Hey, Ben 10 fandom, we should make some semi-official shipping weeks for our favorite ships. I’m already a participants of Tim/Kon Week in the DC fandom, and Fakiru Week in the Princess Tutu fandom. We should have a Brooken (Ben/Rook) Week, and a Gwevin (Gwen/Kevin) Week.
I suggest the week of October 10th for Brooken (10/10), and week of November 11th for Gwevin (11/11).
Who’s with me!?
EDIT: 10/10 this year falls on a Sunday, so Brooken Week would be Oct. 4-10, 11/11 is a Wednesday, so Gwevin Week would be Nov. 8-14
Trying to write a fic for #shikasakuhanami and I'm absolutely DYING. First chapter is twelve pages. That's a full third of everything written so far, and this is so not getting finished on time :/
I'm interested in making my own ship week. Any advice on how to make one?
Ah. Hmm, that is a difficult question. And not 100% Wendip related, so I’m gonna add a keep reading
Wendip Week begun its life quite spontaneously (x), with @oxsugarxcoatedxo making the tumblr after we (myself, nautiscarader and @brunetta6 agreed), if i remember correctly, after noticing the lack of Wendip content, and any “hub” for it. Even since then I am mostly taking care (if you can call it that way) of the tumblr’s layout. CSS is not difficult if you have an unlimited supply of your favourite beverage and access to StackExchange.
If you have more than one person, you can make them co-admins as well, so they can accept and edit submissions, and whatnot.
For last two or so years I have been watching @secretsecrettunnel‘s Kataang Week (@kataang-week), and when we got the opportunity to spread the word of Wendip, I (sub)consciously based some of the logistics from it. (for example, this year’s edition also includes a Wildcard, eight day).
Voting is done via SurveyMonkey, a web service which allows making internet polls for free (though they have paid plans, but a free account is more than enough). They offer nifty things like randomising list of options, or applying logic to the answers. As a survey maker, you will be able to look up some of the statistics, like how many users voted each day, as well as seeing individual answers. I’m sure there are other services like that, but this is the one I stick with.
Of course you can force prompts yourself, but from what I have seen, voting is a preferred method.
Last year we made a bit of a mistake with the short time we gave our watchers, so this is something you should into consideration - again, a week per prompt is something I might have borrowed from kataang-week.
Create an FAQ page on the tumblr, make sure people can see it well from the main site, so that they don’t get confused about dates and whatnot. This year we got surprisingly many asks about what “5+1” format is, after it got chosen as a prompt.
Make sure the font on your page is suitable for fics, and what happens to your blog’s layout when you scale it in browser. I hate when a font is so small I need to scale it, and then random bits of CSS starts flying around, blocking the text.
I’m not sure right now what else could come into making a shipping week, mostly because I’m pulling an all-nighter and it’s 6 am. if anyone else has any tips, or suggestions for pc-the-unicorn here, feel free to reblog it with your help.
A few days ago I made a post suggesting we hold Brooken and Gwevin shipping weeks for the Ben 10 fandom. I got a lot of positive feedback about the idea and a lot of people interested in participating in one or both. So, I made a side blog for it.
Please follow @brooken-gwevin-weeks
Prompts for Brooken Week will be going up within the next few days. Gwevin Week prompts will be up nearer the middle of October.
I do recommend following the blog as I will not be reflagging all the content to my main.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but is the franchise swap prompt reserved to other toku franchises only?
Yes, ideally it should be. This is an event meant to celebrate tokusatsu, so the franchise swap prompt should also stay within toku.
That said, what is considered tokusatsu for this event is fairly flexible. For example, for practical purposes, the live action version of Sukeban Deka is considered tokusatsu here, even though there is an actual debate about whether it truly fits the category or if it should be seen as just a live action drama.
If you want to bend the rules a little and are interested in trying to include a franchise that was not originally toku (whether it comes from animation, videogames, manga, etc.), you can look into whether it has a live action adaptation and see if you can reasonably treat that version as tokusatsu, making it clear that your work is based on that live action. Hell, if you are creative enough and really dig into it, you could even argue that Blue Beetle (2023) can count as toku.
Yet, it is also important to know how far you can bend the branch without breaking it. As much as you might love something like One Piece, if not even the live-action version can reasonably be considered tokusatsu, then it is better to discard it. Do not force it. The same applies to the MCU and the DCU in general (Blue Beetle is a very specific exception, and again, only if you are actually able to justify it properly).
The guidelines include a dedicated section (actually the very first one) explaining what is and is not considered tokusatsu for this event. Since it is obviously impossible for us to know or have seen every single tokusatsu production around the world, I leave room for each participant to reflect on what they personally consider toku based on that section, and then decide what kind of fanwork they want to create.
So yes, in short, for the franchise swap prompt (and for the event as a whole), all fanworks should be based on tokusatsu. What counts as toku? Use the guidelines as your base, analyze it from there, and create your wonderful work. I am sure it will turn out great ❤️
Sorry if this answer ended up being longer than necessary for such a simple question, but I felt it was a good opportunity to explain this as well. While the intention of this fanweek is to specifically celebrate tokusatsu as a medium (which is why the rules about what does not count as toku or hybrid franchises are quite specific) and shipping fandom, it is also meant to be fairly flexible so that anyone who wants to participate can do so, without losing sight of the roots and foundations of what brings us all together here...

I hope this answers your question and helps clarify things a bit!
