Love the artwork of Eiko and Hayato you did for New Years! Out of curiosity if the two actually went to a Shogatsu festival what would be their first stops be games and food wise? (Also fairly new follower and I already love the story, I was already a fan of the paranormal so this story got me hooked!)
First- THANK YOU SO MUCH!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I'm really glad you liked the art, and the story as well it means a lot 😭❤️
As for the question, I looked into it and while I wanted to draw them playing some traditional festival games I've taken too long to reply to this, so I thought I'd just draw something cute with them eating some festival foods. Honestly it was prolly just a skill issue but I couldn't figure out if the regular festival foods like taiyaki and dango are also eaten during a Shogatsu festival, I thought about drawing them eating osechi-ryori but it looked so absurdly detailed to draw and I didn't want to put this off until Easter I'm so sorry 😭
Having said that I think Hayato would loooove taiyaki simply because I call him an evil cat and it's a treat shaped like a fish. As for the games, I can tell you for sure Hayato is not even going to go near the goldfish fishing one LMAO but I can see Eiko trying it out and being pretty good. I like the idea of them flying kites together too, probably with Sanako. I also thought it'd be fun to draw them partaking in the hatsuhinode tradition, witnessing the first sunrise of the new year, which is what the middle panel is
I also had the urge to draw them making mochi, especially because of the japanese Moon Rabbit myth about a rabbit on the Moon making mochi, I associate Eiko with rabbits, the stars aligned it was perfect- I couldn't leave out Hayato so let's pretend for a second the "Moon Fox" is also a thing
Bebis eating their mochi :)
Once again thank you so much for the ask, this is probably the most fun I've had replying to one in a bit! It was a bit of a challenge (mostly self-imposed bc I wanted to draw a lot of stuff) and I'm sorry again for how absurdly long I took, but I hope you, whoever you are kind anon, enjoy :]
Auspicious taka (hawk) and matsu (pine) embroidered obi, perfect for coming New Year season.
I also love the antique purple kimono with bold tsubotare (pot glaze)!
Miku March 11: New Year
Our local chapter of the Japan Society held an event at a market for Shogatsu. They had mochi pounding (back in the beginning of January), and the ticket to get Ozoni soup was a hanafuda card which I thought was fun.
The soup was delicious :D, they also had hot matcha lemonade. I also met some nice folks that I chatted about Japan and Japanese culture with for a bit which was fun. I don't do a lot of social activities so meeting other people is always a treat.
Finally the main event they were doing was holding a craft session to make Nengajō 年賀状, which are the traditional cards that get sent out to wish blessings and good health to folks in the new year. I decided that since one of the iconic traditions is the First Sunrise of the Year (Hatsuhinode 初日の出), and many folks hike Mt. Fuji to see it from the top, that picking that ad my subject was a good choice. I added a torii and komainu silhouettes. On the right is a tag that reads Kinga Shin'nen 謹賀新年, which is a common yojijukugo that means Happy New Year. Around it you'll also seethe common new year motifs of plum blossoms, pine, and bamboo.
Anyways hope you enjoy this little blurb.
