A REAL QUICK LIST OF SOME OF THE THINGS THEY CHANGED IN THE KAIJI ANIME COMPARED TO THE MANGA FOR CLOVER i probably missed a few but these are the most important to me.
notice the 21 scar on kaiji's arm??? ever think 'hey where did that come from'??? it's actually a brand that they put on him while he was in the loser's room on the espoir- they cut this scene out of the anime for....some reason (too gory/kinky/homoerotic???) i dont have the actual scene from the manga on hand (which is actually kinda amazing in retrospect, that i don't have something from kaiji saved on my computer) but yeah they pinned him down and branded him because they assumed he was teiai property at that point. BUT he escaped as we all saw.
remember how funai said something along the lines of 'some of the men that lose here end up in scientific experiments'? in the original manga funai tells him about the men who are kidnapped ending up in teiai-owned male sex slavery. again. too kinky/homoerotic.
when endou shows up at kaiji's apartment after he is out partying with sahara (who comes back to his apartment with him), endou brought him.........a bouquet of red roses. you know! to celebrate!
speaking of kinky/homoerotic, in the manga hyoudou's chamber where they play ecard is covered in bondage/dungeon paraphernalia- along with the giant portaits of himself of course, there are a lot of chains and handcuffs and torture devices. spoiler alert: when hyoudou was talking about only being able to get off to specific things any more, he wasn't talking about watching young men play card games lmfao
this is the biggest and most unforgiveable change to me- in the first episode of the kaiji s2 anime, kaiji and endou find each other by totally random chance. in the manga, kaiji is homeless and almost completely insane, at which point endou is assigned to track him down and basically bring him back to teiai- but one day, he leaves his office to find every car in the parking lot smashed to fucking hell- but his. in a panic, he gets in his car and leaves the lot (because everyone else parked there assumes he did it), and he finds kaiji hiding in a nearby alleyway. kaiji was the one who smashed the cars- he found endous office, destroyed dozens of cars in the parking lot, and ran away specifically to call him out so he could get him into another gamble. then the scene in the car where endou has him gassed plays out, after endou plays along and acts like he'll help- and now for the grand final smash- endou tells him that its a shame he's just a year or two over the age limit for teiai's infamous male prostitution ring, because he'd be a lot safer there than underground.
