We've all been there, we've all seen it... That moment when you're in class or watching a movie at the cinema and there is one annoying person who stands up, walks around and gets in the way, they cast a shadow on the screen and ruin the image temporarily! Sit down stranger! You're ruining the moment - And its over, you missed it, and so did everyone else. Annoying right?
There is a way around this in smaller venues anyway. If you are presenting or watching something at home, or school you can get a short throw projector. You see them in schools now a days linked up to the interactive whiteboards (At long last!) with good reason. You can white on the board without casting a shadow onto the screen and having your projection on your face. I do have to note that short throw projectors use fish eye lenses or mirrors to get so close, so they are often restricted on size, but if you've got a room of 30 people, that won't be an issue. Its also great if you are restricted on space, or want to keep it all in one part of your room - OR mobile use!
There is one thing I must add, which I've mentioned in my other blog posts: Projector screens. I know having a mobile screen is really useful but with a short throw its best to have a flat surface to project onto. You can use a white wall or a expensive fast fold screen if possible for mobile use, or look for a fixed frame, a tab tensioned screen or a white board to project onto. The reason being is that a short throw, as the name suggests sits so closely to the screen that it will show up any imperfection on that screen, and having a non flat surface won't look great if you're trying to impress your audience. Some people don't mind, but I still have to tell you about it.
Short throw for home cinema? Why yes, there are a few Full HD projectors out there. The Gadget show did a review on the BenQ W1080ST late last year which made it very popular for a while. A few more have since emerged such as the Infocus IN118HDSTA and a Vivitek D7180HD (and more) to start filling the void in the market where Full HD Short throws once sat.
To round it off, Short throw projectors are a great way to rid of those annoying people who like to stand up a lot and walk around in front of your image, they are fantastic when you haven't got much space and brilliant when you want to take it around with you to different venues. They are great!
