Writing Tips 6

This is a good question, @lunaklysm! I feel like there isn’t enough about just two people being friends and that being the whole story without it being romantic at all.

What can help is how they refer to one another, So keeping their words casual, like bud or mate could help. If they’re posher, then go for Sir, Miss, and then have their words become more casual over time. This keeps things more friendly, and try to avoid words like ‘dearest’ or ‘darling’.

The theme or storyline can also make this either harder or easier. A lot of slice of life stories have a focus on relationships, tending to be romantic. If you’re going for that kind of story, you have to keep it very interesting and focused on different things.

You will have to understand that some people will ship your characters together. I am currently writing a story and I have sent out drafts, You will get people commenting how these two people are a cute couple or in my case, I have a complaint that the wrong people got together and not the childhood friends.

You can have characters that are shallow, selfish and assholes but be great friend’s with one another. This is also without it appearing one is going to back-stab the other. The main ideas in these kind of friendships are self improvement and giving when you normally don’t. So for example, both character’s are criminals and steal from a lot of people, But they share their stuff with one another, even if one isn’t as good.

Make sure they have personality and interests outside of the other. If they spend every living second together, holding onto each other and never letting the other go, this can be seen as possessive and unhealthy. Especially if this is one sided, and if it’s on both sides it either comes off as emotionally abusive/controlling or romantically interested in one another.

They can do couple like things, but beware of shippers. If you, let say, have them adopt a child, living together without partners or anything like that expect people to assume there is a relationship. It’s also better to not to tell them who they can or can’t ship.

RedPepper Red & Pepper

“what’s tha password,” Red teased on the other side of the door.

“i got tha, ehehe, got tha pizza an’ if ya don’t heehee, don’t open i’ll eat it all myself.”

“good enough,” Red opened the door and beamed, “heya, doll. come in so we can get ta eatin’.”

Pepper shuffled in, blushing because “heck, ya know you callin’ me doll, eheh, makes me all flustered.”

Red’s grin morphed to a pleased smirk, “yeah. i know,” and he shut the door and led Pepper inside. “now let’s set that pizza on tha table an’ get to talkin’. how’re you an’ your bro? he still the president or whatever?”

“yeah,” Pepper set the pizza box on the table and opened it up, “he’s runnin’ around, eheh, l-like a chicken with no head. but he’s happier if he’s busy.”

Red nodded, setting up the plates and getting them both a can of soda and a bottle of mustard each, “yeah, i can relate. mine’s proud as punch to be the face of monster kind. even if he has ta be all schmoopy about it.”

Pepper giggled from happiness and picked out his first slice. Date night was always the best, catching up with Red and enjoying a relaxing time. All the comforts of home and none of the stresses...with the added perk of Red.
