Cabanela stubbornly turns his attention towards the door. “Not quite so.”

Ghost Swap ficlet for @lemchi! Prompt: Alma being Jowd’s muse for his latest masterpiece
Ghost Swap prompt for @jorb-ponderer : Alma-Jowd outfit and/or role-swap… i just think it'd be delightful to see her in the big coat or rocking the jorb look :)
Outfit-swap (yay!) and a role-swapped Alma (oh no!)
Prompt A12 "Cast member(s) of your choice as a DnD class, art" for the Ghost Swap event.
I wanted to draw 3 more characters for this but decided to just stick with the main three character designs, with a different kind of twist to it.
(More quick lore for this DnD AU below!)
An AU where the wandering Phantom is actually a Lich's experimented familiar which turned into a Revenant Being that doesn't remember who or what he is other than the body he woke up with, and a phylactery in his chest that grows in power with each moment that passes.
Sometimes the Revenant dreams about a man and woman staring down at him, awaiting for himself to give in to them so they can finally rise together from the immaterial plane
He has been traveling with Lynne and her little wolf Missile and fends off against mercenaries when needed, looking for any memories of himself.
Yet when he rests his eyes shut he fears he may never wake up again, knowing that whatever or whoever is watching him will take his body over and use him as a vessel, eradicating him from his own journey.
i know this prompt has been (at least?) twice already, but i felt compelled to do My Take on it, cuz Every Cat i've known has taken a while to get used to The Vest lol
prompt was @the-grey-hunt 's "sissel in a service cat vest" for @fyeahghosttrick 's ghost swap!
Another fill for @fyeahghosttrick's Ghost Swap, this time for anonymous prompt A9: "Jowd/Cabanela, who fell first and who fell harder?"

Cabanela falls in love with grace. Jowd’s not a hard man to love, even if he is tragically non-single. It happens in pieces. Like the frog boiling in the water. By the time he realized it, he couldn’t pin it to a single moment.
Now, most people wouldn’t think of him as the type to suffer in silence. No, if anyone had to assign that between the two of them, they’d assign that place to Jowd. But Jowd knows what he wants and knows when to take it. And he’s already made his choices, even before Cabanela waltzed into his life. If there’s one man that knows commitment, it’s him.
Well, Cabanela has his own commitments, too. He’s not one to shirk those.
Love continues to boil him, until the heat of the water just feels like a normal old hot tub. It’s not so bad. Their friendship isn’t constantly attacking him. It just languishes. Most of it’s work, but some of it’s getting drinks afterwards, or the faint few times he’s met Jowd’s wife.
Alma’s a good woman. Cabanela doesn’t want to hate her for having what he can’t. Even if she wasn’t in the picture — well, Jowd’s a more traditional man. There’s no guarantee that Jowd wouldn’t have found love with some other woman. It’s no reason for resentment, so he doesn’t.
Kamila’s born not long after. They let Cabanela hold her, so he does, and for a moment he tries to imagine what it might be like to be a true part of this family.
He can’t let himself get lost in that fantasy, though. He’s never been a domestic man. At this point, he’s probably destined to be an eternal bachelor. It’s a thought he’s had multiple times. It doesn’t feel quite so damning, though. Because quitting the bachelor life would mean loving someone else, and he doesn’t see himself getting out of this anytime soon.
-
He has to be a better man.
It doesn’t have to be a choice, between his record and Jowd. It won’t be a choice, if he has anything to say about it. That’s why he makes the arrest. And that’s why he keeps his eyes open for more cases that could go with this one. And there are more, once he waits. Enough to establish a separate team, a separate facility, a separate investigation.
His coat can stay white. He hasn’t done anything else wrong.
The countdown to Jowd’s execution is on.
Cabanela is going to make sure that it doesn’t happen, no matter what he has to do to get there. Of course, ideally, all of it’s above-board. But, well, there’s some more underhanded tactics he’s got, too.
This won’t be the end. Cabanela has all the pieces lined up to make sure of that.
Maybe, by the end of all this, he’ll get the boy, too. It’s entwined with everything else, what he’s doing all this for. He can’t forget about it. That slow boil, always warm in the back of his mind.
It hits Jowd like a bullet to the chest.
Maybe that’s a bad joke. He’s run out of good ones, though. ‘Sissel’ didn’t seem to like his gallows humor. Though Jowd’s not exactly staring down the gallows anymore.
Instead, his former partner tosses him a watch. It glints in the moonlight before it lands in his hand.
“If there’s nothing else like it, don’t throw it,” he says, and he realizes in that same moment — he’s in love with this impossible man. Who throws his presents. Whose present, all along, has been this. The SIU. The jail. Whatever is happening tonight. He doubts Cabanela would know about the ghost of a man that was meant to be long dead, but…well, what does Jowd know, at this point? His world’s been inverted by the realization.
Still, it doesn’t change the facts of their situation.
Cabanela doesn’t let him go, though he lets ‘Sissel’ go through Jowd’s call to Lynne. He doesn’t take Jowd back to the prison, though.
Just a few minutes ago, he’d thought of death as an inevitability for him. It was what he deserved for everything. It was something they deserved in tandem, their sins piled high enough to touch the heavens.
Death is looking less and less likely, though, as Cabanela leads him away from the prison. He’s not even in handcuffs. It’s like Cabanela knows that Jowd will follow where he leads. Has it really been this, for them, all this time? He’d loved Alma. He’d been consumed by it.
This is consuming, too. His existence has been condensed down to this very point, to the moon shining above them on this winter night, the cold and the silence, the beacon of Cabanela’s white coat.
He knows what that coat means to Cabanela. It’s not an easy thing to keep clean. Jowd almost wishes he could find a way to rub some paint off on it. He knows Cabanela hasn’t been a perfect man. The right thing to do would be to march him right back to the prison, and hope that they’d managed to fix the electric chair, or have him executed by firing squad.
Hell, Cabanela could’ve put the bullet in Jowd’s head himself, and his last words probably would’ve been “thank you”. The awareness of his feelings is warping the last five years around it. It couldn’t have sprouted up before then, even if he thinks it might’ve grown between the cracks of his grief.
-
Cabanela’s left. Sissel is gone. Lynne is talking to the Justice Minister. And Jowd finally looks at the present, for real.
He’d thought it was a stopwatch. It was actually a tracker. He tries to remember the layout of this town. It’s been a while since he had to think about it. The location of the device is at the junkyard, he thinks.
He snaps the present closed.
Cabanela always knows the next step, doesn’t he? Jowd wonders what’s next after tonight. If he’ll get Jowd’s conviction overturned. His execution will probably get stayed while the investigation is reopened.
And then what will happen after that?
It’s the longest night of the year. But sooner or later, the sun’s gonna rise. In the light of day, can whatever’s lingering between them survive?
for @alto-tenure 's prompt! "sports au. any sport but track & field is my preference. coaches jowd & cabanela…very enthusiastic but not as talented lynne…"
I saw "sports" and immediately my mind went to "swords" ...that is, HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). Jowd and Cabanela bear the leg garter of high-ranking members of the guild...and they are taking Lynne's beginner, inept enthusiasm with different amounts of grace
So apparently "as a flamingo, the pinker you are, the healthier and better quality you are" and exhaustion turns them white. Therefore: new timeline Cabs. For @sunnyaliceart's prompt "Cabanela wearing a pink coat like a flamingo or any other color of the rainbow" as part of @fyeahghosttrick's Ghost Swap!

Ghost Swap! Prompt for @azurefishnets with a free square for FFVI AU. I could have sworn you prompted it too, @laughingmango, but we’ll just say it’s a year late! Or something. Little AU time anyway baby.
gosh tumblr just eats up those pixels huh. click for better quality ofc
this was the first prompt i drew, and for some reason i decided to draw three characters at once, which i really should've thought better of lol. i'm happy with how it turned out, but i tend to lose steam fast on multi character projects
the idea is that they're going shopping at the mall, but gun to my head you cannot make me draw a background 😊. Memry is only seen in game in a chicken kitchen uniform, so it was fun coming up with an outfit she would usually wear. and, yes, rindge is carrying the girl's bags
this post is part of @fyeahghosttrick 's annual ghost swap! prompts for anonymous and @the-grey-hunt
This is my first time participating ghost swap, despite me being not hyperfixated on gric at the moment and have a hard time getting myself to start drawing grick, i have fun! I hope y'all like em ^^
@sunnyaliceart jowd being great at ice skating, but
cabanela surprisingly is terrible at it
fun fact, my thesis animated film is about is about ice skating, so it just makes sense for me to pick this lol
the rest of the prompt i choose feels like going to spoilers territory and i know most of my following haven't ghost trick yet sooo
VV GHOST TRICK SPOILERS AHEAD VV
@frogpotat yomiel aura farming
@pennamepersona sissel learning how to read post game
@the-grey-hunt lynee on the run with sissel
@allpatchedart sissel/yomiel working at a cat cafe
@diathadevil sissel and lynee arguing
gotta yap a bit bout this one- i originally want to make a comic about it, but omg it was not a great time for me to be not hyperfixated on ghosts, so i thought i'll skip it, but even after i finish the other prompts, this one sTILL LINGERS ON MY MIND CUZ I ALSO HAVE A SIMILAR IDEA MONTHS AGO IN MESSY DOODLES- so i settled with drawing a single image, and that satisfy me, end of yap session
