So I’m sure all of you remember a couple years ago we had 12/12/12. It was the last date where all 3 days were the same number for about 90 years. Big cool deal right? Here’s the issue...I forgot to make a wish at 11:11. It was 60 seconds when I happened to be paying attention in class and didn’t notice. So my friends all laughed and said I missed out on that amazing opportunity of a day...
However, 3 hours later, the cast list came out for my senior musical Phantom of the Opera. I had gotten Madame Giry, which was the part I really wanted (because, you know, she’s awesome and a bit of a badass). I figured, hey, cool twist. 12/12/12 gave me something I wanted.
THEN I got home, and a couple hours later my dad wandered in with the mail, where there happened to be a rather big envelope from Washington College addressed to me. Yep, I got my acceptance letter to Washington College on 12/12/12. That’s pretty cool right? So I never needed to make a wish when the second 11:11 of the day rolled around, because I had got the things I wanted, without any wishing required.
So there I was yesterday, three years after I got the envelope that changed my life (it’s not cheesy, it’s true!) and I had an incredible day. I hung out with friends, had some classes (yeah we had Saturday classes cause of our long break) that were actually awesome, talked to some professors about potential future internships and jobs and such, and then came home, got dressed up with friends, and had a lovely holiday party.
I am a completely different person than I was three years ago. I have become more open to life and people around me, I laugh a lot more, and frankly, that’s because I take a lot more risks. Not crazy jumping-off-a-cliff risks (though I have done that before) but risks in day to day life. I learned to push my self to be open to every little opportunity because I have felt safe and loved enough at WAC to build up that courage.
So thank you WAC, for changing me. Three years since I got a letter in the mail, and now three semesters left until someone hands me a paper as I walk across a graduation stage. Time flies.
