Motion Graphic intro to Catch me if You Can from Unverted G on Vimeo.
Catch Me If You Can, produced by Nexus Productions (creative directors: Olivier Kuntzel and Florence Deygas.)
This sequence really moves me. The use of typography is very dynamic throughout the piece. The ascenders and descenders of the different type become part of the landscape and are often used as a grid. The words appear and disappear based on those lines, as if it was following a path traced by them. This sequence tells the story of a character who is on the run. The different types are sometimes helping him to hide, to change his disguise or simply to escape faster. In that sense, typography really supports the narrative of this piece.
I also appreciate this piece because it proposes a balanced mix of analog within a digital production. All the characters were made with rubber stamps, which are inducing a kind of materiality into the final digital product. Lastly, as we already discussed in class, this sequence is a kind of homage to the work of Saul Bass, which gives it a nice aura.
The idea for this sequence came from a reflexion on words and what they really mean. I came to the conclusion that words alone don't give the full meaning. That goes for spoken and written language, and can also partially explain why language is so rich. However, miscommunication can also happen when something is quoted outside of context.
Even though words have a range of meaning, the amount of definitions connected to one word can be easily go from 1 to 75. In the sequence that I realised, I decided to show some of the different meanings of "word" and "words". This video plays on the notions of emptiness and fullness.
Last week when the work of Jenny Holzer was introduced to us in class, I noticed that her Truisms have some connections with what I have been doing here. In fact, the statement that I am using to open my video seems to content the same kind of paradox that Holzer is using her work.
