245. Please dont cry. SilverFlint (maybe after argue or flashback?)

I was going to try to do something cute with this, but then I wrote the angstiest thing ever to angst. I apologize to you, my lovely prompt-sender, and to anyone else whose life is ruined by this.

Post-season 4. Nothing explicit, just angst on top of angst smothered in angst with a side of angst.

“Please don’t cry.”

Silver looks up, startled, and stares in confusion over at Flint. The little cart they’re sitting in is rattling down a pocked, weathered dirt road, growing ever-closer to the Savannah plantation where Silver has assured Flint - has promised him, has sworn to him on his life - they’ll find Thomas Hamilton.

“I’m not,” he says, bristling. His eyes feel gritty and tired from lack of sleep, and he can tell his face is not– well, he knows he doesn’t look his best, put it that way. But he isn’t crying. He doesn’t cry that easily; he used to, once upon a time, but it was beaten out of him at an early age.

“When we get there, I mean,” Flint says, looking away from Silver. He seems uncomfortable around him, now. He’s angry with him, which is of course understandable, but he also seems to be treating Silver like he’s a stranger to him, which is so much worse. To go from what they had been to each other, to what they are now - he can’t find words for how utterly destroyed he feels.

“I won’t. I’m happy for you, I did this for you, for your– future,” Silver says, swallowing past a sudden lump in his throat.

“That choice wasn’t yours to make,” Flint says, and he’s said those words so often to Silver on this journey, he’s yelled them and raged and seethed, but now as he says them yet again he just sounds tired.

Silver sighs and watches the scenery roll by. He’s been going back and forth on what he’s going to do when they arrive at the plantation, whether he’ll go in with Flint or stay away. Whether he’ll…meet Thomas.

A voice in his head tells him he mustn’t do that, because he won’t be able to stand it. He fidgets, picking at his fingernails, reaching up for a moment to close his hand around the pendant at his throat.

Before he can come to a decision, the cart abruptly lurches to a stop. They’ve arrived. He looks over at Flint, desperate to find the right parting words, needing to say something to him that conveys the burden of his wretched heart. This is more than likely the last time they’ll see each other, ever, and Silver needs to express himself to Flint before he doesn’t have that chance anymore, before it slips through his fingers like so many grains of sand.

But Flint is already climbing down from the cart, he’s walking away, he’s gone. Without another word.

Silver doesn’t cry then. He doesn’t cry when, from a distance, he sees Thomas and Flint embracing. He doesn’t cry when he sees Captain Flint melt away and James McGraw return, triumphant, in his place. He doesn’t cry on the journey home, alone with his thoughts, with everything he never found the courage to say. He doesn’t even cry when he tells Madi what he’s done, although it’s a near thing.

Months later, after standing on that godforsaken hill and staring out at the unforgiving sea for yet another day, seeking everything and seeing nothing, he returns home and goes awkwardly to his knees at Madi’s feet. She’s sitting in a rocking chair with her sewing in her hands, but she sets it aside when he puts his heavy head in her lap. He wraps his arms around her legs, and finally, then, he cries.
