Happy 22nd birthday to the best game in the world (Yume Nikki)
Shitai-San, Floyag, Jellyfish, Frog
It's been a hot minute since I've done these Yume Nikki cards, but here's some NPCs from the dense forest that I didn't get around to originally
My favorite silly ones🩷🩷

135: Masada and Shitai are friends
More Yume Nikki Headcanons For Fun~ Shitai-san Edition~
Now I don't know about you, but I'm not even remotely close to the outdoors-y type, so going for a long walk in the woods is usually something I would personally avoid. However, somethings doing the things you hate can turn into some of the most rewarding situations, and who knows, you might just make a new friend along the way? Now, putting aside how cliché that sounds for a minute, imagine, if you will, deciding to go on a random walk in the woods once you get to the dream world, and after encountering a seemingly endless stretch of road, you encounter another person at the end of it? Or rather, what used to be a person...
Indeed, what you have now discovered surrounded by neon traffic cones and the strong scent of pine trees is what appears to be a dead body, and if you're like most people, there are probably a myriad of emotions you'll go through the more you stare at the visage of what once appeared to be a young man, from fear and disgust to morbid curiosity or even pity. However, the longer you stare at the body, the sooner you will realize that there appears to be an effect (a stoplight to be more specific) by its seemingly lifeless form; now upon discovering this, most people would probably just grab the effect and run for the hills but, in the event you decide to stay, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised to find that what you thought to be a corpse is now moving? What the hell?! Why is it moving?! These will probably be the first things you find yourself thinking as you quickly back away from the man that, up until a minute ago, was just lying dead on the ground; however, I promise you that it will be both better for you as well as the man in front of you in the long run if you don't panic!
Rather, if you are frightened or think you might be seeing things, take a deep breath to calm yourself, crouch down so that you are now at eye level with the man, and calmly introduce yourself, letting the man know you mean him no harm. Once you have done this, give the man a minute to speak and be prepared to listen very closely. Upon doing so, you will find that this man, or zombie as he now prefers to be called, is not only someone around his early 20s, but that his name is Shitai and that just as you yourself mean him no harm he in turn feels the same way. In short, while Shitai may like to think of himself as a 'zombie', if he's being honest that's probably not the proper term he should be using as he doesn't crave human flesh nor is he inclined to be violent towards humans; furthermore, aside from his name (which despite the irony of it's meaning he swears up and down was his actual name when he was alive, though maybe it was a nickname?), he has little to no memory of when he was alive aside from vaguely how old he is, his name, and that he was supposed to be guarding the stoplight effect when he met his untimely end (meaning that, unlike yourself, he has always been a resident of the dream world for better or for worse, so you probably shouldn't be concerned with reporting his death).
Now taking all of that information into account, Shitai can't honestly tell you how long he's been guarding the stoplight, let alone how long he's been the way he currently is, but what he CAN tell you is that he appreciates you not loosing your shit after seeing him get up to stretch, that he's quite frankly tired of guarding that stupid stoplight and doesn't care in the slightest if you take it with you on your travels, and that he has enjoyed this time talking to you very, very much :) You know, most people start acting hysterical and/or run away when they see him, and while that has certainly made his job up until now fairly easy to handle, the fact you not only approached him politely and calmly, but also took the time and effort to hear him out almost brings tears to his eyes, and he can't even begin to tell you how grateful he is that you did this for him of all people! However, it's probably late, so if you need to go, he understands lol, so just make sure to take care of that stoplight you got there and have a great journey - is what he had prepared himself to say so that seeing you go wouldn't be nearly as soul - crushingly heartbreaking for him once you decided to leave... After all, the poor guy hasn't had a real conversation with anyone in who knows how long, but at the same time, he needs to man up and let you leave because as far as he's concerned there's no logical reason to keep you here any longer than you need to be since you probably have other places to be.
As such, if you truly want to have to build any kind of friendship with Shitai, whatever you do DON'T just brush him off here and be on your way, because on the off chance you decide to come back down this road, he won't be here no more (after all, without a stoplight to guard anymore, he's freed of his post and can go where ever whenever he wants), and you will probably never see him again unless you have detective level tracking skills (he will avoid you if he sees you because he doesn't want you to think of him as a burden/pity him). Instead, in the event you would like to be friends with him, there are 3 key things you must do: 1. Cut him off before he can finish his farewell speech, and INSIST you will be back here tomorrow to see him again; I know it may seem rude at first, but Shitai won't want to disappoint you if he knows you're already going through the effort to travel back to this area and will choose to stay at least one more day to appease you; 2. The next day you return to talk to him, set up another time to meet up with him again, and DO NOT take no for an answer; again, I know it may seem rude on your part, but Shitai being Shitai will abandon the area if he thinks there's no longer a reason for him to stick around, so by getting him to agree to your meeting up with you, you are giving him an incentive to both continue talking with you and to not think he's slowing you down on your travels; 3. Lastly, after repeating step 2 for at least a month, invite him to travel with you and show him that you are beyond happy once he accepts your offer; if you do not, he will think you offered him your companionship out of pity up until this point, and you will never see him again afterwards.
Once you have earned his trust by going through these 3 steps, well then congratulations! You've not only made friends with a potential zombie, but you've now acquired yourself a new travel companion, and what a companion he truly is~ Because he is technically no longer alive, he doesn't need to eat or sleep, nor is he able to be injured by things that might otherwise harm you yourself; as such, once he begins traveling with you, be prepared to have him carry anything you yourself can't at the moment since he never gets tired or sore (and don't tell him you're fine, because he will not take no for an answer) along with keeping watch for any wild Toriningen that may appear while you 2 set up camp for the night (or rather whenever you decide to stop to rest while in the dream world since you're hopefully/technically already sleeping during the night in the real world). I like to think that Shitai's love languages are acts of service along with words of affirmation, so if he feels like he can help you out in any way shape or form, he will not hesitate to do so if only to repay your kindness for allowing him to travel with you on your journey! In turn, if you want to strengthen your bond of friendship with him, make sure to consistently praise him for helping you as well as let him know just how much you appreciate his companionship while traveling around the bizarre climates of the dream world :)
Unfortunately, Shitai may never be able to recover his former memories from when he was alive and well even if you decide to help him; however, by traveling with you he finds he is no longer as saddened by this as he once was since, with you by his side, he has had the opportunity to see so many new things and make so many wonderful new memories that his past isn't as important anymore. Indeed, back when he used to sit on that lonely stretch of road surrounded by trees all by himself guarding that damn stoplight after his death, all he had to pass the time until your arrival was the bitterness of reflecting on a past that was constantly muddled, a reflection sometimes interrupted by the hysterical screams of passersby while he sat in a pool of his own long ago dried blood, wondering how and why he was even alive to begin with and why he should even care to begin with. However, ever since meeting you, he has finally been able to find a purpose and meaning in his life (afterlife?), and every day he spends with you truly feels like a dream, so much so that you may sometimes need to reaffirm him that you are indeed his friend, that all the adventures the 2 of you have been through together actually happened, and everyday you are thankful to have him as a friend period. Just don't make a big deal if he's starts crying when you do this... You just mean so much to him, you help to keep him grounded and remind him how thankful he is to have met you at all...
As such, given how much you and your friendship mean to him, you should expect him to speak rather fondly of you often whenever you encounter other residents of the dream world. Furthermore, should you have befriended other residents prior to meeting him like Poniko, Masada, Monoko, etc., then be prepared to have Shitai sing your praises whenever you take him to meet your other friends :) I hope you aren't easily embarrassed by this lol, because this man isn't going to be holding anything back, mostly because despite his appearance he's basically a huge goofball, and wants nothing more than to see your face light up upon seeing him get along with your other friends! In addition, after having spent as much time with him as a friend as you have, once you take him to meet your other friends in the dream world, I can very much imagine Shitai adopting the attitude of 'anyone that's a friend of Y/N is a friend of mine :) ' That said, since I headcanon that characters like Poniko and Uboa know how to knit/sew, don't be surprised in the slightest if your birthday rolls around and you receive matching sweaters from Shitai as a present because the man not only went out of his way to learn how to make said sweaters from either Poniko or Uboa, but he also put small albeit unique details on yours alone that only you would notice by being friends with him :3 And then proceeds to reveal that Masada and he were able to get together enough party supplies to throw you a proper party at Poniko's place~ It's little things like this that show you that he not only goes out of his way to get to know your friends better to the point where he can consider them friends of his own, but that he's getting to the point where he's comfortable opening himself up to others outside of you again, and that in and of itself is a wonderful thing!
After all, in the party example, he would probably know about Poniko and Uboa's situation after getting to know them better, so with Masada's help, Shitai would probably arrange the party with Masada at Poniko's since the girl can't leave the pink sea/can't be in the same room at the same time as Uboa, and make it so that the party lasted an equal amount of time with the lights off and on so that both Poniko and Uboa could enjoy the party for equal amounts of time, an effort he thinks he probably would never have made prior to your positive influence on his life! Indeed, without your encouragement, he highly doubts he would have even pictured himself at a party of any kind at all, let alone a party for his best friend...
That said, considering just how much of an impact you've made on Shitai's life, should you want to upgrade your relationship with him from platonic to romantic, you're going to need to be extremely careful in moving forward for 2 main reasons: 1. By this point, there's a huge chance that if you rush things too quickly Shitai will end up closing himself off from others/the world again, and will become largely dependent on you for his social, psychological, physical, and emotional needs with the idea that he doesn't need anyone else so long as you are in his life OR 2. Should you date him and your relationship seems like it's going south at the slightest moment, he will shut himself off from you and everyone else for his own protection, leading you to find him leaving you without a word one day while you aren't paying attention (and once this happens, unless you again have detective level tracking skills, you will probably never see him again). As such to prevent either scenario from happening, once you and him decide to move forward in your relationship, you will both need to sit down and establish proper boundaries and ground rules you know you both will adhere to no matter what. In other words, once Shitai and you decide to take things to the next level (I.E.: From platonic to romantic territory), you and him will need to agree to: communicate and be open/honest with one another no matter what; understand that there are certain boundaries both physical and emotional that shouldn't be crossed in order to prevent either of you from becoming too co-dependent on each other; and lastly, that if either of you has a problem with the other you will discuss it immediately to clear the air as opposed to letting it fester quietly (thereby causing grudges to form and your trust in one another to falter).
Once the 2 of you have sat down and had this important conversation, your relationship, in all honesty, will not blossom overnight but will instead gradually flourish overtime; however, despite how long it takes to form, once it finally does blossom, I promise you that it is more than worth the wait, and that you will not regret taking it so slow in the slightest! Shitai is not only worth the wait, but he is one of the absolute best boyfriends you could ever ask for~ In addition to being, as previously stated, a huge goofball, he is also incredibly kind and sweet, and will treat you like royalty :3 After all, you're an angel in his eyes as far as he's concerned, so treating you like one is just natural lol :) Expect him to give you lots of praise and call you every pet name under the sun; also, don't be surprised if he offers to carry either your luggage or even you yourself whenever you 2 go any where. And especially prepare yourself for him to brag about how much you mean to him whenever he gets the opportunity (don't worry, if you ever want him to tone it down, just let him know and you're good to go from there). On the other hand, should you in turn offer up the same treatment to him, then you may need to convince him he finally hasn't crossed over because he honestly feels like he's finally ascended to heaven and then some~ However, perhaps the best thing about dating Shitai are the revelations that the dream world isn't nearly as hopeless and gloomy as it first appears to be, that things are never what they first appear to be as well as that change can sometimes be a good thing, and that after going through something like a tragedy or a personal problem it can sometimes feel like you're all alone in the world when in reality there is always someone that is there for you somewhere to reach out to (even if you may not know it yet), and that you shouldn't ever give up hope because you're worth it. Before meeting you, Shitai never thought anything would ever come of his life, and it was only with your continued kindness and support to get him to open himself up to the world and other people once more that he realized that his life truly was valuable (even if it may not have seemed like it all the time). Furthermore, Shitai hopes that he has had the same impact on your own life as well, mostly because he can't imagine a world without you in it (dream or otherwise), and wants you to think that he was worth the wait just as he thinks the same of you...
