at first derek tries his best to just not talk about it

they are all speechless when they go to the funeral together

derek goes a week without saying anything and then one day after penelope and spencer go home early and surprise derek with cupcakes he doesn’t eat any and just locks himself in the bedroom until dinner

he picks at his plate while spencer and penny eat and he doesn’t even realize that he’s just staring at it until spencer puts a hand on his shoulder after cleaning his own dish and he’s like “der, are you okay? you’ve been taking on a lot of cases and you’ve been eating less, you didn’t even look at penelope and i’s cupca-“ “spencer, i don’t want to talk about it.” “okay well i’m here whenever-“ “SPENCER. i can’t.” and derek quickly stands up from his seat and walks back into the bedroom, he stays there laying on the bed until the other two come in to sleep

derek doesn’t even realize how much he’s isolated himself until two nights later when he wakes up around one in the morning because spencer and penelope aren’t in bed and he goes into the kitchen to find spencer and penelope sitting on the counter both with tears streaming down their faces, holding eachother

dereks super concerned immediately, there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for the two of them and he doesn’t want them hurting, he asks what happened

“h-he had a nightmare.” penny sobs out “you left us. you didn’t know how to deal with your mom so you just left.”

spencer pulls away from penny and he’s like “you haven’t talked to us besides work in two days, derek. and the last time you did you yelled. we’re worried”

derek lets out a long sigh and a single tear drops from his eye and his voice is all small “oh my god, i’m so sorry. you don’t deserve that, i’m so sorry. it’s just- my momma, she was the only one left that really remembers my dad. sarah knows, but she doesn’t talk, and desiree was too young. everything she’s ever told me about my dad and everything she didn’t is gone now.”

spencer sniffs and grabs dereks hands and a small smile breaks onto his face “derek, no it’s not, and you know that. everything your mom kept to herself isn’t gone. it’s just with her, because it’s hers to keep. everything she told you and everything you know about him is still here. it’s with you. its with you and all of the wonderfulness you bring to me and penelope by just existing every day. it’s all still here. right in your heart, where nothing can touch it.”

derek pulls spencer into a hug as he cries and he’s like “thank you spencer. god, you always make everything better.”

after they’re all done crying penelope helps them all clean off their faces and they all drink some water before going to bed a lot more settled than they did before
