginning to think he'd stopped actually reading at some point, but she wasn't willing to bet on it just yet.

She retaliated by shifting her position slightly--slowly.

Her kisses reached his jaw.

His datapad was held increasingly tightly. She laughed silently. They were five years into this marriage business: of course, she had long ago learned how to play his game.

(She didn't know anymore who enjoyed it more, either.)

Amelia paused at that thought, resting her head against his shoulder, squeezing ever so slightly with her arms. And though she hadn't meant it as the next stage of her attack, he let go of his datapad with one hand and wrapped his free arm around her.

She sat back up after a moment. This time their eyes met, and she saw in his softened expression that he had understood. For another beat they looked at each other before she smirked again and he looked amused in response.

She leaned in and pressed her lips to his, gently, softly.

Jack dropped his datapad and brought his other arm around her as he deepened the kiss. Amelia sighed and pulled back slightly, enough to reach up and take his glasses off. She reached up and ran her hand through his hair before bringing it to a rest at the back of his head. "Come on," she said. "Let's go to bed."

He took his glasses from her and folded them carefully, placing them next to his bourbon. "Let's."

3. favourite scent and why?

I was really into indie perfume houses in 2015 and still have a ton that are impossible to use up. My favorites are (unfortunately) from the earliest releases of Sixteen92, a house that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone due to shady business practices. Lolita is a fresh apple scent that I love, and Calaveritas is a great dark sugar when I’m feeling more witchy.

Non-fragrance smells I love: my partner’s natural neck scent (🥰) and the top of my cat’s fuzzy little head.

23. a hobby you tried but didn’t stick with?

Crochet 😭 I tried so hard. I still have the supplies that have been sitting around for…13 years now lmao. I did manage to figure out cross-stitch though, so the fiber arts aren’t completely lost on me.

27. a favourite lyric?

I hate this I can’t choose. Impossible. I’m just going to drop the lyrics from the refrain of the Beta Bands’s Dry the Rain. They’re simple lyrics that just strike a chord with me. The whole song is lovely.

If they're separate and they see something that reminds them of their beloved. What would it most likely be and why?

I had to think about this for a long time. It’s much harder than it seems at first glance because it’s always something small and not obvious.

No one would probably ever guess that for me it tends to be something like leatherwork (Husband’s hobby) or Golden Retrievers (Husband’s childhood dog).

So it’s something hidden. It’s something that they know about each other and others don’t necessarily (though someone else might). And that’s a big question because it’s about those little moments in between the big ones.

I’ve been thinking about it all weekend long. I managed to reach Inara’s (and only Inara’s, not even what reminds Inara of Jack) relatively easily, but since @raeofalbion also asked specifically for Amelia I didn’t want to just leave it there (plus, Jack! 😂)

So far, this is what I’ve come up with —

Jack for Inara: It’s the type of candy bar he caught her stealing and let her get away with when she was a kid. And for years whenever he sees it, he thinks of her and wonders how she is. In the post-war years, it’s wildflowers, because she falls in love with them when they settle into the mountains. Between growing up on the streets and then moving into space, they are a total novelty for her, and she loves them.

Inara for Jack — For years, she only ever remembered that shade of blue his eyes are and the sandwich he bought her when she was 16. Any item that gets even close to that blue. Any menu with that sandwich on it.

Amelia for Jack — She’s put together his love of mountains and his stubbornness and come up with mules. Much to his fond dismay. She think it’s hilarious and sleeps with a stuffed mule when he’s away. Also, classic spacecraft. Twentieth century stuff. It’s that topic he will happily go on and on about if someone asks the right question.

Jack for Amelia — He knows it’s cliched but ever since Hackett nearly made them miss an entire mission because he was off buying a model ship for her, it’s totally model ships.

10. what’s your favourite piece of clothing you own?

IMPOSSIBLE. Probably a my polka dotted jacket I got from Hot Topic in the late 00s. Come to think of it I got a few great jackets. I live in Florida and never get to wear them :(

When thinking about this question I realized I’ve donated a lot of my favorites over the years (RIP perfect polka dotted dress, I should’ve had your zipper repaired!).

28. when you’re sad, do you prefer to listen to music to match your mood, or listen to happy music?

I get really into the sad shit when I’m sad lmao. You know it’s bad when I pull out the Jeff Buckley.
